Turning off notifications for an app changes how its alerts appear; it is not the same as switching on Do Not Disturb. A device-wide mode can silence calls and alerts too, but configured exceptions may still get through. Disabling alerts alone does not establish whether a particular app will receive or process messages, so check the app’s own guidance if delivery matters.
Notifications off: what changes and what does not
An app’s notification setting controls alerts from that app, and may also let you choose which categories alert, whether they are silent, and whether they appear on the lock screen. Those choices govern presentation—not necessarily whether the app receives incoming information.

Do Not Disturb and similar device-wide modes have a broader scope: they filter interruptions across the phone. Their rules can include exceptions for selected people, apps, calls, or repeat callers. The exact choices depend on the operating system, version, and device.
- One app or category: changes alerts from that app or part of it.
- Device-wide mode: applies configured interruption filters across the device.
- Message delivery: cannot be inferred just from an alert setting; behavior may differ by app.
Do calls and messages still come through?
Turning off notifications for a messaging app does not, by itself, tell you whether messages are delivered, queued, or processed. The official Android and Apple setting guides explain alert and interruption controls, but do not establish delivery behavior for every messaging app. Check the app’s documentation for a definitive answer about its messages.

For calls, distinguish app notifications from a device-wide mode. Apple says Do Not Disturb silences calls, alerts, and notifications, while allowing users to configure people and apps. Android’s Do Not Disturb and Modes filters can also govern calls and messages, with options such as allowing repeat callers in supported configurations. These are configurable filters, not a guarantee that every call will be blocked.
Turn off notifications for one app
On Android
Google’s Android Help describes controls for switching off an app’s notifications, choosing notification categories, selecting alerting or silent behavior on supported devices, and changing lock-screen presentation. Settings vary by device, so the exact menu labels and path may differ by manufacturer and Android version. See Google’s Android notification instructions.

On iPhone or iPad
Use the device’s notification settings to manage alerts from an individual app. The Apple guidance cited here covers Do Not Disturb and Focus rather than providing an app-by-app notification path; for current app controls, check the settings and help available on your iOS or iPadOS release.
Use Do Not Disturb or Focus to silence broader interruptions
iPhone and iPad
Apple describes Do Not Disturb as a Focus option in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and later that silences calls, alerts, and notifications. Turn it on or off from Control Center, or configure it under Focus settings. Review allowed people and apps, and check any schedule before relying on it to silence interruptions. Apple also documents that a linked Lock Screen can turn on a Focus and that Share Across Devices can show Do Not Disturb status on other Apple devices. Features and menus may vary by release. Android
Android separates app notification controls from Do Not Disturb and other Modes. Check the mode’s notification filters for calls, messages, and other exceptions, including repeat callers if that option is available on your device. Google notes that some Modes instructions apply only to Android 14 or later and that settings vary across devices. See Google’s Android Modes and Do Not Disturb instructions.

Check whether a schedule or mode is activating automatically. On Apple devices, Focus schedules can switch a mode on; linked Lock Screens and Share Across Devices can also affect which devices show Do Not Disturb status. On Android, review the active Mode and its schedule or filters, if available on your device.

Before relying on a setting
- Confirm whether you changed one app’s notifications or enabled a device-wide mode.
- Review allowed people, apps, call categories, and repeat-caller exceptions.
- Check whether alerts are silent, hidden from the lock screen, or still visible elsewhere on the device.
- Look for schedules and linked-device behavior that may activate a mode automatically.
- For message delivery or background processing, consult the specific messaging app’s documentation rather than assuming an alert setting blocks or guarantees delivery.
