Tencent vs. Alibaba Cloud IPs: What the 6× Blacklist Finding Actually Means

A 30-IP-per-provider snapshot found more blocklist hits in Tencent’s sample than Alibaba’s, but it does not predict the reputation of an individual assigned address.

In a September 2026 sample, 6 of 30 Tencent Cloud IP addresses and 1 of 30 Alibaba Cloud addresses appeared on at least one of eight checked DNS-based blocklists. That is a six-to-one ratio between the sample rates—20% versus about 3.3%—not proof that any Tencent address is six times more likely to be listed across either provider’s full network. The same audit found nearly universal missing reverse-DNS records in both samples, but other metadata fields differed.

What the six-to-one result measures

One IP’s report, dated October 2, 2026, describes a September snapshot of 360 addresses: 30 sampled from announced prefixes for each of 12 providers using a fixed seed. It checked reverse-DNS PTR records, RDAP registrant data, and eight public DNS blocklists. The Tencent and Alibaba results were:

Provider Listed on at least one checked list Sample rate Missing PTR record
Tencent Cloud 6 of 30 20% 29 of 30
Alibaba Cloud 1 of 30 About 3.3% 30 of 30

The ratio comes from dividing 6/30 by 1/30. “Blacklisted” here means listed by at least one of the eight queried DNS blocklists; it does not mean that an address is universally blocked or that its owner has been found to abuse the network. The report’s author cautions: “30 IPs per provider is a sample, not a census.” One IP / PureIP’s audit and methodology

Why “the same broken IP metadata” is only partly accurate

Both samples had poor PTR coverage: 29 of 30 Tencent addresses and all 30 Alibaba addresses lacked a PTR record. But the RDAP fields were not alike, so the headline phrase should not be read as a claim that every metadata measure matched.

PTR, registrant, and abuse-contact information can help describe how network resources are documented and provisioned. Missing fields alone do not establish that an IP has been used maliciously, nor do they answer whether it is currently on a blocklist.

What the blocklist results do—and do not—show

The sample does not establish provider-wide odds

Thirty addresses per provider is a small sample of their address space. The report provides no confidence intervals or significance test, and its counts do not establish the probability that a randomly assigned address from either provider will be listed. They also cannot forecast the reputation of an IP assigned to a particular customer.

A listing is specific to a list and a point in time

The eight queried lists were all.s5h.net, dnsbl-1.uceprotect.net, bl.spamcop.net, dnsbl.dronebl.org, dnsbl.spfbl.net, hostkarma.junkemailfilter.com, psbl.surriel.com, and bl.blocklist.de. Across all 12 providers, the audit counted 47 listed IPs, 41 of them on dnsbl.spfbl.net; all six Tencent hits were on SPFBL. Its report notes that “Blocklists are dynamic.” A listing can change, and the result depends on which lists are queried and when. The report’s discussion of the provider results

The counts do not support a nationality-based explanation

In the same sample, the other ten providers combined had 40 listed addresses out of 300 (13.3%), while Tencent and Alibaba combined had 7 out of 60 (11.7%). These pooled figures cover small samples from different providers; they do not show that nationality or a particular provider policy caused the observed difference.

How to check an IP you may actually use

For a VPS purchase or mail deployment, assess the specific IP assigned to you rather than relying on a provider-wide sample. The practical test is the blocklist query itself; metadata fields are not a substitute. The report’s author makes the same distinction.

  1. Get the exact address. If you have not deployed the server yet, ask whether the provider can identify the address before purchase or offer a replacement if it has a relevant listing.
  2. Query the lists that matter to your use case. For mail, check the specific DNS-based lists used by your recipients or mail services. A result from one list is not equivalent to multiple independent listings.
  3. Record which list reports it and when. A bare “listed” result lacks the context needed to judge whether it affects your service.
  4. Recheck after assignment and before a critical launch. Because blocklist status changes, an earlier lookup is not a lasting guarantee.
  5. Ask for a replacement or choose another address if needed. Confirm the provider’s policy before relying on that option; the audit does not establish either provider’s replacement terms.

How to interpret a result

  • One listing on one automated list: investigate the list’s identity and relevance to your application before treating it as decisive.
  • Several relevant lists report the address: treat that as a stronger practical warning for an affected service, especially if you need reliable mail delivery.
  • No listing at lookup time: this only describes the lists queried at that time; it does not guarantee future status or acceptance by every service.
  • Missing PTR or RDAP details: follow up on configuration or contact information as appropriate, but do not interpret missing metadata as evidence of abuse.

Bottom line for choosing between the providers

The audit’s narrow result is clear: Tencent had six listed IPs in its 30-address sample, compared with one for Alibaba, while missing PTR records were nearly universal in both samples. That is a useful reason to check an assigned address carefully, not enough evidence to declare either provider’s entire IP pool clean or unsafe. For a purchase decision, the address you will actually use—and the specific list results relevant to your workload—matter more than this small provider-level snapshot.
