What Humanoid Robots Can and Can’t Do Reliably in Real-World Settings

Humanoid robots can repeat some bounded industrial tasks, but pilots and vendor claims do not prove general-purpose reliability. Here’s what the evidence shows and how to evaluate a real deployment.

Humanoid robots can repeat some narrowly defined tasks in structured workplaces, but current evidence does not show that they can reliably handle general-purpose work in messy, fast-moving or human-shared environments. A production pilot is evidence that a specific robot completed a specific job under specific conditions—not proof of broad reliability.

To judge a real-world claim, look beyond a successful demonstration or an “accuracy” percentage. Ask how often the robot completes the whole task, how much work it produces per shift, how often people intervene, and what safety, energy, integration and maintenance requirements make the result possible.

What can humanoid robots do reliably today?

The strongest evidence is for bounded, repetitive jobs in structured industrial settings: moving a known type of item along a defined route, or positioning components at a workstation. These tasks can be useful, but they are not equivalent to open-ended work requiring a robot to cope with arbitrary objects, unexpected obstacles and changing instructions.

Example What was reported What the evidence does—and does not—show
Figure 02 at BMW Plant Spartanburg BMW reported in 2026 that, during a ten-month 2025 pilot, Figure 02 moved more than 90,000 sheet-metal components for welding, operating five days a week on ten-hour shifts for about 1,250 operating hours. BMW said the work supported production of more than 30,000 X3 vehicles. BMW also reported repeatable positioning with millimeter accuracy. This is evidence for a defined task in a highly automated body shop, not arbitrary factory work or an independently measured industry-wide success rate.
Digit 4 at GXO’s Flowery Branch facility Agility Robotics reported that Digit 4 reached a cumulative milestone of 100,000 totes moved with about 98% accuracy while on task. The figure is vendor-reported and applies to accuracy while the robot was on task. It does not, by itself, establish total-shift availability, end-to-end reliability or performance across other sites and workflows.
Unitree G1 mobility assessment Fraunhofer IPA reported in 2026 that its tested G1 showed good self-stabilization and progress in some mobility areas. The institute still judged that substantial development was needed to meet industrial requirements overall. A mobility result does not establish capability in manipulation, cognition or safe operation for another task.

The BMW pilot also involved changes to the work area, including barriers and partitions. That matters: a robot’s performance in a prepared production cell cannot be assumed to transfer unchanged to an open workspace with different traffic, people and equipment.

What does “reliable” mean for a robot?

There is no suitable independent statistic in the cited evidence that establishes one reliability or success rate for humanoid robots as a whole. Reliability has to be defined for a particular job, operating window and environment. A percentage can sound impressive while answering only a narrow question—for example, whether a tote was handled correctly when the robot was already performing its task.

For a useful evaluation, request measurements with explicit definitions and denominators:

  • Task success: What counts as a completed job, and are retries, dropped items or damaged goods counted as failures?
  • Availability: What share of the scheduled shift was the robot able to work, including pauses, charging, faults and recovery?
  • Throughput: How many acceptable jobs were completed per hour or shift, compared with the existing workflow?
  • Human intervention: How often did an operator have to reset, guide, rescue or take over the robot?
  • Recovery: What happened after a failed grasp, blocked route, unexpected object or software fault?
  • Test conditions: How long was the evaluation, which loads and task variations were included, and was the result measured by the operator, vendor or an independent assessor?

These measures answer different questions. High on-task accuracy does not automatically mean high shift uptime; a long operating-hour total does not reveal throughput unless completed work and interruptions are also reported.

Which jobs remain difficult?

Variable handling and exceptions

Gartner’s January 2026 assessment identified mixed-SKU picking, trailer unloading and exception handling in high-velocity warehouses as beyond the dexterity, intelligence and adaptability of current models. In these settings, the robot must deal with items it may not have encountered before, changing layouts, occlusions and errors that do not follow a predictable script.

A robot that repeatedly moves one known tote between fixed points has a narrower problem than one that must select among mixed goods, decide how to grasp an unfamiliar item and recover safely when the first attempt fails.

Unrestricted work beside people

A human-like shape does not itself make a machine safe around people. Safe deployment depends on the robot’s behavior, its stopping and failure modes, the task, and the workplace controls. BMW’s Spartanburg pilot used barriers and partitions; that is evidence of a managed deployment, not proof that the same work can be done safely without separation.

Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 testing of one Unitree G1 configuration found collision forces above 500 newtons under the tested conditions—above pain thresholds allowed by the standard cited by the institute. Fraunhofer said a Bluetooth vulnerability in the software version it tested was later fixed. These findings apply to that model and tested version; they should not be generalized to all humanoid robots or taken as a description of current G1 software.

Long, mobile shifts

Battery life and energy use can constrain robots that travel extensively or perform demanding physical work. Runtime is meaningful only when paired with the task, load, duty cycle and charging conditions. A stated runtime does not say how much productive work occurs during a shift or what charging infrastructure and downtime are required.

Economic performance

A successful pilot does not establish a positive return on investment. The comparison should include integration, safety measures, charging, maintenance, supervision, downtime and the cost of the conventional machine or workflow being replaced. For some supply-chain tasks, Gartner says wheeled or polyfunctional robots may offer higher throughput and uptime while using less energy. That is a use-case-specific alternative, not a universal verdict on robot designs.

How mature is the market?

In January 2026, Gartner forecast that fewer than 100 companies would progress humanoid proof-of-concept projects beyond experimentation by 2028, and fewer than 20 would put humanoids into production for supply-chain or manufacturing use by that year. These are forecasts, not verified counts or guarantees of what will happen. Gartner described likely near-term deployments as tightly controlled and identified dexterity, adaptability, integration, cost, maintenance and battery life as challenges.

Examples of pilots should be read at their actual status. BMW described a European pilot with Hexagon AEON at Plant Leipzig, beginning with laboratory testing and planned gradual integration around high-voltage battery assembly and component production. BMW framed it as a test of suitable tasks and workstation adaptation, not as a proven production capability.

Agility Robotics announced Digit 5 with vendor-stated specifications of a repeated 50-pound (22.7 kg) lift, a 90-minute runtime and a nine-minute charge. At the time of the announcement, the company expected early access in the first half of 2027 and general availability by the end of 2027. Those figures and dates are vendor specifications and expectations, not independent results or proof of performance at every customer site. Agility also said Digit 4 had accumulated more than 65,000 operational hours; that company-reported total is not a system-wide reliability rate.

How to assess a humanoid robot for a real job

Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark framework evaluates basic and complex capabilities, cleanroom suitability, functional safety, cybersecurity and energy efficiency. Its companion navigator separates mobility, manipulation, cognition and safety/security. This is a useful way to avoid treating “humanoid capability” as one score: different jobs demand different combinations and levels of maturity.

  1. Define the job and setting. Specify the object, route, cycle, variation, human proximity and acceptable failure rate. Separate a structured, repeatable station from mixed-item work or exception handling.
  2. Match capabilities to the task. Check mobility, manipulation and cognition separately. Consider obstacles, stairs, payload, grip and force sensing, precision, decision-making and recovery after a failed grasp.
  3. Ask for a measured trial. Set the test window and require task success, completed work per hour, total-shift uptime and human interventions, with each denominator defined. Include normal variations and known failure cases.
  4. Evaluate safety and security in context. Review collision forces, obstacle detection, stability, stopping behavior, behavior during failures, emergency response, human proximity and cybersecurity. Confirm what safeguards or physical separation the deployment requires.
  5. Measure operating demands. Obtain runtime for the actual task and load, charging time and infrastructure needs, maintenance requirements, integration effort and fleet-coordination requirements.
  6. Compare the complete workflow. Measure total deployed cost and acceptable throughput against a conventional robot, a task-specific mobile platform or a redesigned process. Do not treat purchase price or a successful demo as the whole economic case.

Fraunhofer IPA’s navigator illustrates why the job matters: truck loading puts high demands on manipulation, cognition and safety, while structured machine operation requires less task flexibility. The right maturity threshold depends on the consequences of failure and the variation the system must handle.

What current evidence does—and does not—establish

Current public examples support the conclusion that humanoids can contribute to selected, prepared industrial tasks. They do not establish dependable general-purpose work across unstructured settings, a universal advantage over specialized automation, an industry-wide reliability rate or broad readiness for home care.

The form factor is not the proof. The useful proof is a task-specific record of completed work, uptime, interventions, safe behavior and operating cost under conditions close to the intended deployment. As Gartner analyst Abdil Tunca put it in January 2026, “The promise of humanoid robots is compelling, but the reality is that the technology remains immature and far from meeting expectations for versatility and cost-effectiveness.”
