A month-end close that relies on scripts understood by just one person has a continuity risk—but authorship alone does not prove a control failure, financial error, or misconduct. The practical test is whether someone else can safely review, run, and recover the process using documented steps and appropriate access.
What does “one author” actually tell you?
It tells you who may have written code, not necessarily who maintains it, runs it in production, approves its results, or is accountable for the accounting outcome. Those roles can belong to different people. Repository history can identify contributors, but it cannot by itself establish who has production credentials or whether another employee can take over.

Concentrated knowledge becomes a continuity concern when the sequence, dependencies, and recovery steps are undocumented and a trained colleague cannot complete the work without the author. A practitioner account describes close work spread across one person’s memory, spreadsheets, email, and files; it recommends writing the steps down and having someone else dry-run them. That is useful operational advice, not evidence of how common the problem is or proof that a particular close failed. AccountingWEB
Before claiming that a process is controlled by one person, establish who writes, maintains, runs, reviews, approves, and can change each script. Also verify whether an error, delay, misstatement, or audit finding occurred; none follows automatically from single authorship.

Why can a single-person dependency matter at close?
Month-end work is time-bound and connected: a script may transform source data, prepare a reconciliation, or feed a later accounting step. If its author is unavailable, a colleague may not know which inputs are required, what a normal result looks like, or how to restore a prior working version. That can leave the team less able to respond to an exception or complete a review on schedule. It is a risk scenario, not evidence that a particular organization suffered harm.
The relevant internal-control principle is segregation of duties. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) states: “Key duties and responsibilities need to be divided or segregated among different people to reduce the risk of error or fraud.” The principle concerns dividing key responsibilities; it does not mean every small team must have enough staff for a separate person at every step. Where full separation is impractical, the organization should identify and document the independent review or other compensating control it actually uses. GAO internal-control standards

What controls make close scripts transferable and reviewable?
Document the process and its owner
Keep a runbook that names the business owner and technical maintainer, gives the ordered steps and expected completion points, and explains what to do when a step fails. Record where inputs come from, how missing or malformed inputs are handled, and how to identify a plausible output. A colleague’s dry run is more revealing than a document that has never been used without its author.

Limit production credentials and change permissions to people who need them. Keep code changes in a versioned repository where feasible, and record who changed what and when. Changes should receive authorization and review before production use. GAO systems-control guidance discusses separating software development, testing, and approval where feasible; small teams should describe the actual review and compensating controls rather than treating headcount as proof of failure. Test independently and retain evidence
Test changes on representative data before relying on them in a close. A reviewer should check relevant outputs against source records, ledger balances, reconciliations, or expected totals, and the team should retain the review evidence and sign-off. A script completing without an error message is not, on its own, evidence that its accounting output is correct.
Plan for absence and recovery
Specify who can take over if the usual operator is unavailable, how that person obtains authorized access, whom to contact when inputs or outputs look wrong, and how to restore the last known working version. Recovery instructions should be tested as part of the handover, not left as an assumption.

How can a close checklist help?
A checklist makes recurring work visible by assigning tasks, sequence, due dates, status, evidence, and review sign-off. Practitioner guidance supports this as a way to coordinate the close, but a checklist must represent the organization’s actual process and stay current. Spreadsheet status tracking can become stale as a team grows; that is a reason to review the method, not proof that a particular tool is necessary. Which standards apply—and to whom?
GAO’s Green Book is the official source for federal internal-control standards; GAO says federal executive branch agencies are required to establish controls in accordance with it. It is not automatically a rule for private companies. GAO Green Book overview
GAO’s current FISCAM page says its 2026 revision is effective for audits of federal entity financial statements beginning with fiscal year and calendar year 2026. For attestation and performance engagements, the revision is effective for engagements beginning on or after October 1, 2026. FISCAM is an audit methodology primarily scoped to federal financial audits; those dates do not make it a universal private-company requirement. GAO FISCAM
How to assess a real close process
- Map the roles: identify who writes, maintains, runs, approves, reviews, and can alter each script. Check repository history and access records rather than inferring all roles from the author’s name.
- Trace the inputs and outputs: document input sources, expected formats, exception handling, output destinations, and the accounting records or totals used for verification.
- Inspect the change path: determine whether changes are versioned, tested on representative data, reviewed, authorized, and logged before production use. Confirm that the prior working version can be recovered.
- Follow the evidence: establish which independent checks compare outputs with source records, the ledger, reconciliations, or expected totals, and who signs off.
- Run a handover test: have a trained colleague follow the written steps without coaching from the author. Record where the colleague gets stuck and update the instructions or controls.
- Test the fallback: confirm the documented backup operator, authorized access, escalation route, and recovery procedure for an unavailable author or failed run.
- Substantiate any claimed impact: use records and the organization’s response before reporting an error, delay, misstatement, or audit finding.
No source cited here verifies the particular person, organization, scripts, platform, or incident implied by the headline. The sound conclusion is narrower: single-person knowledge can threaten continuity when the process cannot be transferred, while claims of control failure or financial harm require separate evidence.
