How to Monitor Your Credit and Financial Accounts for Identity Theft

Monitor your credit reports and your financial accounts separately: credit alerts can flag changes to your credit file, but they will not tell you that someone withdrew money from your bank account or used your Social Security number to file a tax return. Check your reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, review bank and card activity directly, and use official channels to act quickly on anything unfamiliar.

Check your credit reports at all three bureaus

Use AnnualCreditReport.com to access free weekly credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, as recommended by IdentityTheft.gov. Review each report yourself; a report check can reveal unfamiliar activity, but it does not monitor your accounts between checks.

  • Look for credit cards, loans, or other accounts you did not open.
  • Check for hard inquiries from lenders you do not recognize.
  • Review addresses and other personal details for changes you did not make.

If you spot an unfamiliar account or inquiry, treat it as a reason to investigate promptly. Contact the company named on the report using contact information from its official website, and report suspected identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.

Monitor bank, card, and investment accounts directly

Credit-report monitoring is not a substitute for checking existing financial accounts. Sign in through your institution’s official app or website and review transactions, recent activity, and account changes. If available, enable transaction and login notifications so you can notice activity sooner.

Contact the affected institution’s fraud department as soon as you see a suspicious transaction or change. Ask whether it should close or freeze the affected account, and how to dispute the activity. Change the affected account’s password and PIN; if you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Enable stronger sign-in protections where offered.

For unauthorized debits made using a debit-card number, IdentityTheft.gov says you are not responsible if you report the problem within 60 days after the statement showing the debits. That specific timeframe should not be assumed to apply to every transaction or payment method; contact your institution promptly and ask about the rules for your situation.

What monitoring services do—and do not—cover

Credit monitoring services generally send alerts about changes to credit files, sometimes by email, text, or phone. Coverage varies, so before enrolling, check which bureaus are included, how often the service checks reports, whether score access is included, and what it costs. An alert is a prompt to review and respond, not a guarantee that every fraudulent action will be detected.

The FTC notes that credit monitoring does not alert you when someone withdraws money from a bank account or uses your Social Security number to file a tax return. Identity monitoring may search additional databases, but the sources and protections differ by service. Before paying, check covered data sources, recovery assistance, trial and cancellation terms, recurring fees, and any limits on insurance.

The CFPB describes identity-monitoring prices ranging from a few dollars a month to more than $15 per month. That is a general published range, not a current quote for any particular service. Self-checking official credit reports and reviewing your accounts directly are useful habits whether or not you pay for monitoring.

Choose a freeze or fraud alert when new-credit fraud is a concern

Option What it does What to know
Credit report self-check Lets you inspect your reports for accounts, inquiries, and personal details you do not recognize. Free weekly reports are available through AnnualCreditReport.com; you must review them yourself.
Credit monitoring Can notify you about changes to covered credit files. Check bureau coverage, checking frequency, alert methods, score access, and fees. It does not monitor all financial activity.
Identity monitoring May search databases beyond credit files and alert you to other uses of personal information. Coverage and cost vary. Review data sources, recovery assistance, trial terms, cancellation, and insurance limits before paying.
Credit freeze Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, which can help prevent many new accounts from being opened. Free; request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You may need to lift it when applying for credit.
Fraud alert Asks creditors to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening credit. Free. An initial alert lasts one year and can be requested through one bureau, which must notify the other two. Identity-theft victims can request an extended alert lasting seven years through the FTC process.

A freeze and a fraud alert are different protections. A freeze restricts access to your file; a fraud alert asks creditors to verify identity. The CFPB says, “Security freezes do not impact your credit scores in any way whatsoever.” A freeze may add a step when you apply for credit, so plan to lift it when needed.

What to do if you find an account you did not open

  1. Contact the company through a trusted channel. Use the phone number on a statement or the company’s official website—not a number or link in an unexpected message. Ask for the fraud department, account protection, and the company’s dispute process.
  2. Secure affected accounts. Ask the institution whether it should close or freeze the account. Change its password and PIN, update any reused password on other services, and turn on stronger sign-in protections where available.
  3. Check all three credit reports. Look for other unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses, or personal details. Consider placing a fraud alert or a freeze; a freeze must be requested separately from each nationwide bureau.
  4. Report the identity theft. File at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC provides an Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Keep a copy and follow the plan’s instructions for disputing or blocking fraudulent credit-file information.
  5. Watch for follow-on contact. Do not give passwords, verification codes, or money to someone who contacts you unexpectedly claiming to be from a bank or government agency. Find contact details independently on an official website or trusted statement.

Build a monitoring routine you can maintain

  • Review bank, card, and investment transactions and account changes regularly; turn on available transaction and login alerts.
  • Check your credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com and investigate unfamiliar entries.
  • Use a freeze if you want to restrict prospective creditors’ access to your reports, and keep in mind that applications for credit may require lifting it.
  • Respond quickly to suspicious activity by contacting the affected institution directly and using IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps.

Scammers sometimes impersonate financial institutions and government agencies. If an unexpected call, text, or email says there is a problem, do not rely on its links or contact details; reach the organization using information you obtain independently.
