IBM’s current branding commonly calls the platform IBM Power or Power servers. The name refers to server hardware—not to a particular operating system or a guarantee that every model supports the same software and features.
What does IBM Power Systems mean?
IBM Documentation defines the name this way: “IBM Power Systems is the name of the family of servers based on POWER® processors.” That wording appears in IBM’s POWER7 documentation, so readers may encounter it in material for older systems. IBM’s current Power overview presents the family as IBM Power and Power servers.

The terminology reflects IBM’s server platform across product generations; it does not mean that every generation has identical capabilities. When identifying a system, use its specific model and generation rather than relying on the family name alone.

Server hardware
IBM Power refers to servers built on IBM POWER processors. The hardware platform is distinct from the software that runs on it.

Operating systems
IBM lists AIX, IBM i, and Linux on Power as operating-system choices for Power servers. Support depends on the specific server model, generation, and software version; the family name alone does not establish that a particular combination is supported.
PowerVM virtualization
PowerVM is IBM’s virtualization environment for Power servers. It allows workloads to run in logical partitions and system resources to be shared. IBM describes PowerVM support across AIX, IBM i, and Linux environments. Available capabilities—including features such as Live Partition Mobility—depend on the PowerVM edition and hardware generation. See IBM’s Introduction to PowerVM, PowerVM overview, and PowerVM Editions overview for feature context.

What IBM Power Systems are used for
IBM positions Power servers for demanding business workloads and hybrid-cloud deployment. Those are IBM’s product claims, not a like-for-like independent benchmark against other server platforms. Actual suitability depends on the workload, application support, required operating system, capacity, availability needs, and where the system will be deployed.
What to check for a specific server
Before evaluating a Power server, verify the details for the exact model and generation:
Rank #3
- Whether the required operating system and version are supported.
- Whether the applications and integrations you need are certified or otherwise supported for that combination.
- Which PowerVM edition and virtualization features are available, if virtualization is part of the plan.
- Whether the system has the capacity and availability characteristics required by the workload.
- Whether the planned deployment location and operating model meet your organization’s requirements.
IBM’s product and documentation pages provide platform and feature information, but compatibility should be confirmed against the documentation for the particular system and software versions under consideration.
