Your Battle.net account and its characters remain, but the account reverts to Free Trial status. You can generally play Modern WoW only through level 20 until you add game time or restart a subscription. Your practical risk is time-sensitive mail and Auction House listings expiring—not losing levels, gear, gold, mounts, achievements, or other character progress.
Your characters stay on the account
When recurring game time ends, Blizzard does not run the in-game character-deletion process. The characters remain associated with the same account, including their levels, equipment, inventory, mounts, achievements, professions and other stored progress. A Blizzard customer-support representative, Vrakthris, described the result this way in 2023: “If you stopped paying your subscription or otherwise discontinued adding game time to the account, from 2004 to present, your account and characters would be basically unchanged (assuming the game itself didn’t change – i.e. Level Squish from Shadowlands) until you returned.”

“Basically unchanged” is important. Your saved characters are not frozen in a separate version of the game. If Blizzard changes classes, systems, level caps, items or the level structure while you are away, your character will reflect those game-wide changes when you come back. A level squish, for example, can alter a character’s displayed level without representing a loss of progress. That is different from an account losing the character.

Blizzard’s Free Trial FAQ says: “Whenever your account doesn’t have an active subscription or non-recurring game time, its status will revert to that of a Free Trial account.” The status change is an access restriction, not a deletion event.

Blizzard summarizes the paid-access requirement as: “To play World of Warcraft you must add game time or a subscription to your World of Warcraft account.” Its support guidance further states that adding either “allows you to play past level 20 in Modern WoW, and play WoW Classic and Wrath Classic without any restriction.” The exact product names and Classic offerings can change as Blizzard updates its game lineup, but the access principle remains: an active entitlement is required for unrestricted play.
What you keep, and what you cannot use immediately
The following distinction helps avoid the most common misunderstanding. Your data remains, while the account’s ability to use it is reduced.

Free Trial limits are account-wide access rules, not a punishment applied to a particular character. A high-level character can remain listed on your account even though the account cannot use it normally while it is inactive.

The real risk: expiring mail and auctions
Mail and Auction House listings have their own expiration rules. Blizzard support guidance recommends finishing or canceling active auctions and clearing character mail before leaving. If a message or auction expires, it can be purged according to the game’s normal time-to-live process. That practical cleanup issue should not be confused with character deletion: an expired item or message is not evidence that the character was removed.
Before your last paid day
- Collect proceeds and items from completed Auction House sales.
- Cancel listings you do not want to leave active and retrieve the returned items when they become available.
- Open mail that contains gold, equipment or other items, and move those items into your bags or bank.
- Check every character, not only the one you played most recently. Mailboxes and auctions are character-specific.
- Do not rely on an old message remaining indefinitely while the account is inactive; expiration is controlled by the game’s mail rules.
There is no need to liquidate your bank, delete characters or transfer valuable items simply because you are taking a break. Those actions create more opportunities for an accidental loss than allowing the account to remain inactive.
Inactive characters are not the same as deleted characters
Two separate systems are often mixed together in forum answers. An expired subscription leaves a character inactive on the account. Choosing Delete in the character-selection screen starts the deletion process for that specific character. The restoration windows published by Blizzard apply to the second situation only.

After the applicable period, Blizzard says a deleted character is purged from the database and no longer appears on the restoration list. These deadlines do not count down merely because you stopped paying. A character you leave untouched on an inactive account is not placed into the deletion queue.

Because Blizzard can change level structures, do not interpret a level squish as an automatic deletion or as a reset of an inactive character’s storage status.
How to stop paying without creating avoidable problems
- Cancel recurring billing. Use the subscription-management area of your Battle.net account to cancel the recurring subscription. Cancellation stops the next renewal; it does not normally cut short game time you have already purchased.
- Record the end date. Confirm the date shown in your account so you know when the account will move to Free Trial status. A cancellation confirmation email is useful if a billing question arises later.
- Clean up auctions and mail. Follow the checklist above on every realm and character that holds time-sensitive items.
- Secure the account. Keep your Battle.net password unique, enable available account-security protections and review the account’s security information before a long absence. An inactive subscription is not a security measure; an unattended account can still be targeted.
- Leave characters intact. Do not delete a character as a way to “pause” it. Deletion introduces the level-dependent restoration deadline that an ordinary subscription lapse does not.
What you may notice when you log in during the break
The launcher and account pages can still identify your account, but game access may stop at the entitlement check. If you enter Modern WoW under Free Trial status, the level-20 ceiling and starter-account restrictions apply. Depending on the current rules, you may also find that trading, sending or receiving mail, Auction House use, guild functions, whispering, public chat or other social features are limited. Blizzard can revise these restrictions, so check its current Free Trial documentation rather than relying on an old forum post.

You may also encounter normal game changes made during your absence: renamed currencies, redesigned talent trees, altered professions, changed class abilities, updated zones or a different level cap. Those are live-service changes applied to everyone. They do not indicate that an inactive character was deleted or reset.

Returning is normally a matter of restoring the account entitlement, not recovering a lost character. Blizzard advises that the order for game time or a subscription must complete before the account becomes active. Processing can take up to 24 hours depending on the payment method.

- Sign in to the original Battle.net account. Make sure you are not creating a second account or selecting a different region by mistake.
- Choose an access option. Add non-recurring game time if you want a one-time period, or restart a recurring subscription if you expect to play continuously.
- Wait for order completion. Check the transaction status and allow up to 24 hours when the payment method requires additional processing.
- Restart the game client. Once the entitlement is active, sign out and back in if the launcher still shows Free Trial status.
- Review returning-character changes. Read current patch notes and system guides before judging a changed level, item or ability as missing progress.
- Check mail and auctions carefully. Items that expired during the break may no longer be recoverable, while the character itself should still be present.
Common scenarios
“I stopped paying but never clicked Delete.”
Your characters should remain on the account. The account is restricted to Free Trial access until you reactivate game time or a subscription.
“My level-70 character is not playable.”
That is consistent with the Free Trial boundary. Add active game time or a subscription to restore access beyond level 20 in Modern WoW.
“My gold or gear is missing after I returned.”
First distinguish stored character data from time-sensitive mail. Check the character’s bags, bank and collections, then consider whether the missing item was left in mail or tied to an auction that expired. Also account for game-wide item or currency changes made during your absence.
“I deleted the character before taking a break.”
The deletion-restoration table applies. A level 10–49 character has a published 90-day window, level 50–59 has 120 days and level 60 or higher has 365 days. If the character no longer appears in the restoration list, Blizzard says the database purge has occurred.
“I returned years later and cannot find the character.”
Verify the original Battle.net account, the correct region and realm, and any game-version filters in the character screen. If the character was intentionally deleted, compare the deletion date with the applicable restoration window. An expired subscription by itself is not a deletion explanation.

The key takeaway is simple: stopping a subscription changes what the account can access, not whether the account owns its characters. Preserve mail and auction items before they expire, avoid deleting characters as a pause mechanism, and reactivate game time or a subscription when you are ready to play again.
