HDMI ARC, or Audio Return Channel, lets a TV send sound back to a connected soundbar or AV receiver through an HDMI cable. It removes the need for a separate audio cable for that connection. eARC is the enhanced version, designed to carry higher-bandwidth audio formats.
What does HDMI ARC mean?
ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. Usually, HDMI carries audio and video from a source device to a TV. ARC adds a return path, allowing the TV to send audio upstream over HDMI to a connected soundbar or AV receiver.

HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. describes ARC as a way for an HDMI-connected TV to send audio data upstream to an AVR or soundbar, eliminating the need for a separate audio cable for that link. The TV may be playing audio itself or receiving it from another connected source; ARC carries the TV’s audio to the external audio system. HDMI Specification 1.4b

eARC means Enhanced Audio Return Channel. It is the higher-bandwidth version of ARC, intended to pass audio formats that standard ARC cannot carry, including uncompressed and other high-bitrate audio. HDMI Licensing Administrator lists formats such as DTS Master, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos in its eARC guidance. HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview: eARC
#1 Best Overall
- TV HDMI eARC/ARC Audio Extractor: Extracts audio from your TV's eARC or ARC-enabled HDMI port and outputs it via Optical (Toslink/SPDIF) to soundbars, amplifiers, wireless headphones, or home theater systems —— Not Reversible, Converts audio output to Optical only | 📌Use correct HDMI port (No standard HDMI) | 📌Adjust TV volume via audio device.
- High-Resolution Audio Support: Achieves a 192kHz/24-bit sampling rate, ensuring high-fidelity, lossless audio transmission. Compatible with PCM 2.0, Dolby 5.1, and DTS 5.1 formats, delivering immersive and detailed sound.
- eARC Upgrade for Better Audio Performance: eARC provides significantly higher bandwidth than ARC, supporting lossless audio formats such as Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1, providing a superior audio experience for your home theater system.
- LED Audio Status Indicators: Includes LED indicators for 5.1-channel and 2.0-channel audio output, allowing you to easily monitor the audio mode in real-time for a seamless experience.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Delivers enhanced Electromagnetic shielding and Heat dissipation. Durable design ensures reliability in environments with multiple electronic devices, supporting stable signal integrity and consistent, professional-grade audio performance.
The practical distinction is format support: ARC handles a narrower range of audio, while eARC can carry higher-bandwidth formats. Whether you can use those formats depends on the capabilities of the TV, the soundbar or receiver, and the audio source.
HDMI ARC vs. eARC
| Feature | ARC | eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Audio Return Channel | Enhanced Audio Return Channel |
| Audio capability | Lower bandwidth; cannot pass the same higher-bandwidth formats as eARC. | Supports higher-bandwidth and uncompressed audio formats, subject to device support. |
| Device compatibility | Requires ARC support on the connected equipment. | Requires eARC support for eARC operation. HDMI says eARC is not defined to be backward compatible with ARC; some manufacturers make devices that support both. |
| Cable guidance | Check the equipment documentation for the cable requirements. | HDMI says Ultra HDMI Cables are designed to support eARC. Some other cable types might work but are not certified for eARC operation. |
HDMI Licensing Administrator’s FAQ states that “eARC is not defined to be backwards compatible with ARC.” That does not rule out a product supporting both: check the specifications for both the TV and the audio device rather than assuming that an eARC port will work with every ARC device. What do you need to use ARC or eARC?
- Compatible ports on both devices: Confirm that the TV and soundbar or receiver support the same return-channel feature. For eARC audio, both endpoints need eARC support.
- An HDMI cable that meets the equipment requirements: Follow the manufacturers’ guidance, particularly for eARC. HDMI identifies Ultra HDMI Cables as designed to support eARC; other cable types may work but are not certified for it. HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview: eARC
- Correct connections: Connect the TV’s ARC- or eARC-labeled HDMI port to the matching return-channel port on the soundbar or receiver. Port labels and setup details vary by device, so consult the manuals.
Does ARC also control the soundbar with the TV remote?
ARC carries audio; HDMI-CEC is a separate HDMI feature that can enable controls between connected devices, such as adjusting volume with one remote. CEC behavior depends on how each manufacturer implements it, so ARC alone does not guarantee that the TV remote will control the soundbar or receiver. RTINGS: What Is HDMI ARC/eARC?

When should you choose eARC?
If your TV and audio system both support eARC and you want to send higher-bandwidth or uncompressed formats from the TV, eARC is the relevant return-channel feature. If your devices support only ARC, ARC can still send TV audio over HDMI, but it does not provide eARC’s higher-bandwidth format support. Check the supported formats and connection requirements in the specifications for your exact devices.
