A grocery-store merger does not automatically preserve, combine, or erase your rewards account. The retailer may keep the same account, move you to a replacement program, convert your balance into a different points currency, or leave banners on separate systems. The merger notice and the loyalty program’s terms determine what happens, so check those documents before assuming your phone number, points, coupons, or fuel rewards will work after the change.
Why a merger can change your rewards account
A grocery loyalty account is a record in a retailer’s customer system, not an asset that automatically follows a store building to a new owner. During a merger, the companies must decide how to match customer identities, which program rules to use, and whether the acquired banner will use the buyer’s app, card, rewards currency, and expiration schedule.
That decision can affect more than a points balance. Your account may contain a rewards number, a digital or physical card, an alternate ID such as a phone number, clipped digital coupons, personalized prices, fuel points, subscription benefits, and online-order history. Each item can have a different treatment during integration.
There is no published cross-industry rate showing how often grocery accounts are preserved, merged, or closed after a transaction. Treat every announcement as retailer-specific and look for a stated migration date, conversion formula, expiration deadline, and support process.

The four outcomes shoppers should expect
1. The existing account continues
The buyer may keep the acquired banner’s loyalty platform and allow your existing rewards number, card, or phone number to work as before. This is the least disruptive outcome, but it still may come with revised terms, new privacy notices, or changes to where benefits can be redeemed.
2. Members move into a replacement account
You may be asked to sign in through a new app or website, verify your email and mobile number, or accept new program terms. The retailer can match the old account to the new one, but a matching process is not guaranteed to recognize every record—especially when names, phone numbers, or email addresses differ.
3. Balances are converted into a new currency
A retailer can translate old rewards into points, credits, or another denomination. The conversion may preserve approximate value, but it can also introduce a new expiration clock or a different redemption threshold. Never assume that “points transferred” means the same number or the same deadline.

4. Banners remain separate
A parent company can own several grocery banners while keeping different apps, rewards numbers, offer catalogs, and redemption rules. Shopping at one banner may not earn or redeem benefits at another unless the terms expressly say that the programs are linked.
What the official terms usually control
Your account identity
Kroger’s current Rewards Program Terms & Conditions say a rewards number can be delivered through a digital account or a physical card. Eligible purchases earn points when the rewards number or an Alt ID is used. The terms also associate online orders with the account used for the order and place responsibility on the member to keep account information current.
That language matters during a merger. If an old phone number is no longer yours, an email address is misspelled, or two household members use different accounts, the retailer may have difficulty matching your history. Before an announced migration, sign in and make sure your name, email address, mobile number, and preferred contact details are accurate.

What counts as an eligible purchase
Loyalty terms define which transactions earn points and which identification method must be presented. A purchase made without the correct rewards number may not be attached to your account later. Online orders can also be tied to the account used at checkout rather than to a separate card you use in stores.

Where rewards can be used
Ownership alone does not establish a common redemption network. The relevant program terms should identify participating banners, stores, websites, and apps. A benefit earned at one banner can remain restricted to that banner even when another company owns both businesses.
How to compare a merger notice
When a retailer publishes an FAQ, email, or terms update, compare the items below. Save a copy because web pages and app language can change after the migration.

A documented conversion example: Albertsons for U
Albertsons Companies’ Albertsons for U program demonstrates why a merger or major program change requires close reading. The program is free and covers participating banners including Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Carrs, Shaw’s, Star Market, Safeway, Andronico’s, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Kings, and Balducci’s. Its terms describe points, personalized deals, and rewards.
For the change taking effect April 1, 2024, the company said unused March rewards would be converted to points at a rate of 1 reward = 100 points and carried into April. The converted points and newly earned points followed the stated two-calendar-month cycle and expired at the end of May. The same FAQ said that, when the automatic-cash-off option is enabled, 100 points = $1 cash off.
Those figures are specific to that program change. They are not a standard grocery-industry conversion and should not be applied to another retailer’s merger. A notice that uses the word “conversion” should be read for its exact formula, the date the clock starts, and whether old and new balances expire together.

Albertsons also states that points earned at participating banner stores and through its Deals & Delivery apps or websites are combined when they are attached to the same account. At the same time, grocery rewards can be limited to the banner that offers them. In practice, a shared account record does not necessarily mean every reward is redeemable at every owned banner.

