How Live Activities Use Battery and Mobile Data on iPhone

Live Activities do not connect to the internet on their own. Learn how app updates affect data and battery, and how to check usage on iPhone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: A Live Activity card does not independently connect to the internet or continuously poll for updates. Its information is supplied by the app through ActivityKit or delivered via ActivityKit push notifications. That means any cellular data or battery use depends on the app’s update behavior, network conditions, and other app activity—not a fixed cost shared by every Live Activity. Apple does not publish a typical data-use or battery-drain figure.

How Live Activity updates reach your iPhone

Live Activities show current information for an ongoing task or event on places such as the Lock Screen and, on supported iPhones, the Dynamic Island. Apple says the Live Activity view runs in its own sandbox and cannot access the network or receive location updates. The card itself therefore does not make network requests.

Instead, the app can update an activity locally through ActivityKit, or the app’s server can send an ActivityKit push notification through Apple Push Notification service (APNs). Apple distinguishes this process from the timeline updates used by ordinary widgets. The display presents information supplied by those mechanisms; it is not an independent internet connection.

If connectivity is lost, an activity may stop receiving fresh information and become outdated. Apple’s developer documentation uses a sports activity as an example of information becoming stale when someone enters an area without network connectivity.

Does a Live Activity use mobile data?

It can be associated with data use when the app delivers updates over a network, but there is no universal amount to quote. Apple’s documentation does not specify a typical number of megabytes, a standard update interval, or a data cost per hour. Apps and events differ, and the available documentation does not establish how much data any particular app will use.

Apple documents a maximum combined size of 4 KB for a Live Activity’s static and dynamic data, including ActivityKit updates and push notifications. That is a payload-size constraint—not a measurement of total network traffic, a per-update allowance, or a typical usage figure.

To inspect or restrict cellular use, open Settings > Cellular, then review the app list. You can switch off cellular data for an app; Apple says the app will then use Wi-Fi for data. When Wi-Fi is unavailable, this can limit the app’s ability to receive data, and an activity may not stay current. The exact result can depend on the app.

Does a Live Activity drain battery?

Apple publishes no standard battery percentage or test result for Live Activities. Battery use can vary with what the app does, how often information is updated, signal strength, and the rest of your iPhone use. A battery chart can help identify app or system activity, but it does not necessarily separate the Live Activity display from other work by the same app.

To review usage, open Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage. Apple’s iPhone guide says the details can include app and system activity, such as background activity, cellular coverage, and notifications that wake the device. Treat these as clues about overall battery use rather than proof that a particular Live Activity alone caused a drain.

How to check and reduce observed use

  1. Check battery activity: Open Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage. Inspect the relevant app and system activity for the period you’re investigating, including background activity, cellular coverage, and notification activity.
  2. Check cellular data: Open Settings > Cellular and review the app list to see which apps used cellular data. If you want to restrict an app, turn off its cellular-data setting; it will use Wi-Fi for data instead.
  3. Prefer a strong connection: Apple’s general battery guidance says Wi-Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks, and that low cellular coverage can use more battery. These are general iPhone observations, not a Live Activity-specific comparison.
  4. End an activity that is no longer relevant: Use the app’s available controls when the associated event or task is over. Apple’s developer guidance says developers should end a Live Activity when its task or event ends, but the controls available to a user vary by app.

What to expect when you turn off cellular data

Turning off cellular data for an app does not itself end its Live Activity. It limits that app to Wi-Fi for data, so updates may be delayed or unavailable when Wi-Fi is not connected. Apple’s documentation does not promise a particular stale-activity behavior for every app; check the app’s controls if you need to stop or remove an activity.
