If your TV picture looks stretched, zoomed in, or cut off, first check whether the TV’s own menu is distorted and whether another input looks the same. If the problem affects only one source, check that device’s display settings. If it affects the TV interface or persists across sources, the TV may need service.
How to tell where the distortion is coming from
A TV picture can look wrong because of the program’s original shape, the TV’s picture-size mode, or a connected device’s output settings. A quick comparison helps narrow it down before you change settings.

- Check the TV menu or home screen. If the interface itself looks stretched or distorted, the issue may be with the TV rather than a particular program.
- Switch to another source. Try another HDMI device or a broadcast source. If the problem appears on just one input, inspect that source device’s display or aspect-ratio settings.
- Compare different content. Black bars may be normal when a program’s shape does not match the screen.
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether distortion appears in the TV menu or across sources; distortion in the interface may indicate that repair is needed.

Adjust the picture-size setting
On the affected input, open the TV’s picture-size, screen mode, or aspect-ratio menu. Choose a mode that preserves the picture’s proportions, such as a standard widescreen or original-ratio mode. Exact names and availability vary by TV, input signal, and app.

Samsung lists options including 16:9 Standard, Custom, 4:3, Fit to Screen, and Zoom and Position. Some controls depend on the selected picture-size setting or input. See Samsung’s picture-size instructions and source-related guidance for model-dependent details.

Why black bars can be correct
Black bars do not necessarily mean the TV is malfunctioning. They can preserve the original shape of the content. A widescreen movie may show bars above and below on a 16:9 TV; older 4:3 material may show bars at the sides.

Zooming or stretching can reduce those bars, but may crop the edges or change proportions. If you want the entire image displayed as intended, keep an aspect-preserving mode even when bars remain. Sony explains these picture-shape trade-offs in its support guidance.

Check the connected device too
If the TV’s picture-size setting does not correct the problem, inspect the connected device’s display or aspect-ratio settings. Computers may have their own display scaling or aspect-ratio controls, so check both the computer and the TV’s wide mode. TV picture-size controls can also vary with the source, signal, model, or app.
If you use a remote’s Wide or Zoom button to reach these controls, confirm the instructions for your exact TV model. A remote button can open the setting, but it cannot correct a wrong output setting on a connected device or repair a TV fault.

When to seek TV service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified TV repair provider if the TV menu or home screen itself is distorted, or if the problem remains across different sources after you have checked the picture-size and source-device settings. These symptoms warrant diagnosis rather than repeated changes to zoom or stretch modes.
