Mild injuries may improve within days; severe injuries can take weeks or months. Start with protection and gentle movement as pain allows, progress exercise gradually, and seek medical advice for severe, worsening or slow-to-improve symptoms.
What a hamstring strain can feel like
A hamstring strain can cause sudden pain at the back of the thigh during activity, tenderness, pain when the muscle is stretched or used, and reduced function. Swelling or bruising may appear, and a severe injury can involve a popping or snapping sensation and difficulty standing or walking. These symptoms are general patterns, not a way to diagnose the injury at home. The NHS describes hamstring injury symptoms and care; a 2022 clinical practice guideline also outlines common presentation patterns.

What to do in the first two to three days
For a mild or moderate injury, NHS guidance recommends PRICE during the first two to three days: protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. Wrap ice in a towel and apply it for up to 20 minutes every two to three hours. Compression should feel snug, not tight, and elevate the leg when practical. Avoid heat, massage and alcohol during the first three days. Once pain no longer stops movement, gently keep the leg moving to limit stiffness. This self-care advice is not a substitute for assessment of a severe injury or one causing significant difficulty walking.
How long does a hamstring strain take to heal?
There is no dependable universal return date. The NHS says mild hamstring injuries usually improve in a few days, while severe injuries can take weeks or months. A complete tear may require surgery and several months of recovery afterward. The course depends on the injury and functional recovery, so an individual clinician is best placed to advise on a particular case.

General NHS information for sprains and strains says many feel better after two weeks and advises avoiding strenuous exercise such as running for up to eight weeks, with severe cases sometimes taking months. Those are broad figures for sprains and strains, not a specific forecast for a hamstring injury; they should not be used as a personal return-to-running schedule.
Hamstring strain recovery exercises and progression
Rehabilitation should be progressive and tailored to symptoms, capacity and activity demands. A clinical practice guideline recommends a comprehensive functional exercise program that includes eccentric training, alongside progressive strengthening, stretching and functional work. The right starting point and exercise dose vary; the guideline does not prescribe one home routine for everyone.

Early rehabilitation
Early work is generally intended to restore comfortable movement and control while avoiding excessive loading of healing tissue. A 2018 clinical review describes an initial phase focused on reducing pain and swelling and restoring slower neuromuscular control, while protecting healing fibers from excessive lengthening. The 2023 London International Consensus similarly advises avoiding high strain loads and rates early on. Pain, strength and the response to previous loading help guide progression.

Building strength and function
As capacity improves, rehabilitation can progress to more challenging strengthening and functional movement. The 2018 review’s proposed framework introduces eccentric resistance training in this middle phase. Eccentric work involves controlling a muscle as it lengthens; it should be introduced at an appropriate level rather than treated as a mandatory exercise to start immediately.

Preparing to run and return to sport
Later rehabilitation can include running and sprinting matched to the demands of the person’s sport or activity. The 2023 international consensus recommends individualizing rehabilitation to the athlete, sporting demands, involved muscle, and injury type and severity. Experts did not establish a universal exercise order, dosage, flexibility target or strength benchmark. A football-specific 2017 consensus also considers medical clearance, pain on palpation, strength, flexibility, functional and field testing, and psychological readiness; those are athlete-focused criteria, not a self-test for everyone.
Do not return to sport just because a certain number of days has passed or pain has eased. A clinician can weigh symptoms, strength and response to loading before deciding whether running or sport-specific work is appropriate. Prior hamstring strain is a reinjury risk factor; the guideline identifies factors such as strength, initial pain, time until pain-free walking and tenderness area as relevant to estimating return-to-play time, not as a formula that guarantees a date.

When should I seek medical advice?
In the UK, contact NHS 111 for urgent advice if pain is very severe or worsening, swelling or bruising is substantial or getting worse, standing or walking hurts, the leg is very stiff or difficult to move, self-treatment is not helping, or you have a high temperature or feel shivery. Outside the UK, use your local urgent-care or health-advice service. Seek assessment rather than relying on home exercises when symptoms suggest a severe injury.

Quick Recap

- Tights vs Sleeves: Get targeted relief for problematic areas rather than an all-over "squeeze" of the entire leg! This is extremely helpful for pulled hamstrings and overworked quadriceps to promote healthy blood flow, ensure optimized performance and minimize the risk of injury.
- Enhances performance by promoting blood flow, reducing muscle vibrations, and decreasing fatigue while increasing structural support and combatting the annoying effects of DOMS. Compression is also beneficial for healing damaged or torn muscles after sudden injuries.
- Wearing the BODYPROX thigh sleeves during heavy lifts can help with mind and body connection, helping to "engage" your muscles during training sessions. They ensure your muscles are getting the oxygen they need to function properly while simultaneously preventing lactic acid build-up in your muscles.
- Great to wear on and off the track! Thigh compression sleeves fit well under clothing so you can prevent and protect against further injury while at work or around the house.
- Made with a knitted blend of Nylon and Latex with 10% Spandex for extreme stretch that releases excess body heat and prevents skin irritation. Silicone waves keep sleeves in place. Comes in 4 sizes: measure the circumference at the top of your thigh to find your best fit!
