What Hardware and Software Do You Need to Process Terabytes of Market Data?

Terabyte-scale market-data processing is an I/O- and memory-sensitive data-platform problem, not simply a request for the fastest processor. A practical design combines durable object or parallel storage for the system of record, compressed partitioned columnar files for analytics, enterprise NVMe for cache and spill space, a CPU-first distributed query and ETL layer, and high-speed networking. GPUs are optional: add them only when profiling proves that a workload is sufficiently parallel and the software can keep the devices fed. Start with a measured single-node system, then scale to a CPU cluster or burst into cloud HPC when utilization, working-set size, concurrency or latency requires it.

What a terabyte-scale market-data platform must do

Market data is usually immutable at the raw-ingest layer but expensive to parse, normalize, sort, join and scan. Tick feeds, order-book updates, reference data, corporate actions and derived bars have different access patterns. Your platform therefore needs separate tiers rather than one giant disk or one oversized server.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • System of record: durable object storage or a parallel file system holds raw feeds and historical snapshots with replication, retention and recovery policies.
  • Analytics layout: normalized, compressed, partitioned columnar files (such as Parquet or Arrow-compatible layouts) reduce bytes read and allow predicate pruning.
  • Hot working space: enterprise NVMe stores active partitions, sort runs, join spill files, indexes and temporary extracts.
  • Compute: CPUs handle ingestion, decompression, parsing, joins, SQL and orchestration; accelerators handle only profiled parallel workloads.
  • Control plane: scheduling, quotas, retries, lineage, quality checks, security and observability keep a multi-user system reliable.

Storage throughput and data locality often determine performance before raw CPU frequency does. NVIDIA notes that file format changes access rates, local NVMe can stage or cache data, and large datasets can become I/O-bound. A fast CPU waiting on remote storage is still a slow market-data system.

Hardware requirements

CPU: prioritize sustained throughput and feed capacity

Choose server CPUs with enough physical cores for concurrent parsing, decompression, joins, compression, query workers and operating-system tasks. High core counts are useful when work scales across independent symbols or partitions, but single-thread latency can still matter for parts of a parser or a latency-sensitive query. Measure both: a machine that has many cores but cannot feed them from storage will not deliver its theoretical throughput.

For a GPU server, NVIDIA recommends at least two CPU sockets and six physical CPU cores per GPU. Treat that as a reference configuration, not a universal market-data rule: the right ratio depends on whether the CPU is merely launching kernels or is also decoding feeds and preparing batches.

RAM: size the active working set, not the archive

There is no honest universal RAM number for “a terabyte of data.” Keep only the data needed by concurrent queries, joins, aggregations, sort stages and model features in memory, then add headroom for the operating system, filesystem cache and other users. A useful sizing exercise is:

  1. List the largest simultaneous query and ETL stages.
  2. Estimate their decompressed input, hash tables, sort buffers and intermediate results.
  3. Add operating-system, database and cache headroom.
  4. Repeat the calculation for peak concurrency, not average usage.

Use ECC memory. Azure describes memory-intensive HPC configurations of 1–4 TB when a workload must hold massive datasets in memory. NVIDIA’s 2026 GPU-server configuration guide specifies system memory of at least twice the total installed GPU memory. That ratio is a GPU reference point; CPU-only systems should be sized from their measured working sets and spill behavior.

Storage: separate durable history from fast scratch

Keep raw and historical data in durable object or parallel storage. Write an immutable raw zone and a normalized, compressed columnar zone partitioned by fields that match real filters. Date is usually essential; venue, instrument and feed can be additional partition keys when they prevent large scans. Avoid over-partitioning into millions of tiny files, which creates metadata and scheduling overhead.

Place active partitions, local indexes, sort runs and spill files on enterprise NVMe. NVIDIA recommends one local NVMe device per CPU socket and at least 1 TB in its GPU-server configurations. The capacity you need for a CPU analytics node can be larger because temporary joins and backfills may require several times the final output; determine that multiplier with representative jobs rather than a generic rule.

Single-node storage tier Read throughput Write throughput How to interpret it
Good 4 GB/s 2 GB/s Baseline tier in NVIDIA’s DGX H200 guidance.
Better 8 GB/s 4 GB/s Higher scan and staging capacity for concurrent jobs.
Best 40 GB/s 20 GB/s High-end tier for workloads that can keep the pipeline busy.

Those are guidance tiers, not a benchmark for a particular market-data database. Validate sustained throughput with your compression, file sizes, query predicates and concurrency.

