When a Bitcoin mining company becomes unprofitable, it normally does not shut every machine off at once. Management first curtails electricity use, disconnects the least efficient ASICs, sells some mined bitcoin, renegotiates power or hosting contracts and freezes expansion. If the deficit persists, the company may sell equipment, close or repurpose facilities, reduce hashrate, restructure debt or file for bankruptcy. The outcome depends on electricity cost, machine efficiency, bitcoin’s price and block subsidy, network difficulty, liquidity and whether the site can earn revenue from hosting or other data-center workloads.
What “unprofitable” means for a Bitcoin miner
A miner can report bitcoin production while losing cash. The key question is whether the value of coins produced exceeds the costs required to produce them and keep the business operating.

The most useful first measure is the cash contribution margin: bitcoin revenue minus electricity, hosting, pool fees, labor, repairs and other operating cash costs. A broader all-in cost also includes depreciation, interest, corporate overhead and expansion capital. A company can therefore show a positive cash margin while still reporting an accounting loss, or report production growth while its cash position worsens.

If that contribution is negative, the affected machines should be switched off unless they provide another benefit, such as a demand-response payment or a favorable hosting commitment.

Published cost examples
| Company and period | Reported measure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| MARA Holdings, year ended December 31, 2024 | Energy represented 40.8% of owned mining revenue | Electricity was the company’s largest controllable cost in that period; this is a share of owned-mining revenue, not an industry-wide average. |
| MARA Holdings, 2025 | Energy represented 38.5% of owned mining revenue | The percentage is company-specific and period-specific; a lower share does not by itself prove that total profitability improved. |
| MARA Holdings, 2025 | $38,956 purchased energy cost per bitcoin at owned facilities | This is an energy-cost figure for owned facilities, not a complete all-in cost per bitcoin. |
| Riot Platforms, 2024 | 48.5% cost to mine one bitcoin excluding depreciation, measured as a percentage of production value | Because depreciation is excluded, the measure should not be treated as a full economic breakeven cost. |
These disclosures show why headline production is a poor health check by itself. Two miners producing the same number of coins can have very different margins because their power contracts, machine generations, uptime, cooling systems and financing costs differ.
Why a mining operation falls below break-even
Bitcoin price and the block subsidy
Mining revenue is primarily the value of the bitcoin earned from block rewards and transaction fees. A lower bitcoin price reduces revenue immediately while many costs, especially contracted power, leases, salaries and interest, remain fixed. The April 2024 subsidy halving reduced the new-coin reward per block, so a fleet needed a higher bitcoin price, lower costs, better efficiency or more transaction-fee revenue to produce the same gross revenue as before.
Network hashrate and difficulty
When more computing power competes for the network’s rewards, each unit of hashrate generally earns fewer coins. Difficulty and hashrate can rise even while a company’s own fleet is unchanged. A miner that was profitable at one network difficulty can become marginal after competitors deploy newer machines or add inexpensive power capacity.

Power is often the largest controllable cost. MARA’s 2024 filing said energy was 40.8% of owned mining revenue, and its 2025 disclosure put the figure at 38.5%. Spot-market exposure, demand charges, transmission fees and seasonal price spikes can turn a positive month into a loss. A fixed-price contract can protect margins, but it may also prevent a company from benefiting when market prices fall and may include minimum-purchase obligations.
Fleet efficiency, cooling and uptime
ASICs from older generations produce fewer hashes for each kilowatt-hour. A machine can be technically functional but economically obsolete if its power draw and repair burden exceed the coins it can earn. Heat, dust, curtailment, transformer failures and software outages reduce effective hashrate while many costs continue. The relevant comparison is profitable hashrate after downtime and cooling overhead, not the nameplate capacity of the installed fleet.

Debt and capital spending
Debt service does not fall automatically when bitcoin revenue falls. Interest, equipment loans, convertible notes and power deposits can consume the cash generated by otherwise viable machines. Expansion financed at a high bitcoin price can become a liability when the market turns, particularly if new machines arrive before the site has enough low-cost power.
What management normally does first
-
Curtailed dispatch
The company reduces load during expensive or constrained periods. MARA’s 2025 filing explains that it may curtail operations when prices rise or supply is constrained to avoid using power at increased rates. Curtailment preserves cash without permanently abandoning the site, and a company with a demand-response agreement may receive compensation for reducing consumption.

Fleet triage
Operators rank machines by contribution margin, efficiency, reliability and remaining useful life. The oldest or least efficient ASICs are switched off first. Some are stored for a price recovery, sold to another operator or written down; machines with positive margins remain online. This can reduce reported hashrate even when the facility itself stays open.
-
Cash preservation
Management may sell part of its bitcoin holdings, draw available credit, refinance maturities, issue equity, defer new purchases and cut discretionary spending. Selling coins provides liquidity but removes an asset that could appreciate, while equity issuance can dilute existing shareholders. The urgency rises when debt maturities are near or lenders require collateral maintenance.
-
Renegotiation of contracts
Power suppliers, landlords, hosting customers and equipment vendors may agree to lower rates, revised minimums, delayed payments or longer terms. A hosted miner can sometimes move machines to a cheaper site, but relocation involves transport, installation, firmware configuration and downtime.

-
Expansion pause
Projects that looked attractive under earlier price assumptions are delayed or cancelled. Preserving cash for existing obligations usually takes priority over adding hashrate, even if a larger fleet would increase the company’s share of network rewards.

