Wi-Fi can still provide internet, and a separate active eSIM or second SIM may keep working. Removing the card does not, by itself, cancel your mobile plan.
What stops working when you remove a SIM?
A SIM connects a phone to a particular mobile line. Apple’s support guidance states, “Your iPhone needs a physical SIM or an eSIM to connect to a cellular network.” The same basic distinction applies: removing the card removes access to the line associated with that card, not necessarily every way the phone can connect.

Calls and carrier text messages
If the removed SIM was the only active SIM for your number, that phone loses the line’s cellular network access. Carrier voice calls and SMS associated with that line will not be available through the removed SIM. What callers hear, whether messages are delivered later, and how voicemail or call forwarding behaves depend on the carrier and account settings; do not assume a particular outcome.

Mobile data
Mobile data provided by the removed line stops. If the phone has Wi-Fi access, internet-based services can still connect over Wi-Fi. Apple explains that when cellular data is off, internet services use Wi-Fi only: Apple’s cellular data guidance.

Apps, internet calls and messaging
Apps that use the internet may continue to work over Wi-Fi, including some messaging and calling services. Their behavior varies by app and account configuration. Carrier SMS and internet-based messaging are different services, so losing the SIM’s SMS access does not automatically mean every messaging app stops working.
Can you still use your phone without a SIM?
Yes, for tasks that do not require the removed cellular line. With Wi-Fi, you can use internet services and apps that support Wi-Fi connections. Offline features and content already on the device may also remain available. Without Wi-Fi or another active cellular line, internet access through the removed SIM is unavailable.

A second active SIM or eSIM can therefore keep service available even after you remove one physical card.

Does removing a SIM cancel your plan?
Removing the card is not the same as canceling the mobile plan. It changes whether that phone can use the physical SIM’s line; it does not establish that the carrier has ended the account or stopped billing. Contact your carrier to confirm account status, billing, voicemail, and any cancellation or replacement procedure. Apple makes a similar distinction for eSIMs: deleting an eSIM is not the same as asking the carrier to cancel the plan. See Apple’s eSIM setup and management guidance.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
What changes if the phone uses an eSIM or more than one line?
A physical SIM and an eSIM are separate ways a phone can access a mobile line. Removing a physical card does not automatically remove a separately configured eSIM. Exact support depends on the phone model, operating system, carrier, and country or region; some devices sold in particular markets are eSIM-only. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and your carrier’s compatibility information before relying on a particular setup.
On supported devices, a second active line may continue to provide cellular service. If you convert a physical SIM to an eSIM, however, the old physical card may stop working. Google’s Pixel instructions say the physical SIM used for a completed conversion no longer works; contact the carrier if you later need a physical SIM again: Google Pixel’s physical-SIM-to-eSIM instructions.

How to remove and replace a SIM safely
- Check your phone’s instructions and use the SIM tray supplied for that device. Apple’s directions are for supported iPhone models; tray design and SIM support vary: Apple’s SIM removal instructions.
- Insert a SIM-eject tool or a straightened paper clip into the tray’s eject hole, then push toward the phone to release the tray. Do not force it.
- Lift the SIM out. If you are replacing it, align the card’s notch with the tray so it sits in the intended orientation.
- If the tray will not eject easily, stop and contact the network provider or an Apple Store rather than applying more force.
- For a lost, damaged or unsupported SIM, ask your carrier about an activated replacement or eSIM and confirm compatibility with your exact phone. Google’s Pixel guidance also directs users to the carrier for SIM availability or support: Google Pixel SIM and eSIM setup guidance.
What to know about a SIM PIN
If SIM PIN protection is enabled, removing the SIM or restarting the phone can lock that SIM until its PIN is entered. Do not guess: Apple warns that incorrect attempts can permanently lock the SIM. Follow the carrier’s instructions if you do not know the PIN or the SIM becomes locked: Apple’s SIM PIN guidance.
