For the full, currently documented DLSS 5 feature set, you need a GeForce RTX 50-series graphics card and a game that has implemented DLSS 5. NVIDIA’s support matrix lists the RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, 5070, 5060 Ti, 5060 and 5050 for DLSS 5 neural rendering and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB is the best balanced choice when you can buy it near its $749 MSRP; the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is the lower-cost option for 1080p and 1440p systems.

The short answer: buy an RTX 50-series card

NVIDIA’s current feature comparison identifies the GeForce RTX 50 series as the documented hardware path for the complete DLSS 5 feature set. That includes DLSS 5 neural rendering, described by NVIDIA as 3D-guided neural rendering, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. The supported family comprises the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5070, RTX 5060 Ti, RTX 5060 and RTX 5050.

Older GeForce RTX generations are not equivalent to an RTX 50 card for this purpose. NVIDIA’s matrix still lists DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction on RTX 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-series cards. Frame Generation is listed on RTX 40 and RTX 50. The matrix does not list the full DLSS 5 neural-rendering and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation feature set for RTX 20, RTX 30 or RTX 40 cards.

That distinction matters when a retailer or game menu uses the broad “DLSS” label. A card can support an older DLSS mode without supporting every DLSS 5 option. Check the individual game’s graphics settings and its current support notes rather than assuming that any RTX logo means DLSS 5.

What DLSS 5 actually does

NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 announcement describes DLSS 5 as “a real-time neural rendering model that infuses pixels with photoreal lighting and materials.” The model receives a game’s rendered color data and motion vectors, then generates lighting and material detail in real time, at resolutions up to 4K. NVIDIA says developers integrate it through the Streamline framework shared with DLSS and Reflex.

This is more than a driver-level switch. The game must provide the data and integration hooks that DLSS 5 expects. Developers can expose controls for intensity, color grading and masking, so the same GPU can produce different results in different games. A title may use a conservative effect, a strong cinematic look or masks that limit neural changes around particular objects.

NVIDIA places DLSS 5 in a longer progression of neural graphics technology and cites a historical 375,000-fold increase in compute. That figure is context for the evolution of graphics hardware and software; it is not a performance rating for an RTX 5070 Ti or any other individual card. NVIDIA also says DLSS technology has been integrated into more than 750 games.

“Not listed” means NVIDIA’s current comparison does not document that feature for the generation; it is not a promise that a future game or software update will never add a related mode. Feature availability can also depend on the game, driver and release date.

Which RTX 50 cards can run DLSS 5?

Every model named in NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series comparison is on the documented DLSS 5 path:

  • GeForce RTX 5090
  • GeForce RTX 5080
  • GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • GeForce RTX 5070
  • GeForce RTX 5060 Ti
  • GeForce RTX 5060
  • GeForce RTX 5050

Therefore, the answer to “Can an RTX 5060 Ti run DLSS 5?” is yes, provided the game implements DLSS 5 and the system is using the required current NVIDIA software. The 16GB RTX 5060 Ti is the version Tom’s Guide positions for stronger 1440p play; it is the sensible configuration when you want this feature at a lower entry price.

The game and software requirements are just as important as the GPU

The game must implement DLSS 5

DLSS 5 is integrated by the game developer. Installing an RTX 50 card does not add DLSS 5 to every title automatically. Look for a DLSS 5 or neural-rendering option in the game’s graphics menu and read the developer’s release notes for that specific build.

Launch coverage identified NBA 2K27 as the first official release and reported that RTX 40 support was planned for later expansion. Treat that as release-specific information: verify the game version, supported GPU generations and date of the developer’s announcement before buying hardware on the assumption that an older card will gain the feature.

Keep the NVIDIA software stack current

Use a current NVIDIA driver and the game’s current patch. DLSS components, Streamline integration and game-specific profiles can change through software updates. If the option is missing, check the driver version, restart the game after updating, and confirm that the title’s release notes list your GPU generation.

Expect game-by-game visual differences

Because developers control intensity, color grading and masking, DLSS 5 is not a fixed visual preset. Compare the game’s quality modes at your target resolution and use screenshots or an in-game camera to check fine geometry, reflections, particles and UI elements. A setting that looks excellent in one title may be too strong or too subtle in another.

