There is no universal minimum: the right target depends on your platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, and how stable your connection is.
Start with the stream bitrate, then leave headroom
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. Compare it with your measured upload speed, in the same units: Mbps means megabits per second. A fast download result does not show whether your connection can sustain an outgoing stream.

Two practical rules of thumb illustrate how to add headroom. Twitch Help advises upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%; its example says a 6 Mbps stream may require at least 8 Mbps upload. OBS Project suggests starting with a stream bitrate set to 75% of total upload speed. These are guidance, not guarantees: other devices, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, and the route to the streaming server can still cause interruptions. Twitch Help · OBS Project

Quick calculation
- Using Twitch’s 30% guidance, multiply your configured bitrate by 1.3. A 6 Mbps stream gives 7.8 Mbps, rounded to at least 8 Mbps upload in Twitch’s example.
- Using OBS’s 75% starting point, divide your configured bitrate by 0.75. A 6 Mbps stream corresponds to about 8 Mbps total upload.
The similar results for a 6 Mbps stream do not mean either formula guarantees stability. Twitch’s figure is Twitch guidance; OBS’s is a general starting point. For a YouTube stream, use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your output settings, then leave headroom rather than treating that encoder bitrate as your internet-plan minimum.

YouTube recommended streaming bitrates
YouTube’s currently published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. They describe the encoder’s outgoing video bitrate—not a guaranteed minimum upload speed for your plan. The YouTube page does not display a publication date, and recommendations may change. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| Output | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Example: 1080p60 on YouTube
For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube recommends a 17 Mbps encoder bitrate. Your sustained upload should be higher than 17 Mbps, with room for network variation and other upload use. As an illustration—not a YouTube requirement—applying OBS’s 75% heuristic gives about 22.7 Mbps total upload (17 ÷ 0.75). Choose a lower bitrate or output setting if your connection cannot hold the target reliably.

How to check whether your connection is ready
- Check your upload speed under realistic conditions. Test when your home or workplace network is being used as it will be during the stream. A single peak speed-test result is not proof that the connection can sustain that rate to the platform’s ingest server.
- Set the stream bitrate for your platform and output. For YouTube, use the codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendations above as an encoder-setting reference; for Twitch, account for Twitch Help’s stated upload headroom guidance.
- Run a test stream if the platform allows it. YouTube recommends a preflight test using audio and movement similar to the real event, then checking stream health messages. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains its recommendations.
- Watch for dropped frames or health warnings. If they occur, troubleshoot the connection and bitrate before assuming that a faster internet plan is necessary.
What to do if the stream drops frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends starting by lowering the video bitrate; it also suggests trying another server and checking whether a VPN or network-optimization software is interfering. Dynamic bitrate can be a fallback, but may reduce video quality and does not fix the underlying cause. OBS Project stream connection troubleshooting
Work through likely causes
- Bitrate is too high for sustained upload: Reduce the encoder bitrate, or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Wi-Fi is inconsistent: OBS recommends using a wired connection for streaming. Test Ethernet before buying new equipment.
- Network equipment or cabling may be faulty: Check the modem, router, Ethernet cable, network card, and other devices along the connection. Replace hardware only when troubleshooting points to a fault; a new cable cannot increase the upload capacity of an internet plan.
- VPN or network software is affecting the connection: Test with suspected VPN or network-optimization software disabled, if safe and appropriate for your network.
- The problem persists across tests: Contact your ISP. Congestion, routing, or ISP-side changes may be involved, and a speed test alone may not isolate the cause.
OBS’s connection guide is dated September 30, 2024. Its advice is to diagnose the connection and bitrate systematically rather than jumping straight to a router purchase or faster plan. Read the OBS troubleshooting guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 Mbps upload enough for live streaming?
It depends on the stream bitrate and how consistently the connection can sustain 10 Mbps. For example, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p60; leave additional headroom and test under representative conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes download speed matter for streaming?
The broadcaster’s outgoing stream depends primarily on upload capacity. Download speed alone does not establish whether you can sustain the configured bitrate.

Will a speed test prove my stream is stable?
No. A speed test is useful, but a representative test stream and platform stream-health indicators give a better check of the actual streaming path.
