Choose lost mode first if you are still trying to recover the phone and want to preserve its contents. Erase it when protecting the data matters more than keeping it available for recovery—but know that the result differs on iPhone and Android.
Lost mode and remote erase do different things

What happens on an iPhone or iPad
Marking it as lost locks it and displays your message
Apple Lost Mode locks the device with its passcode and lets you show a custom message and phone number. Apple says the message continues to display even after the device is erased. Apple recommends marking a misplaced or potentially stolen device as lost promptly. Apple’s Activation Lock guidance explains how Find My protects the device.

Erasing it does not remove Activation Lock
When Find My is set up, Activation Lock turns on automatically. Apple links the device to the Apple Account on its activation servers. The account password is required to turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. After a remote erase, Activation Lock remains, deterring someone else from reactivating the device without the owner’s account password. It is an anti-reactivation protection, not a guarantee that the device will be recovered.

What happens on Android with Google Find Hub
Mark as lost locks the phone
Google Find Hub can lock an Android phone using its PIN, pattern, or password and show a contact message on the lock screen. Use the official Find Hub service while signed in to the Google Account associated with the phone. Google says Find Hub is automatically turned on when a Google Account is added to an Android device. Google’s instructions for finding, securing, or erasing an Android device describe the available actions.
Factory reset deletes data, with two important limits
Google says a factory reset permanently deletes data on the device, but it may not delete data on an SD card. After the reset, the phone is no longer available in Find Hub. If you later recover it, you need the Google Account password to use the phone again.

When a remote action can reach the phone
For Google to secure or erase an Android phone, Google lists these requirements:

- The phone has power and is connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- It is signed in to a Google Account.
- Find Hub is turned on.
- The device is visible on Google Play.
If those conditions are not met, do not assume the phone can receive the command. Google’s guidance specifies the prerequisites but does not promise when an unavailable phone will carry out an action. Apple’s cited guidance describes the protections associated with Find My and Activation Lock; it does not establish every condition or timing for a remote action.

How to decide whether to erase
- Still trying to recover the phone? Mark it as lost first. This locks the screen and offers a way for someone to contact you without taking the separate step of deleting device data.
- Prioritizing data protection over recovery? Consider remote erase, understanding that it deletes data and may reduce your ability to locate the device. On Android, Google explicitly says the reset phone will no longer appear in Find Hub.
- Concerned that someone will reuse the phone? Account protections remain relevant after erasure: Apple’s Activation Lock remains on a Find My device, and Android requires the associated Google Account password to use the erased phone again.