When temporary losses become a structural crisis
A short period of negative margins can be managed if the company has liquid bitcoin, undrawn credit, flexible power contracts and debt maturities far in the future. The situation becomes more dangerous when several pressures arrive together: a falling bitcoin price, rising difficulty, expensive electricity, equipment failures and restricted access to capital.
- Liquidity: Cash and unencumbered bitcoin determine how long losses can be funded.
- Debt schedule: A large maturity or covenant test can force asset sales at an unfavorable price.
- Contract flexibility: Curtailment rights and the ability to exit or reprice hosting agreements can matter more than a small difference in advertised power rates.
- Fleet replacement needs: Deferred maintenance and obsolete ASICs can require a large capital injection just as margins are weakest.
- Alternative revenue: A site that can host third-party miners or other computing workloads has more options than a single-purpose facility.
What happens to rigs and facilities
Machines are sold, retired or relocated
ASICs are specialized and depreciate quickly as more efficient models arrive. A distressed seller may accept a steep discount, sell machines in batches, or dismantle a facility for parts. Buyers assess hash-per-kilowatt efficiency, firmware compatibility, warranty status and the cost of shipping and recommissioning. If expected mining revenue never covers power and operating costs, a machine has little value to a miner even if it still works.
Facilities may close or change purpose
A company can shut a high-cost site while keeping cheaper sites online. It may sell the building, sublease capacity or convert the electrical and cooling infrastructure to third-party hosting. Some operators are also pursuing artificial-intelligence or high-performance-computing workloads, but those conversions require suitable grid capacity, network connectivity, cooling, redundancy and customers; a mining building is not automatically an AI data center.
A documented distressed example illustrates the effect on production: after the Helios closure and equipment sales described in 2025 reporting, output fell to 65 BTC in the first half of 2025 from 442 BTC in the first half of the prior year. A production collapse of that scale can be a deliberate cash-preservation decision rather than proof that every remaining machine is offline.

What happens to debt if the miner cannot pay
Before a formal filing, a company may seek waivers, exchange debt for equity, extend maturities or sell assets to raise cash. Secured lenders generally have claims against pledged bitcoin, equipment or other collateral; unsecured creditors rank differently under the applicable insolvency law. The precise result depends on the contracts and jurisdiction.
In a U.S. Chapter 11 case, the company normally continues operating under court supervision while it proposes a plan. It can reject or renegotiate burdensome contracts, sell assets, obtain debtor-in-possession financing and distribute reorganized equity or cash according to creditor priorities. Core Scientific’s affiliates filed a Chapter 11 plan on January 15, 2024, demonstrating that a mining company can attempt to preserve operating assets while changing its capital structure.
If reorganization cannot produce a viable business, equipment and facilities may be sold in liquidation. Proceeds go first to administrative expenses and secured claims, with any remainder distributed to lower-ranking creditors and shareholders according to the legal priority scheme. Shareholders can be wiped out even when some machines continue operating under a buyer.
Can a mining company survive a Bitcoin halving?
Yes, but survival is not automatic. A halving reduces the number of new bitcoins earned per block, so a miner must offset the reduction through a higher bitcoin price, lower energy cost, more efficient ASICs, better uptime, transaction-fee revenue or a combination of these factors.
Recommended Free Tools
The strongest preparation is visible before the halving: long-duration low-cost power, a modern fleet, manageable debt, cash reserves and contracts that allow curtailment. A company that depends on expensive spot electricity and highly leveraged expansion has less room to absorb the reward reduction. Management may also choose to hold fewer coins, sell production regularly and preserve liquidity rather than maximize reported bitcoin holdings.

How to judge whether an unprofitable miner can recover
Use the following checklist rather than relying on bitcoin production or hashrate alone.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the all-in cash cost per bitcoin, and what non-cash items are excluded? | Separating electricity and operating cash costs from depreciation prevents a misleading comparison. |
| What is the effective electricity price, including demand, transmission and hosting charges? | A low advertised energy rate may not be the amount actually paid. |
| How long do power contracts last, and can the company curtail or terminate them? | Flexibility limits losses during price spikes; inflexible minimums can create liabilities. |
| How efficient and reliable is the fleet? | Hash-per-kilowatt, machine age, cooling overhead and uptime determine productive capacity. |
| What bitcoin, cash and unused credit are available? | Liquidity determines whether management can survive a prolonged negative margin without distressed sales. |
| When do debt maturities and interest payments fall due? | A solvent operation can still fail if a large payment arrives before margins recover. |
| Can the site earn hosting, AI, HPC or another contracted revenue stream? | Alternative revenue can keep valuable power and buildings productive when self-mining is uneconomic. |
| How are network difficulty and competing hashrate changing? | Higher competition lowers the coins earned by each unit of computing power. |
Do miners shut down when electricity costs exceed revenue?
Usually, the affected machines do. The decision is made at the machine, site or contract level, not necessarily for the entire company. If a facility has a fixed power commitment, management may keep some load running, negotiate a settlement or use the site for hosting. If curtailment payments exceed mining revenue during a peak-price period, reducing consumption can be the more profitable action.
A shutdown can therefore be temporary, selective or permanent. Temporary curtailment waits for better power prices; selective shutdown removes only machines with negative margins; permanent closure follows when the site cannot earn enough to justify repairs, rent, debt and staff.
The likely end states
- Recovery: Bitcoin price, fees or operating efficiency improve before liquidity runs out, allowing idle machines to return.
- Smaller self-mining business: The company keeps only the lowest-cost sites and sells excess equipment.
- Hosting or data-center pivot: Customers pay for power and infrastructure, reducing exposure to bitcoin’s price.
- Asset sale: A buyer acquires machines, land, power rights or an entire facility at a distressed valuation.
- Restructuring: Creditors exchange claims, extend maturities or take ownership through a court-approved plan.
- Liquidation: Operations stop and assets are sold when no viable capital structure remains.
In every case, the decisive comparison is not how many bitcoins were mined last month. It is whether each operating site can produce cash after electricity and other variable costs, and whether the company has enough liquidity and contractual flexibility to endure the next adverse move in price, difficulty or power markets.
