For threaded black steel or iron gas piping, use a thread sealant labeled for the fuel in the line and compatible with both the pipe and fittings. The 2024 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) specifies that threaded-joint sealant must be nonhardening, resistant to the gas’s chemical constituents, and compatible with the materials being joined. RectorSeal T Plus 2 is one manufacturer-documented example for natural gas and iron pipe; it is not a universal choice for every fuel, fitting, or jurisdiction.
What the code requires of a gas-pipe sealant
The 2024 IFGC §403.8.3 says: “Threaded joints shall be made using a thread joint sealing material. Thread joint sealing materials shall be nonhardening and shall be resistant to the chemical constituents of the gases to be conducted through the piping. Thread joint sealing materials shall be compatible with the pipe and fitting materials on which the sealing materials are used.” Read the 2024 IFGC, Chapter 4.

That is a more useful selection test than a broad “gas-rated” claim: check the exact fuel, pipe material, fitting material, and current product instructions. The IFGC is a model code; your state or local jurisdiction may have adopted a different edition or amendments. Confirm the locally adopted fuel-gas code and, when needed, ask the authority having jurisdiction which requirements apply.

Sealant examples documented for black iron pipe
| Product | Manufacturer documentation cited | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RectorSeal T Plus 2 | RectorSeal describes it as a non-hardening thread sealant containing PTFE and synthetic fibers, recommends it for natural gas, and lists iron among applicable piping materials. See RectorSeal’s T Plus 2 information. | Confirm the current label covers the actual gas and fitting material and follow the package instructions. |
| Oatey Gripp | Oatey’s 2019 commercial catalog lists black iron as compatible and natural gas and propane among line contents. See the Oatey commercial catalog. | The cited listing is from a 2019 catalog. Verify current packaging, specifications, fuel compatibility, and fitting compatibility before relying on it. |
These are examples supported by manufacturer materials, not a performance ranking. The available information does not establish a winner in comparative tests under defined furnace-piping conditions. A product’s label also does not by itself establish acceptance under your local code or compatibility with every joint.
#1 Best Overall
- APPLICATION: RectorSeal No.5 is a non-hardening, slow-drying thread sealant made from special inert fillers dispersed in an oleoresinous base to facilitate its application to threaded pipe connections
- SOFT SETTING: Our pipe thread sealant is a soft-set, slow drying compound which seals, lubricates, and protects threaded pipe and fittings and will not dry out in the container
- POTABLE WATER SEALANT: RectorSeal No.5 pipe dope thread sealant lubricates and protects pipe threads; contains no metal; permits easy break out with no damage to threads
- PIPE COMPATIBILITY: For pipe made of galvanized steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, polyethylene, reinforced fiberglass, and pvc. do not use on abs or cpvc; for natural gas and water lines up to 2" and pressure up to 100 psi, the piping system may be placed into immediate service; other services are recommended 24 hours after application
- FOR THE TRADESMAN: RectorSeal is recognized as a leading provider of quality solutions for the professional trades serving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC/R), plumbing, electrical, and construction markets
Check the threads and joint materials too
Sealant cannot make a damaged or incorrect threaded joint safe. Under the 2024 IFGC, metallic pipe and fitting threads must be taper pipe threads conforming to ASME B1.20.1 (§403.8). Stripped, chipped, corroded, or otherwise damaged threads must not be used (§403.8.1). The code also says visible defects in pipe or fittings should not be repaired; defective parts must be replaced (§403.6). Have a qualified gas-piping professional assess questionable components rather than trying to compensate with more sealant.
Does the sealant need to be black?
No. “Black piping” describes the black steel or iron pipe commonly used for gas service; it does not mean the thread sealant must be black. The cited examples include white T Plus 2 and black-colored Gripp compound. Choose by listed fuel and material compatibility, required formulation, current instructions, and local code—not color.

How to make the selection
- Identify the fuel in the line, such as natural gas or propane, and the pipe and fitting materials.
- Check that the current sealant label and manufacturer instructions cover that fuel and both joint materials, and that the formulation meets the nonhardening criterion.
- Confirm the locally adopted fuel-gas code and any applicable jurisdictional requirements.
- Use only correctly threaded, undamaged components. Replace defective parts rather than attempting a sealant-based repair.
This guidance helps identify selection criteria; it does not establish a site-specific piping design or repair method. Gas piping work should follow local requirements and the appliance and product instructions.
