That is a commitment to retain the models’ underlying files—not to keep every retired model running or available to users. Continued access depends on a separate decision about whether and where to serve the model.
What model deprecation means—and what preservation does not mean
Deprecation is a provider’s announcement that support for a model is ending; retirement or shutdown is the later point when the model is no longer served on a particular platform. Providers’ terminology and schedules differ, so check the relevant provider and platform documentation rather than assuming the terms have one industry-wide meaning.

Anthropic’s preservation commitment concerns model weights: the files that encode a model’s learned parameters. Keeping those files may leave open a way to restore a model later, but does not mean Anthropic is currently hosting it, accepting requests for it, or guaranteeing future access. Serving a model has ongoing costs, and Anthropic says the cost scales roughly linearly with the number of models it serves.

Anthropic states: “As an initial step in this direction, we are committing to preserving the weights of all publicly released models, and all models that are deployed for significant internal use moving forward for, at minimum, the lifetime of Anthropic as a company.” The statement appears in Anthropic’s article on model deprecation and preservation; the page does not name an individual speaker.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
The stated scope covers all publicly released models and models deployed for significant internal use going forward. The minimum duration is the lifetime of the company—not perpetual preservation after Anthropic ceases to exist. Anthropic says retaining weights means it is not irreversibly closing the possibility of making past models available again. It describes broader public access to retired models as something it is exploring, not as a guarantee for every model.
How much notice providers give before retiring models
Notice periods are provider policies, not a universal industry rule or a statement of legal requirements. They can also vary by model type and platform.

| Provider or platform | What its documentation says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | At least 60 days’ notice before retiring publicly released models. Its model lifecycle documentation labels models active, legacy, deprecated, or retired; lists dates and recommended replacements; and says it notifies customers with active deployments. | Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud may set their own schedules for partner-operated deployments, so Anthropic’s dates may not govern those endpoints. See Anthropic’s model deprecations documentation. |
| OpenAI | Normally at least six months’ notice for generally available models and at least three months for specialized variants. Its API deprecations page lists notices, shutdown dates, and replacements. | Safety or compliance concerns can require faster retirement. ChatGPT product changes are distinct from API changes. See OpenAI’s API deprecations documentation and ChatGPT model release notes. |
| Google Gemini API | Google distinguishes deprecation, when it announces support is ending, from shutdown, when the model is turned off and its endpoint is unavailable. | This terminology and schedule apply to the Gemini API; they should not be assumed to define other providers’ processes. See Google’s Gemini API deprecations documentation. |
Why the platform matters as much as the model name
A model can be offered through a consumer app, a provider’s native API, or a cloud partner. Those are separate access points with potentially different retirement dates and conditions. A model disappearing from an app does not, by itself, establish that its API has shut down; likewise, a provider’s published API schedule may not control an endpoint operated by a cloud partner.
When a model is part of an application or workflow, identify the exact surface and endpoint you use, then check that platform’s lifecycle notice. Record the announced shutdown date and any named replacement for that specific deployment.

Claude Opus 3: retirement with limited continued access
Anthropic says Claude Opus 3 completed its full retirement process on January 5, 2026, making it the first model to do so under the commitments described in the company’s article. After formal retirement, Anthropic kept Opus 3 available to paid claude.ai users and offered API access by request. The company characterized these arrangements as early and experimental, so they illustrate one possible outcome—not a standing promise for other retired models. See Anthropic’s Opus 3 retirement update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess a model dependency before it is retired
- Separate storage from service. A statement that weights are retained does not confirm that an endpoint remains available.
- Check the exact product surface. Confirm whether your use is through a consumer app, native API, or cloud partner, and read that platform’s own schedule.
- Read the date and notice terms for the specific model. Provider policies differ, and exceptions may apply.
- Look for a named replacement. A replacement is useful information, but it does not establish that it behaves identically or that migration is automatic.
- Do not treat experimental access as guaranteed. Post-retirement availability may be limited to certain users or available only by request.
The cited provider materials establish these policies and examples; they do not establish a cross-industry legal requirement to preserve model weights.
