You can loop an old video into a YouTube livestream with OBS: add the saved file as a Media Source, enable Loop if you want it to repeat, then send OBS’s output to a stream you created in YouTube Studio. This keeps the video playing while the encoder is running; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. You need live-streaming access and the necessary rights to everything in the video and audio.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 for livestreaming. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can remain on and connected to the internet for the duration of the stream.
- A video file you can legally broadcast live. Having an old copy of a video does not itself give you the right to rebroadcast it.
- A reliable local copy if you need to retain a recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup.
How to loop an old video with OBS and YouTube Live
-
Add the video in OBS
Open OBS and add a Media Source in the Sources panel. Choose the local video file. OBS supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Turn on Loop if the video should restart when playback reaches the end; leave it off if you want playback to stop there. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Create the livestream in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. In its stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the credentials as required by the selected connection method. You can also use the server URL and key in the encoder’s custom-server fields. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room workflow. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it, or include it in a public post.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check the picture and sound before going public
Start streaming from OBS so YouTube receives the encoder feed. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then check that the correct video and audio are present. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; do a short test before relying on a long or unattended broadcast. Start the event in Live Control Room when you are ready to make it live, following the event’s settings.

Plan how the broadcast ends and what you need to save
Stop the encoder feed when you want the broadcast to end, and check the Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if you use them. Do not treat YouTube’s replay as your only archive: its automatic archiving may not capture streams over 12 hours. Make a local recording or other backup if you need a dependable copy.
Rights, Content ID, and monetization
Old footage still has to be cleared for live use
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for the live content. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream. Its copyright guidance notes that even licensed content can cause a Content ID interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Confirm live-streaming rights for all video, music, artwork, and other material before broadcasting.

Repetition does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization rules distinguish reused content from inauthentic content. The policy page notes that, on July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible; reused-content review remains separate, and copyright rules still apply. A loop is not automatically disallowed or automatically eligible: the outcome depends on the material and the channel. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Eligible channels may use live-stream ad formats, Super Chat and Super Stickers, or memberships subject to YouTube’s requirements and settings. YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve ads. Review its live-stream monetization guidance rather than assuming a loop will earn revenue.

Local OBS or a cloud service?
| Option | What keeps the video running | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on your computer | Your computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available to send the feed. | You control the local playback setup and can keep a local archive, but the official OBS and YouTube instructions do not guarantee unattended uptime or automatic recovery after an interruption. |
| StreamNeo | StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, so your computer does not have to stay on. | One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a free first day with no card. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video playing, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. A slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. India-based customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is actively streaming, the stream URL and key match the current event, and the key was not rotated or copied with extra characters. Recheck the Live Control Room stream settings and encoder status.
- The preview has video but no sound: Check that the media file has an audio track, that OBS is capturing it, and that the OBS audio meters move during playback. Confirm the audio is not muted in OBS or the source.
- The video stops at the end: Enable Loop in the Media Source properties if the file should repeat. This restarts the source; it does not itself ensure the YouTube connection stays live.
- The broadcast is interrupted by a copyright match: Stop and review the match. Verify that you have live-stream rights for the matched material and, if licensed, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The stream goes offline when you leave: A local OBS setup depends on the computer, encoder, and connection continuing to operate. For unattended continuity, test the whole setup first or use a cloud service designed to keep uploaded videos looping.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or backup when a complete archive matters.
