Before wearing camera- and microphone-equipped smart glasses, review voice controls, indicator lights, alerts, capture and sharing behavior, and software updates. Ray-Ban Meta provides a documented example, but settings and menu names vary by brand, generation, app version, and region—and no single toggle makes recording or AI processing private.
1. Review voice control and follow-up listening
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Ray-Ban’s support FAQ says voice control is opt-in and can be managed in the Meta AI app at Settings > Voice > Voice Control. Check the setting before wearing the glasses; do not assume voice control is off simply because you have not used a voice command.

Decide whether to enable follow-up requests
In Hey Meta preferences, the FAQ describes Respond without “Hey Meta”. When enabled, the microphone remains on briefly after a request so you can speak again without repeating the wake phrase. If you speak during that interval, audio is recorded and processed. Ray-Ban says you can end a conversation by saying “Stop” or “Cancel.” This describes a time-limited follow-up feature; it does not establish that all microphone use has ended in every mode.

If you do not want that follow-up window, leave the feature off. If you want to avoid voice control altogether, turn off Voice Control using the app setting above. Other brands may use different names or offer different controls.

2. Know what each light indicates
Ray-Ban’s FAQ distinguishes two LEDs: the front-facing capture LED signals taking a photo or recording video, while the inward-facing notification LED communicates device states. The notification LED’s brightness can be set to Automatic, Low, Medium, or High. These are separate indicators with different purposes.
Meta’s July 2026 explanation says the capture LED blinks for content captured for the wearer’s gallery and has no off switch. It is not a general indication that every data-processing action is visible to people nearby. Respect the indicator; do not cover or modify it. Meta says second-generation glasses disable the camera if the capture LED is blocked. Its July 2026 page described further detection of physical tampering or destruction as an update underway, not a universal capability already established for every model or firmware version.

3. Check alerts and system sounds
Ray-Ban says System Alerts can be managed in the Meta AI app, including push notifications and system sounds. You can adjust system-sound volume, but the FAQ says those sounds cannot be turned off. Review the alert settings and choose a comfortable volume before use; do not treat muting or lowering sounds as disabling recording or voice features.
4. Separate capture, import, sharing, and AI use
Meta describes photos and videos captured for the gallery as stored on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. Importing is distinct from sharing: Meta says sharing captured media is a separate choice. Asking Meta AI to use content is another distinct action. Meta’s description is a product explanation, not an independent privacy audit or a complete account of every form of processing.

Meta answers who can see gallery photos and videos with: “You, and only you — unless you choose to share them.” That statement concerns gallery photos and videos within the scope described on Meta’s page; it should not be read as proof that all data associated with the glasses stays on-device or that no other processing occurs. The available official information does not establish a complete current inventory of retention, model-improvement, or regional privacy controls. Do not assume a voice or AI setting opts you out of all data use or deletes cloud-side data.
5. Check for updates before wearing the glasses
Ray-Ban documents this update route in the Meta AI app: Settings > Your glasses > Glasses update. Check for available updates before first use, since controls and behavior can differ by generation and software version. Follow the app’s instructions to complete any update.

6. Reset before selling or gifting
Before transferring Ray-Ban Meta glasses to someone else, perform a factory reset. Ray-Ban says a factory reset permanently erases captures and associations with the Meta account. Use the reset process in the official instructions for your model, and confirm it has completed before handing the glasses over.

Pre-wear checklist
- Review Voice Control and decide whether to enable “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’.”
- Identify the front capture LED and inward notification LED; do not obstruct the capture indicator.
- Set System Alerts and system-sound volume to your preference, knowing sounds cannot be fully turned off according to Ray-Ban’s FAQ.
- Understand when gallery media is imported, shared, or used with Meta AI rather than treating those actions as interchangeable.
- Check for a software update in the app before use.
- If giving the glasses away or selling them, factory reset them first.
