When an NBA team waives a player during training camp, it starts a waiver process—not an instant release. For 48 hours, another team can claim the player’s contract. If no team claims it, the contract terminates when that window expires. What the player is owed depends on the contract’s guarantees and terms; a G League move is possible, but never automatic.
What “waived” and “clears waivers” mean
Waived means the team has asked the league to put the player’s contract on waivers. Under the 2023 NBA-NBPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), teams have 48 hours to file a claim. The waiving team cannot withdraw its request, and a team cannot withdraw a claim once filed. If more than one team claims the player, CBA priority rules—based on standings and applicable tie-breakers—determine which team gets the contract. The CBA sets out the procedure in Appendix A, §§5.03–5.05.

If a team claims the contract, it takes on the contract rights and obligations. The player has not cleared waivers and has not become a free agent through an unclaimed waiver. If nobody claims the contract before the window closes, the contract terminates and the player can pursue another opportunity, subject to remaining obligations and applicable rules.

Possibly. Waiving a player does not, by itself, erase compensation protected by the contract or CBA. The amount, if any, depends on the specific agreement: its guarantees, the timing and reason for termination, and any later professional compensation can all matter. The CBA also provides a set-off framework for certain salary obligations when a player earns compensation from another professional team. Without the contract and transaction details, there is no reliable universal amount to quote.

Exhibit 9: a specific camp-contract provision
Exhibit 9 is not a rule for every training-camp contract. Under the CBA’s Exhibit 9 form, if the team terminates the contract before the first day of the regular season, compensation is eliminated apart from specified items. If the player is injured directly as a result of playing for the team and would otherwise have qualified for compensation, the form provides for a $15,000 payment upon termination. That figure is the stated amount in the 2023 CBA form, not a general waiver payment.
Exhibit 10: a conditional G League bonus
An Exhibit 10 attachment can provide a bonus if the player meets its conditions; it does not guarantee an NBA roster spot or payment just because the player is waived. In general, the contract must be terminated through waivers before the regular season; the player must sign with the G League by the affiliate-designation deadline, be initially assigned to the named affiliate, report there, and provide 60 consecutive days of service. The CBA includes exceptions, including certain injury circumstances. The executed contract states the bonus amount. Under the 2023 CBA, the maximum was $75,000 for the 2023–24 salary-cap year, with the maximum for later cap years adjusted by a salary-cap ratio.

An Exhibit 10 contract also gives the team an option to convert it to a Two-Way contract before the first day of the regular season, subject to roster eligibility rules. Exhibit 9 and Exhibit 10 serve different purposes, and a contract may include either or both.
Can the player go to the G League?
Yes, if the player signs a G League contract and meets the applicable rules. A team may designate up to four waived players as affiliate players. If a designated player signs in the G League, the player is allocated to that NBA team’s affiliate—but remains an NBA free agent available to all 30 teams. The designation itself is not an NBA assignment and does not require the player to sign with the G League. The G League’s affiliate-player explainer describes this route.

A player who is not designated may have other G League routes, but eligibility and acquisition rules depend on G League rules and the player’s history. Being waived does not automatically put anyone on a G League roster.
How camp cuts fit NBA roster limits
Teams reduce training-camp rosters to meet regular-season limits. For the 2025–26 season, the G League’s roster guide lists a maximum of 15 standard-contract players and three Two-Way players per NBA team. Those season-specific limits explain why a camp invitee may be waived, but they do not determine that player’s waiver claim, compensation, or next destination. The governing CBA, effective July 1, 2023, runs through the 2029–30 season, subject to an opt-out after 2028–29, according to the NBPA’s CBA page.
