Each sees a different part of the delivery path, so a green status page does not prove that your individual stream is healthy.
Set up monitoring before you go live
- Open the platform’s stream-health view. For YouTube, open Live Control Room and check stream health, error messages, and real-time analytics. Available metrics vary depending on whether you are streaming from a phone or an encoder.
- Keep the encoder’s status visible. If you use OBS, watch its dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming. A counter that keeps rising or a yellow or red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering.
- Know where the platform reports wider incidents. For Twitch, keep Twitch Status available to check service components such as video broadcasting and video watching. Check it when symptoms suggest a broader incident, but return to your stream-specific diagnostics to investigate your broadcast.
Read the stream-health signals
YouTube Live Control Room errors
YouTube displays errors alongside its stream-health indicator. Its help documentation describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate; unresolved errors may appear again. Note the displayed message and timestamp, then follow the platform’s specific remediation text rather than treating the color alone as a diagnosis. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance.

OBS dropped frames and connection status
Rising dropped frames in OBS are a connection or bitrate-capacity symptom, not a general measure of whether the platform is available. Check whether the connection indicator changes at the same time and compare those observations with the platform’s received-stream health. Twitch Inspector stream diagnostics
Twitch Inspector provides stream-health graphs, stream specifications, and a configuration check. Use it to investigate broadcaster-side encoder or internet-connection problems; use Twitch Status separately for a possible service-wide issue.

Find where the fault is occurring
Use the location of the symptom to choose what to inspect next. The encoder, the platform’s ingest diagnostics, the viewer’s playback, and a platform status page observe different points in delivery and can disagree.

For YouTube, the Live Streaming API documentation describes machine-readable stream state and health, including configuration issues. Its issue examples include codec, bitrate, and primary/backup stream mismatches. Use the platform’s own issue fields and remediation details: an API status is structured evidence to interpret, not a substitute for diagnosis.

Use a repeatable incident check
- Record the time and exact message. Capture the platform’s error text, severity, and timestamp so you can compare it with encoder changes and reports from viewers.
- Compare the three views. Check the individual stream’s platform health, encoder counters and connection state, and service-wide status when relevant.
- Follow the signal to the next diagnostic point. If OBS shows rising dropped frames, investigate the connection and sustainable bitrate. If platform health reports a configuration issue, use that platform’s specified checks. If a service-status component is affected, account for that broader incident while continuing to inspect your own stream.
- Recheck after making a change. Confirm whether the same error recurs and whether the relevant counter or health indicator changes. A single healthy signal does not rule out a problem at another point in delivery.