Network: size for aggregate storage and shuffle traffic

A single node may use 25–100 GbE, depending on how much data it reads remotely and how many users share it. Multi-node ETL adds shuffle traffic: rows move between workers for joins, grouping and repartitioning. Size the fabric for aggregate reads plus shuffle, not for the average bandwidth of one worker.

PCIe topology matters when NVMe devices, NICs and GPUs compete for lanes or cross-socket transfers. Map which device is attached to which CPU socket and bind processes accordingly. NVIDIA lists 200 Gbps minimum NICs for multi-node inference and up to 400 Gbps per GPU in certified configurations; those figures illustrate accelerator-class networking, not a requirement for every CPU cluster.

GPUs: an optimization, not a prerequisite

Do not buy GPUs merely because the dataset is large. GPUs help when an operation is highly parallel, has a compatible implementation and can receive data quickly enough to stay occupied. Examples include certain numerical transforms, feature calculations and machine-learning training. Ingestion, decompression, irregular joins, SQL planning and orchestration are commonly CPU-first.

GPU acceleration also requires GPU memory, CPU feed capacity, balanced PCIe connections and storage bandwidth. NVIDIA reports more than 27 GB/s direct-to-GPU reads with GPUDirect Storage in the DGX SuperPOD fabric. That is a platform-specific result, not a promise for a general server. Profile kernel time, host-to-device transfer time, storage wait time and end-to-end job time before and after acceleration.

Operating system, drivers and reproducibility

Linux is the common server base for this class of system. Pin and test kernel, filesystem, database, CUDA (if used), GPU firmware and NIC-driver versions. Keep a reproducible image or configuration definition so a driver update cannot silently change query plans, device visibility or file-system behavior.

Data format and layout

Retain raw feeds for audit and replay, then produce normalized columnar datasets with explicit schemas, compression and statistics. Partition by date and, where it matches access patterns, venue, instrument or feed. Store timestamps with an unambiguous time zone and preserve the source sequence or event identifier needed to detect drops and duplicates.

Column pruning and predicate pushdown are often worth more than adding cores: a query that needs five columns should not read fifty. Compact small files, but do so without creating long rewrite windows that block fresh data. Maintain separate schemas for raw, normalized and derived data so a correction can be traced back to its source.

Query and ETL engines

Use vectorized SQL or dataframe tools on one node for exploration, validation and workloads that fit the working set. Move to Apache Spark or another distributed engine for large joins, historical backfills and transformations that exceed one node. AWS specifically describes Apache Spark through Amazon EMR for data-heavy financial calculations.

Scheduling and orchestration

A multi-node platform needs a scheduler such as Kubernetes, Slurm or a managed equivalent. Define queues or pools for ingestion, interactive queries, batch ETL and model training. Add workflow retries, idempotent stages, quotas and back-pressure: when downstream storage or a quality check is unavailable, ingestion should slow safely rather than create an unbounded backlog.

AWS describes centralized schedulers for multi-tenant financial grids. Azure notes that workload managers and parallel filesystems add operational complexity. Keep the control plane small and observable, and document who can change resource limits or rerun a historical partition.

Governance, security and operations

  • Maintain a catalog with schemas, owners, retention, partition locations and freshness.
  • Run row-count, timestamp-order, duplicate, gap, range and reconciliation checks at ingest and after transformations.
  • Use a reliable time source and record clock offsets; event-time ordering is central to market-data correctness.
  • Encrypt data in transit and at rest, enforce least-privilege identities, and retain audit logs for reads, writes and schema changes.
  • Track lineage from raw file and feed sequence through each derived table or feature set.
  • Monitor ingest lag, scan and shuffle throughput, NVMe fullness, spill volume, memory pressure, CPU and GPU utilization, failed tasks and cost.

Choosing an architecture

Compare designs using sustained scan and shuffle throughput, query latency, active working-set memory, storage and network bandwidth, fault tolerance, security and compliance, operator skill, and total cost at expected utilization. Azure frames HPC choices as trade-offs among performance, cost, security and operational complexity.

