Is there an official Halo game for Nintendo 64?

The first three entries are the non-negotiable project requirements documented in the report. Controllers are ordinary N64 input hardware rather than a special Halo-branded accessory. The number you need depends on how many people will play locally.

The Nintendo 64 and its Expansion Pak
Use an actual N64 console
The project is described as running on real Nintendo 64 hardware. That means an N64 console with its normal power and display connections is the base system; an emulator, modern re-release or another Nintendo console is not the hardware described by the project report. If your goal is the reported fan-project experience, start with a functioning original N64 and verify that it can boot other software before troubleshooting Halo-64.
Install the 8MB Expansion Pak
The 8MB Expansion Pak is a required component, not an optional performance upgrade. Search listings using “Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pak” or “N64 Expansion Pak,” and check that a listing actually identifies the 8MB memory unit rather than a generic cartridge accessory.
In practical terms, the Pak replaces the N64’s standard memory cover at the top of the console. Follow the accessory’s own installation instructions and switch the console off before removing or inserting it. Once installed, make sure it is seated firmly; an improperly seated memory module can make a system appear not to start, which can be mistaken for a problem with the fan project.

The available report does not state a substitute memory size, a compatible third-party model, or a way to run the project without the Pak. Do not assume that extra controller memory, a Rumble Pak or a standard N64 Jumper Pak satisfies this requirement.
Why an original Xbox copy is part of the setup
The unusual part of the requirement list is the original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved. Windows Central’s report says a copy of the original Xbox version is needed to get Halo-64 working. It is source software for the fan project, not a cartridge that plugs into the N64.
Plan on owning a legitimate original Xbox copy before assembling the rest of the setup. The report does not specify the exact data-transfer method, disc image format, adapter or utility used by a particular build, so those details must come from the instructions for the specific Halo-64 release you intend to use. Do not buy an “N64 Halo cartridge” on the assumption that it replaces the Xbox source disc; the documented requirement is the original Xbox game.

This cross-platform dependency also explains why the project should not be treated like a conventional N64 game purchase. The console supplies the runtime environment, the Expansion Pak supplies required memory, and the Xbox game supplies the source material identified by the project report.

Controllers for solo and split-screen play
One controller for a single player
For a solo test or a match against bots, use a normal Nintendo 64 controller connected to the console. The cited report does not require a particular controller revision or a special adapter. Confirm that the stick, buttons and trigger work in another N64 game before diagnosing a project-specific input issue.
Up to four controllers for local multiplayer
Halo-64 supports up to four-player split-screen. Therefore, a four-player session needs four working N64 controllers, one in each controller port. Two- and three-player games need the corresponding number of controllers. A multitap is not identified as necessary in the available documentation.

Split-screen is local multiplayer on one console. It is different from online play, and the report does not document online networking hardware or a network mode. If you are buying accessories specifically for multiplayer, prioritize a complete set of reliable controllers rather than a network adapter.
Rumble Pak: useful enhancement, not a prerequisite
The project supports Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak feedback. A Rumble Pak fits in the controller’s accessory slot and can add physical feedback during play, but the report labels it as supported rather than required. You can therefore assemble a working setup without one and add it later.

The missing campaign is the biggest expectation-setting point. Buying the Expansion Pak and finding an Xbox copy does not turn the N64 into a cartridge version of the complete original game. The documented feature set is centered on multiplayer, bots and Firefight, with no Halo: Combat Evolved campaign.
A sensible setup sequence
- Confirm the platform you are building. Decide that you want the unofficial Halo-64 project on real N64 hardware, rather than an official Nintendo release. There is no official N64 cartridge to locate.
- Prepare a working Nintendo 64. Connect the console to a compatible display and verify basic operation with known-good N64 software. This separates a console, power or display fault from a project fault.
- Install the 8MB Expansion Pak. Power the console down, fit the required Pak according to its instructions, and ensure it is seated correctly before booting.
- Secure the original Xbox copy. Use an original copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, as specified by the project report. Keep the disc and any resulting project files together and follow the exact instructions for the particular fan-project build.
- Connect controllers. Attach one standard N64 controller for each participant. For four-player split-screen, populate all four controller ports with tested controllers.
- Add Rumble Paks if wanted. Insert them into the controllers that should provide vibration. Skip this step if you only need the minimum working setup.
- Follow the release-specific launch instructions. The available report establishes the hardware and source-game requirements but does not prescribe a universal menu path, cartridge format or transfer tool. Use the documentation bundled with the build you have chosen rather than assuming that every release starts the same way.

The N64 does not boot the project
- Turn the console off and reseat the 8MB Expansion Pak.
