Age alone cannot tell you whether an individual pair is worn out: the AirPods family spans several generations, and Apple does not publish a universal lifespan or multi-year battery-runtime benchmark for every model. Identify your exact generation, assess how the pair performs in your routine, and check current local service options before deciding whether to keep, service, or replace it.
What does “older AirPods” mean?
It can refer to products with different designs, features, cases, and accessory compatibility. Apple’s AirPods identification guide explains how to find a model number in Settings or on the product and match it to a generation. Its listed introductions range from first-generation AirPods in 2016 to AirPods Pro 3 in 2025, with AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro (1st generation) in 2019, AirPods 3 in 2021, AirPods Pro 2 variants in 2022 and 2023, and AirPods 4 in 2024.

Check the model before buying a replacement earbud, charging case, or other model-specific accessory. Compatibility is not universal: Apple says, for example, that the AirPods 4 case is not compatible with AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation earbuds or with other AirPods earbuds.

There is no official benchmark in these Apple support sources for typical AirPods battery capacity or usable runtime after a specified number of years or charging cycles. Instead, judge the pair against your own needs. Notice whether it reliably lasts through the listening period you usually need, and whether the connection, audio, microphone, controls, fit, and charging case work as expected. These are practical observations, not results from a standardized test.

- Runtime: Does a charge cover your normal use, or do you regularly need to stop and recharge?
- Reliability: Do the earbuds connect consistently, and do their audio, microphone, controls, and case charging function well enough for you?
- Fit and features: Are they comfortable, and do they still meet your needs?
- Condition: Is there a physical or charging problem that could be addressed through troubleshooting or service?
A short listening session can help you observe how your own pair behaves, but it is not a controlled measurement of battery health. Do not assume that one symptom proves the battery is the cause; use Apple’s AirPods troubleshooting and service route for faults that persist.
Can charging habits or temperature help?
Optimised Battery Charging
Apple says Optimised Battery Charging is designed to reduce battery wear by limiting how long eligible AirPods spend fully charged. Its current support guidance lists AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 or later, used with a compatible iPhone or iPad and iOS or iPadOS 15 or later. For eligible models, the feature learns charging routines and delays charging to 100% until shortly before you are likely to use the AirPods. It is a preventive feature, not a way to restore capacity an older battery has already lost. Check Apple’s Optimised Battery Charging guidance for current requirements.

Heat and cold
Apple specifies an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) and a storage range of -10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F). Use in very cold conditions outside the operating range may temporarily reduce battery life or cause the AirPods to shut down; very hot use can permanently shorten battery life. Avoid leaving them in a parked car or in direct sunlight. See Apple’s operating-temperature guidance.

Compare the options using what your pair actually does and what you need next. A working pair that covers your usual listening time may still be useful even if it is an older generation. If a fault gets in the way, check whether troubleshooting or a model-specific service option is practical. If you are considering replacement, weigh the cost against the features you would gain and the problem you are trying to solve; age by itself does not establish that replacement is better.

- Identify the model. Use Apple’s model-number guide before seeking a replacement earbud or case.
- Describe the problem. Note the runtime you observe and any connection, sound, microphone, control, fit, or charging issue.
- Check service locally. Apple says it may need to inspect the product to provide a personalized out-of-warranty estimate. Final fees follow inspection, may be subject to tax or shipping, and options can depend on location and parts availability. Authorized providers may set their own fees.
- Compare the choices. Consider the local service estimate, whether a suitable replacement part is available, and whether a newer model’s features justify its cost for your needs.
Apple’s service page provides troubleshooting and routes to in-person or mail service. Check the current model- and location-specific estimate before comparing service with replacement; there is no single price that applies to every pair and region.