Architecture Best fit Advantages Limits and obligations
Single powerful server Research, development and moderate concurrency Lowest operational complexity; excellent local-NVMe performance; simple debugging Finite CPU, RAM, NVMe and fault-tolerance ceiling; one failure can stop work
CPU cluster Large ETL, joins, backfills and independent simulations Horizontal capacity; good general-purpose economics; resilient worker replacement Requires scheduler, distributed storage, shuffle tuning and network capacity
GPU cluster Highly parallel numerical transforms and machine learning High throughput for compatible kernels Higher capital and operational complexity; needs GPU memory, feed bandwidth and balanced PCIe topology
Cloud or hybrid Variable demand, burst processing and rapid experiments Elastic capacity, rapid provisioning and pay-as-you-go usage Recurring and data-transfer costs, quota management, identity design and dependency on network access

When one server is the right starting point

Choose one large ECC-RAM server with multiple enterprise NVMe devices when most queries fit one node, users value predictable latency and the team is small. Keep durable history outside the server or replicate it so a local failure does not become data loss. Instrument the system from day one; a measured baseline makes later cluster decisions defensible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a CPU cluster pays off

Scale horizontally when backfills occupy the machine for too long, independent partitions can run concurrently, or interactive users compete with ingestion. Use distributed storage and a scheduler, then test skew and shuffle behavior. Azure identifies loosely coupled investment-portfolio what-if runs as a workload for which ordinary networks can be sufficient, so not every simulation needs an ultra-low-latency fabric.

When cloud or hybrid capacity is justified

On-premises capacity is attractive for predictable, continuously utilized workloads and strict control of data placement. Cloud capacity is useful for seasonal peaks, new datasets, rapid provisioning and burst jobs. AWS describes financial grids that burst from on-premises systems into elastic cloud clusters and can source market or static data through cloud services. Azure similarly distinguishes predictable continuous workloads from variable demand that benefits from burst capacity and pay-as-you-go economics.

Hybrid designs need explicit data-transfer paths, identity federation, encryption, egress budgets and a policy for which datasets may leave the private environment. Moving terabytes can take longer and cost more than the compute job, so stage only the partitions required for a burst.

A practical sizing and rollout procedure

  1. Define workloads: capture the feeds, symbols, date ranges, joins, aggregations, latency targets and peak concurrent users that matter.
  2. Build representative samples: include compressed raw files, realistic partition counts, skewed instruments, corrections and the largest expected join.
  3. Measure a single node: record decompression rate, sustained reads and writes, CPU utilization, memory high-water mark, spill volume and end-to-end latency.
  4. Choose the data layout: compare partition keys, file sizes, compression and column pruning using the same query set.
  5. Set capacity thresholds: define acceptable ingest lag, NVMe fullness, memory pressure, queue time and failure-recovery time.
  6. Scale only the bottleneck: add RAM for working-set pressure, NVMe for scans and spills, CPU for parsing or joins, network for remote reads and shuffle, or GPUs for measured parallel kernels.
  7. Test failure and recovery: restore raw data, rerun an interrupted partition, replace a worker and verify that lineage and audit records remain complete.
  8. Recheck economics: compare hardware ownership and operations with cloud burst costs at actual utilization, including storage, transfer and idle capacity.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying GPUs before profiling

Symptom: GPU utilization is low while CPUs wait on file reads or preprocessing. Fix: benchmark the CPU pipeline first, then accelerate only the measured parallel stage and verify storage can supply it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Under-sizing scratch storage

Symptom: joins fail despite sufficient final-dataset capacity because sort and spill files fill the local volume. Fix: measure peak temporary usage, reserve headroom and monitor NVMe fullness separately from durable-storage capacity.

Treating RAM as a function of raw terabytes

Symptom: either an expensive, mostly idle memory configuration or constant spilling. Fix: size for decompressed concurrent working sets, hash tables, sorts, cache and operating-system headroom.

Ignoring file and partition shape

Symptom: many tiny files create slow planning, or broad partitions force full scans. Fix: compact files, collect statistics and choose partition keys from observed query predicates.

Scaling workers without scaling the fabric

Symptom: adding nodes does not reduce runtime because shuffle and remote reads saturate the network. Fix: measure aggregate traffic, rebalance partitions and upgrade the interconnect or storage path before adding more workers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping data-quality and clock controls

Symptom: results differ between runs or appear to show impossible market events. Fix: preserve source sequence and event time, synchronize clocks, detect gaps and duplicates, and make corrections traceable.

What to validate before committing capital

No cited source provides a directly comparable benchmark for particular market-data databases, CPUs, GPUs or cloud instances, and a complete bill of materials with current prices is not established. Run your own acceptance test with representative feeds, symbols, joins and query windows. Require the test to report throughput, p95 or p99 latency where relevant, peak RAM, spill bytes, storage and network utilization, failure recovery and cost per processed partition. The result—not a headline core count or accelerator specification—should determine the final platform.
