The key is that JavaScript treats null, undefined, and "" as different inputs.
Why an empty-looking priority can fail validation
A report published on September 17, 2026 describes a task saved without a priority. Its database row returned priority: null. When the task was opened for editing, the schema’s preprocessing logic checked for undefined and converted that value to an empty string before validating against the priority enum LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, or URGENT. Since the actual input was null, the check did not run, and the enum received a value it did not accept. The account does not identify the database engine, form library, or software versions, and it is one reported example—not evidence of a widespread defect. The display is not proof of the value being validated. An empty-looking control, an omitted object key, an empty string, and a database null can travel through different representations. Check the actual value at each boundary rather than inferring it from the form’s appearance.
Is null the same as undefined in Zod?
No. Zod documents .optional() as allowing undefined, and .nullable() as allowing null. .nullish() permits both. These are distinct schema contracts, not interchangeable ways to describe an empty field. See Zod’s schema API documentation.

undefinedcan represent an absent value or a property whose value is undefined.nullis an explicit null value, such as the one returned in the reported database object.""is a string. It is not accepted by an enum of priority names unless the schema explicitly allows or transforms it.
Consequently, adding .optional() does not make a schema accept an actual null. Whether null should be accepted depends on what “no priority” means in the application.
How to fix the schema without hiding the contract
The reported correction changed the preprocessing check to recognize null and map it to "" before enum validation. That matches the reported input, but it works only if the inner schema also permits the normalized empty string or another transform handles it. An enum limited to the four priority names will still reject "".

For a form, choose one canonical representation for “no priority” and normalize deliberately at a boundary. Keep database representation, form state, and API meaning separate where their semantics differ. In an update contract, omission may mean “leave unchanged” and null may mean “clear,” but that is a design choice, not a rule imposed by Zod or established universally.

Trace the value from the record to the update
- Load an existing task with no priority. Inspect the fetched object and record whether the property is
null,undefined, omitted, or an empty string. - Check the edit form’s default and submitted values. Inspect the actual request payload; do not infer it from how the control looks.
- Run the edit input through the edit schema. Test the exact schema used on this path, and compare its input with parsed output if it preprocesses or transforms values. A create schema may have a different contract.
- Follow the server update behavior. Confirm whether the update writes null, skips an omitted key, or applies a default. Those choices determine whether a user can preserve, clear, or set the priority.
- Add explicit cases. Cover null, undefined or an omitted property, the empty string, and each valid enum value. Keep create and edit contracts aligned, or document why they differ.
These checks are a practical debugging method; they are not claims that the reported author tested every boundary or case.

Choose update semantics before broadening acceptance
Accepting null, undefined, and an empty string can stop a validation error while leaving the application’s meaning ambiguous. Decide whether “no priority” is stored as null, represented as an empty form value, or omitted from a patch. Then make the schema, client payload, and update logic agree. In particular, do not treat null as “leave unchanged” if the API uses it to clear a field, or normalize it away if callers need to distinguish clearing from omission.