Integration plans can change before closing. An October 14, 2022 customer FAQ about the proposed Kroger-Albertsons transaction described an expected more-personalized loyalty program and cited an anticipated customer base of approximately 85 million households. That was a transaction-era company projection, not a promise that every account would be combined on a particular date.
In February 2024, the Associated Press reported that the proposal faced legal challenges from the Federal Trade Commission and states. A proposed deal can be delayed, blocked, modified, or abandoned. Until a transaction closes and the retailer issues operational instructions, keep using the existing program under its current terms and do not create duplicate accounts based solely on an announcement.
What to do before the migration date
- Find the official notice. Read the merger FAQ, email, app message, and current loyalty-program terms. Use the retailer’s own website or app rather than links forwarded through social media.
- Verify your identity details. Confirm the email address, mobile number, name, mailing address, and sign-in credentials on the account. If the program uses a physical card or Alt ID, record that number too.
- Capture your balances. Save screenshots or downloaded statements showing grocery points, fuel points, unused rewards, clipped coupons, personalized offers, subscription status, and any expiration dates. Keep recent receipts that show the rewards number used.
- Read the expiration section. Identify whether the old balance carries over unchanged, converts into a new currency, or must be redeemed by a deadline. Note whether the date applies to converted points, newly earned points, or both.
- Decide whether to redeem near-expiring rewards. Using a reward before the deadline can prevent a loss, but first check whether redemption triggers a conversion, changes your balance, or makes a coupon unavailable. Do not empty an account solely because a merger was announced when the official notice promises a protected carryover.
- Do not open a second account unless instructed. Duplicate accounts can split purchase history and make automated matching harder. Follow the retailer’s stated re-registration process instead of guessing.
- Record the migration details. Write down the effective date, required app or website, customer-service phone number, and any grace period. Save the notice as a PDF or screenshot in case the wording changes.
How to check the account after the change
- Sign in through the official retailer app or type the retailer’s known web address yourself.
- Confirm that your name, email, mobile number, rewards number, and banner affiliation are correct.
- Compare the displayed points, fuel points, rewards, coupons, and expiration dates with your saved evidence.
- Test a low-value purchase or an account lookup, if practical, before relying on a large reward at checkout.
- Check an online order or digital coupon only after confirming that the new account is attached to the intended banner.
A successful login is not proof that every benefit transferred. Review each category separately because a grocery-point balance, fuel balance, clipped offer, and subscription can be migrated by different systems.
What to do if points or offers are missing
Start with the matching details
Compare the old and new rewards numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses. A typo or a second household account can cause the retailer to display a new empty profile while the original balance remains elsewhere.
Assemble evidence before contacting support
Have your old rewards number, the dates and locations of qualifying purchases, receipts, screenshots, downloaded statements, and the exact migration notice available. State the balance shown before the change, what appears now, and the date you first noticed the discrepancy.
Ask for a specific correction
Request an account-linking review or balance adjustment rather than a general explanation. Ask the representative to confirm which banner’s terms apply, whether the balance was converted, and whether an expiration deadline was extended during the migration. Keep the case number and follow up in writing if the first response does not resolve the issue.

If support says the balance is under review, ask whether the disputed points or rewards can be protected from expiration. Do not delete the old app, discard the physical card, or close the original account until the retailer confirms that the migration is complete.
Answers to common shopper decisions
Will my old phone number or card still work?
It may, but only if the retailer’s migration instructions preserve that identifier. Verify it in the account and test it after the stated transition date; do not assume that a card accepted at one banner will work at another.
Do fuel points and clipped coupons move with grocery points?
Not automatically. The notice should address fuel points, digital coupons, personalized prices, and subscriptions separately. A grocery balance can transfer while another benefit expires, remains banner-specific, or requires a new opt-in.
Can I use rewards at every banner owned by the merged company?
Only where the participating-banner terms allow it. A shared account or combined points ledger does not, by itself, create universal redemption rights.
Should I spend points before the merger?
Redeem rewards that are demonstrably close to expiration after checking the official conversion rules. Otherwise, preserve the balance and evidence until you know whether the retailer will carry it over or convert it.
