For console owners, storage is the upgrade most likely to matter. Grand Theft Auto VI is officially scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, so those consoles already establish the launch hardware. You cannot install a faster console CPU or graphics processor. If free space is your problem, add platform-compatible storage; it expands your library and makes installations easier, but it does not increase rendered resolution, frame rate or ray-tracing quality.
PC advice has to wait for official information. Rockstar and Take-Two have identified PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the reviewed official material does not announce a Windows version, PC release date or GTA VI system requirements. A sensible future PC build would emphasize a modern high-performance CPU, a ray-tracing-capable GPU and a fast NVMe SSD, yet those are planning priorities rather than confirmed GTA VI specifications.

The published specifications describe the baseline rather than a special “GTA VI edition.” Sony’s current PS5 manual lists an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor with eight cores and 16 threads, plus a 10-teraflop AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine. Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X product information lists a custom RDNA 2 GPU with 12 teraflops and 52 compute units. The Xbox Series S fact sheet identifies a 512GB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD. None of those documents states a GTA VI frame-rate target, resolution mode or additional upgrade requirement.
Upgrade priorities by platform
| Situation | Most defensible upgrade | What it changes | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 with limited free space | Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | More room for installations and updates; easier game management | No GTA VI-specific performance gain or required capacity has been published |
| Xbox Series X|S with limited free space | Supported expansion-storage format | More usable game storage | It does not add CPU or GPU performance |
| Xbox Series X owner | No core-console upgrade is available | The existing launch platform is the relevant hardware baseline | No official GTA VI mode or frame-rate target is stated |
| PC owner waiting for a port | Delay a GTA VI-specific purchase; plan CPU, GPU and NVMe improvements only for broader needs | Better preparation for demanding modern games generally | No Windows version, date, minimum specification, recommended specification or budget is official |
| Any console owner seeking smoother presentation | High-refresh 4K display with VRR | Can make a supported game mode look and feel smoother | A display cannot raise the console’s rendered frame rate |
PS5: when an M.2 SSD expansion is worthwhile
The PS5 has an internal M.2 SSD expansion connector documented by Sony. This is the clearest hardware path for an owner whose internal drive is filling up with large games, patches and downloadable content. It is a capacity solution, not a graphics upgrade.
What the expansion can and cannot do
- It can: provide additional space for compatible game installations, reduce the need to delete and redownload titles, and make room for future updates.
- It cannot: add CPU cores, increase the PS5 GPU’s 10-teraflop figure, change the console’s graphics settings or guarantee a higher GTA VI frame rate.
- It may help operationally: keeping more games installed can save time when switching between releases, but no official GTA VI loading-time result has been published.
How to choose and install one
- Check the exact Sony requirements first. Sony’s current guidance specifies compatible M.2 SSD characteristics, supported capacity ranges and heatsink requirements. Confirm those details immediately before buying because firmware guidance and retail models can change.
- Choose capacity for your library, not for a rumored game size. GTA VI’s official installation size has not been announced. Select enough space for the games you actually keep installed and leave room for updates.
- Use a heatsink that fits the expansion bay. A drive that exceeds the documented physical limits can prevent the cover from closing or interfere with airflow. Follow Sony’s clearance guidance for the drive and heatsink as a pair.
- Power the console down completely and unplug it. Install the module only after the system is off, using the PS5 manual for the cover and expansion-bay procedure. Do not force the retaining screw, spacer or module.
- Let the console format the drive when prompted. Formatting erases the new drive. Back up anything on it before installation, then use the system’s storage-management screen to move or install games.
- Keep the manual and model information. If the console does not detect the module, remove power, reseat the drive and recheck the compatibility and heatsink dimensions before assuming the SSD is defective.
Prices are not fixed by Sony and vary with capacity, controller type, heatsink design and market conditions. Because the expansion is removable and does not alter the console’s processor or graphics hardware, it is a relatively reversible purchase compared with replacing an entire system.

Xbox Series X|S: expansion storage is the practical upgrade
Xbox Series systems use a dedicated expansion-storage format rather than the PS5’s internal M.2 connector. If the internal drive is the constraint, use storage explicitly supported for the Series family and follow the console’s setup prompts. Do not assume that any ordinary external drive provides the same capability as the supported expansion format.

Series X and Series S are different baselines
The Series X is listed with a custom RDNA 2 graphics processor rated at 12 teraflops and 52 compute units. The Series S fact sheet lists a 512GB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD. These figures describe the consoles themselves; they are not a promise that GTA VI will expose a particular resolution or performance mode on either model.
Adding expansion storage does not turn a Series S into a Series X. It does not add compute units, increase memory bandwidth or change the console’s CPU. It simply gives you more space for games and updates. If your Series console already has adequate free space, buying storage for GTA VI alone has no confirmed benefit until Rockstar publishes the game’s installation and update requirements.
When to buy expansion storage
- Buy when you are routinely deleting games to install another title.
- Buy when large updates repeatedly consume the remaining free space.
- Wait when storage is comfortable and your reason is only a rumor about GTA VI’s size or performance.
- Keep the purchase platform-specific: Series expansion hardware is not interchangeable with the PS5 M.2 solution.
Microsoft has not published an official GTA VI storage requirement in the material available for this guide, so no reliable capacity recommendation can be stated. Capacity, supported format and current retail pricing should be checked at the time of purchase.

