How Exchange Rates Affect the Amount Your Family Receives

The rate applied to a remittance can change what your family receives. Compare the final payout, exchange rate, fees and transfer terms—not the headline fee alone.

The exchange rate determines how much destination currency your family receives for the money you send. A transfer with a low advertised fee can still deliver less if its exchange rate is less favorable, so compare the final amount to be received—not the fee alone.

How the exchange rate changes the payout

A remittance provider converts the amount you send from your currency into the recipient’s currency using the rate applied to your transfer. For a simple fixed-rate calculation, multiply the send amount by the quoted rate. If the quote is 1 unit of your currency = 100 units of the destination currency, sending 100 units converts to 10,000 destination-currency units before any deductions. At a lower rate of 98, the same send amount converts to 9,800.

This is a hypothetical illustration, not a live provider quote. A fee charged to you may be added to the amount you pay or taken from the amount converted; a receiving-side fee or other deduction may also reduce the payout. Check the quote to see what the recipient is promised to receive after applicable charges.

Why the advertised fee is not the whole cost

The rate a provider offers can differ from a market reference rate. The World Bank describes the difference as an exchange-rate margin and includes that margin, along with the transfer fee, in the total cost of a remittance. That means a low or zero headline fee does not by itself show which offer gives your family more.

For example, the World Bank’s United States-to-India corridor page reported average total costs in the third quarter of 2025 of 3.68% ($7.35) for a $200 send and 2.45% ($12.26) for a $500 send. The data collection window was August 4–28, 2025; these are dated corridor averages, not current quotes or a prediction of what a particular transfer will cost. The United States-to-Egypt corridor page reported a 5.36% average total cost, or $10.71 for a $200 send, in the third quarter of 2025, based on data collected August 20, 2025. Separately, the United States-to-Jamaica page displayed a 4.29% average total cost for that quarter; the available figures do not support calculating a consistent transaction-specific dollar cost from that percentage. These are different corridors, and neither is a live price comparison. World Bank: United States–Egypt corridor · World Bank: United States–Jamaica corridor

The World Bank’s Q3 2025 report says it measures total remittance cost as transfer fees plus foreign-exchange margins. It also reports that, in its defined comparison, credit or debit card became the cheapest funding method at 4.39%, with 2,992 services recorded. That finding is specific to the report’s comparison; it does not establish the cheapest method for every corridor or sender. World Bank: Remittance Prices Worldwide, Q3 2025 report

How to compare transfer offers fairly

Compare quotes for the same transaction. Changing the send amount, destination, funding method, payout method, or delivery speed can change the price and make the results misleading.

  1. Enter the same send amount and destination in each provider’s quote tool.
  2. Choose the same funding method, such as bank transfer or card, and the same payout method, such as bank deposit or cash pickup.
  3. Compare the final amount the recipient is promised in the destination currency, together with the exact exchange rate and sender fee.
  4. Check whether a receiving-side fee or other deduction may apply, and whether the quoted transfer speed meets your needs.
  5. Check when the rate is locked and whether it can change before the transfer is completed. Confirm the provider supports your sender-to-recipient corridor; do not assume terms are the same across routes.
  6. If the provider gives enough information, compare its applied rate with a stated market reference rate to understand the exchange-rate margin.

The World Bank notes that its database may not show all actual costs when exchange-rate information is unavailable or a remittance is paid in dollars. A displayed cost can therefore be incomplete in those circumstances. World Bank: Remittance Prices Worldwide methodology

Keep confirmation of the amount your family should receive

Before sending, review the transaction confirmation for the amount paid, fees, exchange rate applied, and final beneficiary amount in the requested currency. The World Bank says written confirmation of these details improves transparency and gives beneficiaries certainty about the amount they are entitled to collect. Keep the confirmation so you and your family can check the payout against the agreed amount. World Bank: General Principles for International Remittance Services
