Don’t test or charge it while it’s wet. Wipe away visible liquid and let it air-dry, powered off. Rice and hair dryers are not safe shortcuts. If it was submerged, exposed to sugary or dirty liquid, or is still acting strangely after drying, get model-specific support or have it assessed by an electronics repair professional.
What to do immediately
- Disconnect power. Unplug a wired controller from the console or charger. If it is on, switch it off. Nintendo warns that using a wet electrical accessory can pose an electric-shock risk: Nintendo Support’s Wii U Pro Controller guidance.
- Remove batteries only if safe. If the controller has user-removable batteries, take them out only if you can do so without handling a hot, swollen, smoking, bubbling, or melting device or battery. Those signs can indicate a battery hazard; see iFixit’s wet-electronics guidance.
- Don’t check whether it still works. Keep it off and don’t reconnect or charge it to test it. Impurities in liquid can create unintended conductive paths and contribute to corrosion, according to iFixit.
- Wipe the outside. Blot visible liquid with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid pressing buttons repeatedly, which could move liquid farther into the controller.
How to dry a wet controller
Leave the controller switched off in a dry place and let it air-dry. The safe waiting time depends on the model and how much liquid entered. Nintendo tells Wii U Pro Controller owners to let that controller dry “for a few days”; Amazon’s Luna controller guidance says to wait until it is completely dry before replacing batteries or reconnecting cables. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal drying guarantee.
Do not use a blow-dryer or another heat source to speed things up. Nintendo specifically warns that heat may damage the Wii U Pro Controller. Don’t put the controller in rice, either: iFixit says rice and similar desiccants do not remove spill contaminants and may cause further damage.
When drying may not be enough
Air-drying can remove moisture, but it cannot establish that internal residue or corrosion is gone. The liquid’s composition and the extent of exposure matter: sugary, salty, acidic, alkaline, or dirty liquid can leave contaminants behind. iFixit says disassembly and cleaning are the best way to prevent corrosion after internal exposure, particularly with acidic or alkaline liquids. If you aren’t experienced with electronics repair, don’t guess at a cleaning method; use a model-specific repair guide or contact a qualified repair service.

- It was submerged or a large amount got inside: Ask the manufacturer or an experienced electronics repair service for model-specific advice.
- Liquid reached the battery, or the battery/device shows warning signs: Don’t handle a hot, swollen, smoking, bubbling, or melting battery. Nintendo directs Wii U Pro Controller owners to contact support if liquid touched that controller’s battery; other models may have different procedures.
- It still fails, behaves erratically, or won’t connect after drying: Stop using it and seek manufacturer support or professional assessment rather than repeatedly powering it on.
- It was only a small splash of clean water: Keep it off and allow it to dry fully before reconnecting. That lowers the immediate risk of powering a wet device, but does not guarantee there is no internal damage.
Should you open it yourself?
Opening a controller can make it possible to clean internal liquid and residue, but it also carries a risk of damaging small parts or the battery. Consider the controller model, the type and amount of liquid, whether the battery was exposed, your comfort with disassembly, and repair cost compared with replacement. If you choose DIY repair, use a guide for the exact model rather than relying on a generic teardown. The available guidance does not establish a universal best repair route or a survival rate for wet controllers.
Model-specific guidance matters
Instructions differ by controller. For example, Nintendo’s advice to dry a Wii U Pro Controller for a few days and contact support if it does not work afterward applies to that model. Amazon’s Luna guidance says to remove batteries and unplug cables when wet, then wait until the controller is completely dry before reconnecting or reinstalling batteries. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your controller before attempting repair or resuming use.