Do you need a new CPU, RAM, storage or power supply?

NVIDIA does not publish one universal DLSS 5 minimum for the CPU, memory, storage or power supply in the cited announcement. Those parts should be matched to the exact graphics card, target resolution, desired frame rate and game.

CPU

DLSS changes the rendering workload, but it does not remove the game’s simulation, animation, asset streaming or driver overhead. A processor that already limits your frame rate can remain the limiting part after a GPU upgrade. Check whether your current system is GPU-limited in the games you play before replacing the CPU. If the GPU is below full utilization while the frame rate is stuck, a processor or game-engine limit may be involved.

Memory and storage

Use the game’s own system requirements as the starting point for RAM and storage. DLSS 5 does not create a single memory requirement that applies to every title. Leave enough free storage for the game, patches and shader caches, and avoid treating the presence of DLSS as a substitute for the developer’s baseline requirements.

Power supply and connectors

Confirm the recommended wattage, connector type and cable arrangement against the specific card manufacturer’s specification. Board designs can differ within the same GPU model. Check connector clearance before closing the case, route cables without sharp bends at the plug, and make sure the power supply has the required native connectors or an approved adapter for that board.

Case fit and cooling

Measure the card’s length, height, thickness and radiator or front-fan clearance. RTX 50 cards can have substantially different coolers from one board partner to another. Adequate case airflow helps the card sustain its intended clocks; a card that physically fits but blocks every intake fan is not a successful upgrade.

Best-value RTX choices for DLSS 5

Buyer profile Recommended card Why it fits
Balanced 1440p or entry-level 4K build GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB RTX 50-series DLSS 5 support, 16GB class and the strongest balance identified by Tom’s Guide; target its $749 MSRP rather than accepting any price premium.
Lower-cost 1080p or 1440p build GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB RTX 50-series DLSS 5 support at a lower performance tier; the 16GB model is positioned for stronger 1440p use.
Maximum performance regardless of cost GeForce RTX 5090 Top-end RTX 50 option and the model NVIDIA used in its 2025 path-tracing and neural-shader history; its value is poor for most buyers.

Why the RTX 5070 Ti 16GB is the value sweet spot

The RTX 5070 Ti 16GB is the best all-round recommendation when its street price is close to the $749 MSRP. Tom’s Guide calls it the “sweet spot” of NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series. That positioning reflects a useful combination: the card is in the RTX 50 family required for the documented DLSS 5 feature set, carries 16GB of graphics memory, and is aimed at the 1440p-to-entry-4K range rather than only basic 1080p play.

Do not interpret the MSRP as a guaranteed purchase price. GPU pricing, stock and board availability are volatile, and observed prices can be much higher. Set a maximum premium before shopping. If the 5070 Ti is heavily marked up, the value calculation changes and the 5060 Ti 16GB may be the more rational purchase for a 1080p or moderate 1440p target.

Its 16GB capacity is also a planning advantage for high-resolution textures and ray-traced settings, but capacity alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate. Compare native rendering performance, ray-tracing load, cooler size, power requirements and the games you actually play.

When the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB makes more sense

The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is the lower-cost route to the documented RTX 50-series DLSS 5 features. It is suited to buyers whose display and game settings target 1080p or 1440p and who accept a lower baseline frame rate than the 5070 Ti provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the 16GB configuration when the price difference is reasonable and you expect to keep the card for several years. Tom’s Guide specifically positions that model for stronger 1440p play. At 1080p, the card can still benefit from DLSS features in demanding ray-traced games, but enabling frame-generation modes should follow a satisfactory native or upscaled base frame rate rather than being used to hide severe stutter.

Who should buy an RTX 5090?

The RTX 5090 is the choice for maximum RTX 50-series performance when cost, power, noise and case size are secondary. NVIDIA used it in its 2025 path-tracing and neural-shader history, and it sits at the top of the listed family.