For launch, it is the relevant Xbox hardware because Xbox Series X|S is an officially announced platform. “Enough” does not mean that every visual option or frame-rate mode is known today; Rockstar has not published those targets. It means there is no announced need to replace a Series X with a newer Xbox in order to play the launch version.

The same logic applies to the PS5. The published PS5 CPU and GPU specifications are the hardware on which the launch version is being prepared. A storage expansion can solve capacity pressure, while a display can improve how a supported mode is perceived, but neither changes the rendering capability of the console.
Will an SSD make GTA VI run faster?
On a console, adding storage does not make the fixed CPU or GPU run faster. It primarily prevents capacity-related problems: uninstalling games, waiting for redownloads and juggling updates. Sony describes the PS5’s custom CPU, GPU and SSD integration as enabling rapid data access for game design, but that statement concerns the console’s integrated architecture, not a guarantee that installing an aftermarket expansion drive will raise GTA VI’s frame rate.
On a future PC build, a fast NVMe SSD is a sensible planning priority because modern open-world games stream large amounts of environmental data. That is a general hardware rationale, not an official GTA VI requirement or benchmark. Until Rockstar publishes PC specifications and testing, treat any claim that a particular SSD will deliver a specific frame rate or loading time as unverified.
PC owners: what to upgrade now and what to postpone
There is no confirmed Windows release, PC launch date or GTA VI minimum or recommended specification in the reviewed Rockstar and Take-Two materials. No official frame-rate target, graphics preset requirement or upgrade budget has been provided either. Buying a graphics card or processor specifically “for GTA VI” therefore means buying against a rumor.

Use a conditional planning hierarchy
| Component | Reasonable future priority | Why it matters in an open-world game | Confidence for GTA VI |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Modern high-performance processor | Simulation, traffic, artificial intelligence and other recurring world updates can place sustained demands on processor consistency | Planning guidance only; no official model or core-count requirement |
| GPU | Capable ray-tracing graphics card | Provides headroom for lighting, reflections and image-quality features if a PC version supports them | Planning guidance only; no official GPU, VRAM or preset requirement |
| Storage | Fast NVMe SSD with sufficient free capacity | Supports fast access to streamed assets and leaves room for a large installation and patches | Planning guidance only; no official size or benchmark |
If your current PC already struggles with other demanding games, upgrade for those games and your normal workload, not for a guessed GTA VI specification. A balanced system is preferable to buying an oversized GPU while leaving a weak processor or slow, nearly full system drive. If your current games run well, postponing a GTA VI-specific purchase preserves money and lets you respond to official requirements rather than speculation.
What evidence should trigger a PC purchase?
- An official PC announcement: confirms that a Windows build exists and identifies the release window.
- Published minimum and recommended specifications: reveal the processor, graphics card, memory, storage and operating-system expectations.
- Clear performance targets: show which resolution, quality preset and frame rate each specification is intended to achieve.
- Independent testing after release: can expose whether a listed requirement is comfortable, marginal or aimed at a particular visual mode.
Until those facts appear, avoid treating alleged screenshots, retailer listings or unnamed “leaks” as a purchasing specification.

A high-refresh 4K display with variable refresh rate (VRR) can improve perceived smoothness when a game offers a compatible performance mode and the console can sustain the corresponding output. It does not create additional frames. The console still determines the rendered resolution, frame rate and graphics features.

A practical buying decision
Choose storage when the problem is space
Measure the free space shown in your console’s storage menu and consider how many games you keep installed. If you repeatedly remove titles, a compatible PS5 M.2 SSD or supported Xbox expansion-storage device addresses the actual problem. Capacity and compatibility are the decision criteria; teraflops and frame-rate claims are not.
Choose a display when the problem is presentation
If your television lacks 4K, high refresh or VRR and you also play other compatible games, a display can improve perceived motion and image quality. It remains a presentation upgrade, not a console-performance upgrade.
Wait when the problem is an uncertain PC requirement
Do not spend against an invented GTA VI minimum specification. Reassess after Rockstar confirms a PC version and publishes requirements. If you need a PC upgrade sooner, select parts that improve your existing workload and current demanding games.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each reader
- PS5 owner: add a Sony-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD only if capacity is limiting you; verify the latest compatibility, capacity and heatsink instructions.
- Xbox Series owner: use the supported expansion-storage format when internal space is insufficient; it will not add rendering power.
- Xbox Series X owner: your console is an announced launch platform, so there is no confirmed reason to replace it for GTA VI.
- PC owner: wait for an official Windows announcement and specifications; meanwhile prioritize a strong CPU, ray-tracing-capable GPU and NVMe storage only when those upgrades already make sense for your broader gaming needs.
- Display shopper: high-refresh 4K with VRR can make supported modes feel smoother, but it cannot raise the frame rate produced by the console.
