The provider makes and ships products after customers buy them, so you can avoid stocking finished inventory—but you still have to create listings, attract buyers, and handle customer service.
How print-on-demand works
You create or commission artwork, apply it to products in a provider’s catalog, and list those products through a marketplace or your own online store. Where the sales channel integrates with the provider, orders can be sent for fulfillment: the provider produces, packs, and ships the item after a customer places an order. Shopify describes this as a way to test products without buying and storing inventory first (Shopify’s 2026 print-on-demand guide).

Avoiding inventory does not eliminate business costs or responsibilities. Per-item costs can be higher than bulk purchasing, shipping is less directly under your control, and the provider’s options can limit customization. You remain responsible for choosing products, setting prices, writing accurate listings, bringing in customers, and giving buyers a reliable service experience.

Pick an audience and a need
Define who you want to serve and what would make a product relevant to them. A clear audience helps narrow the design and product choices; it is not proof that the audience will buy. Do not treat a niche as profitable until your own sales data supports that conclusion.

Start with one or two product types
Choose items that fit the audience and the artwork rather than trying to fill a large catalog. Shopify lists T-shirts, mugs, posters, books, accessories, and home décor among common print-on-demand categories. T-shirts are one possible starting product, but category popularity alone does not establish demand for a particular design or shop.

Create original artwork
Make or commission art that reproduces clearly on the selected item and in the provider’s available print area. Do not use protected characters, logos, artwork, or slogans unless you have permission to do so.

Compare fulfillment providers for your actual order
Compare the exact product and print method, production and shipping charges, delivery estimates for your target destinations, provider locations, available integrations, branding options, and how defects or lost shipments are resolved. A provider’s broad catalog does not mean every item is available in every location or has the same delivery time. Shopify names Printful, Printify, and Gelato as examples and recommends considering product selection, shipping speed, and pricing; those mentions are examples, not an independent ranking.

Choose where to sell
A marketplace may put listings in front of existing shoppers, but you compete with other sellers and pay applicable marketplace fees. A standalone store offers more control over branding and customer experience, but requires more setup and your own traffic-generation plan. Compare audience access, total costs, setup and maintenance, control, and how you will reach buyers before choosing.

Printful’s channel comparison also frames the choice around factors such as marketplace reach and the control and marketing work involved in running a standalone store (Printful’s channel guide). The right option depends on your audience and capacity; the available evidence does not establish one platform as best for everyone.

Build listings and confirm the order flow
Write descriptions that accurately represent the item, display images that make the product and design clear, and set a price that accounts for your costs. Connect the sales channel to the provider if an integration is available, then confirm how an order reaches fulfillment. Establish how you will answer customer questions and handle returns or other problems instead of assuming the provider will manage every customer issue.

Calculate what remains from each sale
For each product and destination, subtract provider production and shipping charges, selling-channel and payment costs, advertising, and expected service costs from the sale price. Use current figures for the precise product, destination, and channel: catalog prices, shipping, and storefront costs vary. Shopify notes that profitability depends on sale price, provider fees, and order volume; a sale is not the same as profit.

Promote, observe, and adjust
Choose a traffic plan that fits your channel and audience. Shopify suggests social-media polls and question stickers as ways to gather feedback. They can help you learn what people respond to, but they do not guarantee sales. Use actual customer responses and orders to decide whether to revise a design, product, price, or marketing approach.

This is a decision framework, not a claim that either route is always cheaper or more effective. Compare the current terms of the specific channel you are considering with the work you can realistically do to reach customers.
Budget for more than the provider’s base price
Printify’s 2026 guide estimates that many beginners using a standalone store spend around $30–$100 a month. That is a vendor-published, setup-dependent estimate—not a universal price or a complete startup budget. It may not capture a seller’s advertising, design, legal, tax, product-sampling, or transaction expenses. Check current prices for your chosen storefront, products, and services before relying on any estimate (Printify’s 2026 startup guide).
Shopify’s guide, published June 26, 2026, reports a global print-on-demand market value of $13.1 billion in 2026 and projects 23.6% annual growth through 2033. The guide does not identify the underlying market-research publisher, so treat those as figures reported by Shopify rather than independently validated measurements. A market estimate describes an industry; it does not predict the sales or profit of an individual new shop (Shopify’s guide).

Check legal, tax, and customer obligations where you operate
Business registration, income tax, sales tax or VAT, consumer-protection rules, intellectual-property rights, and product-label requirements depend on where you operate and sell. For U.S. sales tax, Printify’s help page says a seller using a standalone store who determines they have nexus in a state must register for a permit there. It also says specified marketplace channels act as facilitators in most states and collect and remit tax. This is general provider guidance, not an individual tax determination; confirm current requirements with the relevant tax authority or a qualified adviser (Printify’s sales-tax guidance).
Can you start print-on-demand for free?
You may be able to list products without paying the provider for production until an order is placed, depending on the provider and channel’s current terms. That does not make the business cost-free: storefront or marketplace charges, transaction costs, marketing, design work, samples, and other operating expenses may still apply. Check current provider and sales-channel prices and identify which charges are due before a sale and which follow an order.