It is not the value recommendation. Buying the flagship only for the DLSS 5 badge spends substantially more for capability that is also present on less expensive RTX 50 cards. It makes sense when you have a high-resolution, high-refresh target, a demanding ray-tracing workload and a system that can support the board’s power and physical requirements.

How to choose the right card before you order

  1. List the games and displays that matter. Record your monitor resolution and refresh rate, then check whether your favorite titles have announced or shipped DLSS 5 support.
  2. Set a baseline-performance target. Compare native or standard DLSS Super Resolution performance before considering generated frames. The GPU still has to render the underlying scene, and a weak base frame rate can feel poor even when a counter reports a high generated rate.
  3. Choose the resolution tier. Use the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for a cost-conscious 1080p/1440p build, or consider the RTX 5070 Ti 16GB for a balanced 1440p or entry-4K system.
  4. Check ray-tracing workload. Games with heavy ray tracing can shift the value calculation toward a faster card. Do not compare cards using only a non-ray-traced title if ray tracing is central to your library.
  5. Verify memory and board design. Check VRAM capacity, card dimensions, connector requirements, recommended PSU wattage and cooler thickness for the exact model, not just the GPU name.
  6. Compare street price with MSRP. Recheck the price immediately before purchase. A large premium can make the next model down or a different board design a better value.
  7. Update software after installation. Install the current NVIDIA driver, patch the game, enable DLSS 5 where the title exposes it, and evaluate image quality at your normal camera distance.

Baseline rendering still matters with frame generation

DLSS 5’s neural rendering and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation can increase the number of displayed frames, but they do not turn a slow simulation into a responsive one. The game still needs to produce input frames, run its CPU-side work and maintain consistent frame pacing. Start by selecting a quality mode that delivers a stable base result, then test frame-generation options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For competitive games, latency and clarity may matter more than the highest displayed-frame counter. For a single-player ray-traced game, additional generated frames may be more attractive. Your monitor’s refresh rate, the game’s input model and your tolerance for artifacts should determine the setting.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Assuming every RTX card supports DLSS 5

RTX 20, 30 and 40 cards retain important DLSS capabilities, but NVIDIA’s current matrix does not list them for the complete DLSS 5 feature set. Confirm the exact feature rather than relying on the family name.

Buying before checking game support

A compatible GPU cannot enable a feature that the game has not integrated. Check the title’s current patch notes and graphics menu, especially when coverage says support is planned rather than already released.

Using MSRP as a promise

The $749 figure for the RTX 5070 Ti is its MSRP, not a guaranteed street price. Stock and retailer pricing can move the card far away from that level. Recalculate the value at the price you can actually pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the rest of the build

Insufficient PSU capacity, a connector mismatch, a case that cannot provide clearance, or a CPU bottleneck can undermine an otherwise suitable GPU purchase. Validate those constraints before ordering.

Judging only by generated-frame counters

Compare frame pacing, latency and image quality as well as the headline frame rate. DLSS 5 controls differ by game because developers set intensity, color grading and masking.

What to expect from older RTX cards

An RTX 20-, 30- or 40-series owner does not need to discard the card to use DLSS technologies already supported by that generation. Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction remain listed across RTX 20 through RTX 50, while Frame Generation is listed for RTX 40 and RTX 50. The limitation is specifically the currently documented full DLSS 5 path, not every DLSS feature.

If a developer later expands DLSS 5 support to an older generation, follow that game’s announcement and driver requirements. Until then, treat an RTX 50-series purchase as the straightforward choice when DLSS 5 itself is the goal.

Bottom line for each buyer

  • Best overall value: GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB, but only when the price is reasonably close to the $749 MSRP.
  • Best lower-cost entry: GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for 1080p and 1440p systems that accept lower baseline performance.
  • Fastest option: GeForce RTX 5090 for buyers prioritizing maximum performance over value.
  • Minimum generation for the full documented feature set: GeForce RTX 50 series, with a DLSS 5-enabled game and current NVIDIA software.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang summarized the company’s positioning in the March 16, 2026 release: “DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics — blending handcrafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression.” The practical buying decision is less dramatic: confirm the game, choose the RTX 50 performance tier that matches your display, and verify price, power and case compatibility before purchasing.
