Depending on the player’s role, it may also affect defensive calls, gap fits, pass-rush options and which personnel package a team uses. The result is not automatically a weaker run defense: it depends on the replacement, the remaining front, the opponent’s formation and how well the unit adjusts.
How do linebacker injuries affect NFL defensive schemes?
Linebackers often connect the defensive front to the rest of the defense. An inside linebacker may read offensive formations, communicate adjustments, fit a gap against the run and cover space against the pass. An outside linebacker in a 3-4 may instead be asked to rush the passer on one play and drop into coverage on another. Losing either player can matter, but for different reasons.

The tactical chain is usually about role and adjustment: a starter leaves, a reserve or a different package takes his place, and the defense must preserve its assignments against the offense it faces. A replacement who is unfamiliar with a communication responsibility can affect alignment or timing; a package change can alter the unit’s size and coverage profile. These are mechanisms to look for in a particular game, not guaranteed consequences of every injury.

An inside linebacker’s position can provide a central view of the formation and a chance to help shift the defense before the snap. In a Denver Broncos interview, linebackers coach Peter Hansen described that role: “In addition to covering the entire width of the field against the run and the pass, their central vantage point allows them to read the offense’s formation and shift the defense’s configuration on the fly.” He also described veteran Alex Singleton taking over communication when Josey Jewell was out. That is a Broncos example, not a rule that every team assigns calls the same way.

Gap fits, tackling and the front
Run defense depends on multiple players arriving in the right place. A linebacker must fit the assigned gap and make the tackle, while defensive linemen work to control blocks and keep blockers from reaching the second level. If the reserve is late, has a different assignment or cannot make the play, the fit can break down. If the front does not occupy blockers, a replacement linebacker may face an unblocked or cleanly climbing lineman. The cited sources describe these tactical relationships but do not measure how much any one injury changes rushing yards.
Pressure and edge responsibilities
In a 3-4 defense, linebackers can expand the possible rush combinations. Former Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers explained the flexibility this way: “In a 3-4, you know three linemen will be your rushers. That fourth rusher can come from one of the linebackers.” Losing a pass-rush specialist can therefore reduce available options or require another player to assume a different role. The effect depends on the replacement’s skills and the defense’s scheme, not just the injured player’s position label.
How do teams adjust when a starting linebacker is out?
There is no single replacement plan. A team can promote a reserve into the starter’s assignment, redistribute communication duties, or use a different personnel grouping. The choice depends on who is available and what the opponent is showing.

Keep the usual front and change the assignment
A reserve linebacker may take the injured player’s place while teammates retain the familiar front. Coaches may also shift who communicates, who fits a particular gap or who handles a coverage responsibility. This can preserve the overall structure, but the reserve’s experience and scheme fit matter. A veteran who knows the checks may ease one problem without necessarily reproducing the starter’s range, tackling or pass-rush ability.
Use nickel or big nickel
Traditional nickel commonly brings in a fifth defensive back for a linebacker. That can help against formations with more receiving threats, but it changes the defense’s body type and run-fit responsibilities. Big nickel uses an additional safety with the potential to cover and contribute against the run. Neither package is a like-for-like linebacker replacement: each trades among size, coverage and run-defense duties.
Rework the front or rush plan
A team may alter who rushes, who drops into coverage or how it presents its front. This is especially relevant when an injured linebacker has a hybrid role, such as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 who can both pressure and cover. NFL.com’s historical explanation of a 4-3-to-3-4 transition notes that changing fronts also requires suitable personnel and teaching; a team cannot assume that a new label alone solves a missing-player problem.

Do linebacker injuries hurt run defense?
They can, but an injury by itself does not establish that a team’s run defense will get worse. The effect depends on the injured player’s assignment, the backup’s ability, communication, the defensive line’s ability to occupy blockers, and the opponent’s blocking scheme. A team might compensate with a different package or front, while another may struggle to maintain gap integrity or make tackles.

The article describes Buffalo’s planned shift from a 4-3 base with nickel emphasis toward a 3-4 base, with outside linebackers expected to rush and cover. That is a team-specific scheme plan, not evidence about the effects of a linebacker injury across the league.
When evaluating a particular game, separate the injury from other causes. A poor run result may reflect missed tackles, blocking wins, an unfavorable formation, a changed assignment or several of these together. The available sources do not establish a league-wide yardage penalty attributable to linebacker absences.

What to check when comparing two linebacker absences
Two injuries at the same listed position can have different consequences. Compare the football job being lost, not simply the depth-chart label.
- Role and communication: Was the player responsible for relaying calls or adjusting alignments, or was his primary contribution a specialized rush or coverage assignment?
- Replacement fit: Does the reserve have experience in that scheme and the range or strength the assignment demands?
- Package choice: Did the defense stay in its usual front, substitute a nickel or big-nickel grouping, or change its rush plan?
- Defensive-line play: Were linemen controlling blocks and protecting the second level, or were blockers reaching the replacement cleanly?
- Opponent and play design: What personnel, formation and run concepts did the offense use?
These factors help explain what to inspect in game film or coach comments. They do not, on their own, prove that an injury caused a particular statistical outcome.
What the available injury figures do—and do not—show
A peer-reviewed 2021 study examined pectoralis major injuries in 245 NFL players across the 1998–1999 through 2019–2020 seasons. It recorded 258 injuries; 167 were in defensive players, and linebackers accounted for 73 of those 167 defensive injuries (43.7%). That percentage is the share of defensive pectoralis injuries in the study attributed to linebackers. It is not the share of all linebacker injuries that involve the pectoralis, and the study does not estimate the effect of linebacker absences on team run defense.
Best Value
Historical examples can illustrate why an unusual player is hard to replace, but they do not supply a general causal estimate. NFL.com’s report on Brian Urlacher’s season-ending wrist injury discussed Chicago’s replacement challenge and possible options; it was not a measured comparison of run-defense performance with and without him.
Why scheme changes make replacement harder
A front determines which players are expected to occupy blockers, rush, cover or fit gaps. Moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4 can alter those duties and requires personnel and teaching suited to the new structure. The Bills’ February 2026 plan is one current, team-specific illustration: it called for a 3-4 base and outside linebackers capable of rushing and coverage.
The same Bills article compared Denver’s 35.9% blitz rate with Buffalo’s 22.9% over the prior two seasons, placing Denver fourth and Buffalo 29th in blitz rate for that span. Those figures describe the teams’ pressure tendencies over that period; they are not injury statistics or measures of run defense. A separate NFL.com retrospective reported that Green Bay’s 1996 defense allowed 13.1 points per game and recorded 26 interceptions against 12 touchdown passes allowed. That historical description likewise does not establish a modern league norm or an injury effect.
