When a publisher closes a game’s online services, you do not automatically lose every part of the game. The result depends on what the servers do. A title with a self-contained campaign may keep working offline while multiplayer, leaderboards, news, cloud features, and online rewards disappear. An online-only or server-authenticated title can become impossible to launch, download, install, or play.
Delisting is a separate event: removing a game from a store does not necessarily disable copies already owned. Conversely, a shutdown can remove access even when the game remains listed in a library. The safest way to judge a purchase is to check offline launch, authentication, save, downloadable-content, and physical-disc requirements before paying.

The four outcomes of a service shutdown
“Online services” can mean several different systems. A publisher may retire only optional features, or it may switch off the authentication and gameplay infrastructure that the entire product requires. Read the shutdown notice for the specific title rather than assuming every game follows the same pattern.

Ubisoft’s legacy-service notices commonly state that online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, Units, Challenges, and similar functions are being retired while offline modes remain available. The company says, “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you.” That usually means a campaign, local matches, or other explicitly offline content can still launch, but online progression and rewards stop.

Offline support can still have qualifications. A game may require one successful activation, a particular patch, or a platform account before it will run without a connection. Cloud saves may stop syncing even though a local save remains usable. Downloadable campaigns, user-created levels, or cooperative missions may fail if they are delivered from a server rather than stored on the device.
Online-only games can become unplayable
If the executable needs a live login, a server-issued token, or a constantly available game backend, shutting down that service can remove the entire product. In the documented case of The Crew, Ubisoft listed 31 March 2024 as the end of online services. Government analysis records that Ubisoft subsequently revoked digital licenses, leaving consumers unable to download, install, or play the game.
A server requirement can exist even when a title appears to have a solo mode. The menu may show a campaign, but the game can still require authentication at every start, server-side world simulation, or a connection to validate purchased content. Once that dependency is closed, reinstalling from a purchased library does not restore access.

A delisted game disappears from a storefront’s search and can no longer be bought by new customers. Existing owners may continue to download it and play offline if the platform keeps the entitlement and the software has no failed server dependency. A publisher can also withdraw a title and later revoke access, so “it is in my library” and “it will launch” are separate questions.

Delisting may also stop access to expansions, soundtrack files, patches, or replacement installers. If a game depends on a mandatory update that is no longer hosted, a previously working disc or download can become difficult to reinstall even if the base entitlement remains.
Physical media is not an automatic backup
A disc helps only when it contains a complete, playable build. It cannot replace a server-side login, digital-rights-management check, mandatory day-one patch, or online gameplay backend. Some discs hold little more than an installer that downloads the real game; others contain a full offline build but still require account activation.
Before relying on a disc for long-term access, determine whether the game launches with the console or computer disconnected, whether the first-run activation can be repeated after a reinstall, and whether critical content is on the disc or downloaded later.

A store purchase normally gives you a platform entitlement or license to use software under specified terms, not ownership of the publisher’s servers or a guarantee that every feature will operate forever. The entitlement may allow redownloads while the store and publisher continue to support it, but it does not itself recreate authentication services that have been retired.

Three layers should be considered separately:
- Store entitlement: the account record showing that you bought or redeemed the game.
- Local software: the executable, patches, saves, and downloadable files already installed or backed up.
- Network services: login validation, matchmaking, cloud storage, statistics, user-generated content, and server-hosted game logic.
A shutdown may remove only the third layer, all three, or the ability to obtain the second layer again. License language, platform rules, and local consumer law determine what remedies may be available; a purchase receipt alone does not promise perpetual operation.
Check these dependencies before buying
Use the store listing, the publisher’s support FAQ, and the game’s manual or system requirements. Record the answers rather than relying on a marketing label such as “single-player.”

What disappears first when servers close
Publishers usually identify affected features in a service notice. Common losses include:
- Competitive and cooperative matchmaking, ranked modes, and leaderboards.
- In-game news feeds, daily challenges, statistics, achievements tied to server events, and online inventories.
- Cloud saves, cross-device progression, account-linked unlocks, and server-hosted economies.
- User-created maps, mods, races, galleries, or replays stored on the publisher’s infrastructure.
- Event rewards, virtual currencies, subscriptions, and downloadable items that require validation.
Offline features can remain intact, but only those that the notice specifically leaves supported. Ubisoft explains that closing services lets it concentrate resources on newer or more popular titles; that operational decision does not indicate which parts of an individual game are self-contained.

Two shutdown examples that show the difference
The Crew: loss of the whole product
The online service end date was 31 March 2024. Subsequent license revocation meant customers could not download, install, or play the game, according to government analysis. This is the severe case: an apparently purchased digital title became unavailable rather than merely losing multiplayer.
XDefiant: distribution and registration stopped
Ubisoft announced that new downloads and player registrations stopped on 3 December 2024. That date concerns new distribution and account creation; it should not be generalized to every Ubisoft title or treated as proof that all previously installed software has identical behavior. Check the title-specific notice for the final service date and the features that remain.

- Read the dependency language. Search the store page and support FAQ for “online connection required,” third-party-account requirements, server authentication, and offline-mode instructions.
- Test offline launch. Start the installed game with Wi-Fi and wired networking disabled. Quit completely, restart, and verify that the campaign and local saves load.
- Finish a reinstall test while support exists. Remove the game on a spare drive or console, reinstall it, and confirm whether activation, patches, and DLC downloads still work.
- Back up lawful local files. Keep installers, patches, configuration files, and saves where the platform permits it. These preserve local data but cannot reproduce a closed login service or multiplayer backend.
- Export what the game allows. Download cloud saves, screenshots, replays, or user-created work that the publisher provides an export function for; server-hosted copies may disappear without recovery.
- Record purchase evidence. Save the receipt, account identifier, platform, edition, DLC list, and shutdown announcement. This documentation is useful when requesting support or a remedy.
- Prefer lower-dependency releases for long-term play. DRM-free installers and complete offline builds remove fewer failure points, but inspect each title because “DRM-free” does not guarantee that every online feature is preserved.
What to do when access stops
If the game still launches but online features fail
Read the final service notice and disable settings that repeatedly request unavailable servers. Keep local saves and confirm that offline progression is being written to the device. Do not delete a working installation until you know a reinstall is possible.
If a reinstall or download fails
Capture the error message, date, platform, edition, account, and purchase proof. Check whether the store lists the title as delisted, whether the publisher offers a replacement build, and whether the platform has a redownload window. A disc may provide the base files, but it will not bypass a required account check.
If the license itself is revoked
Ask the publisher and platform for the written reason, the shutdown date, and any refund or replacement procedure. Keep communications in writing. If the response is inadequate, your documented purchase and jurisdiction will determine whether a consumer agency, card provider, or formal dispute route is appropriate.
What consumer law may provide
There is no worldwide right to perpetual access to every digital game. Remedies depend on where you live, the contract, the product’s advertised functions, and whether the service was supplied as an ongoing digital service.

When seeking help, describe the exact loss—such as inability to download, install, authenticate, or access a paid expansion—rather than simply saying that “the servers are down.”

DRM-free delivery removes a publisher-controlled activation check from the installation process. GOG’s Preservation Program says it maintains older games, supplies improvements and technical support, and delivers them without DRM. That approach can make offline installation and future reinstallation more resilient than a title tied to a live authentication server.
Preservation is not a universal guarantee. Each game must be checked for remaining online modes, third-party accounts, multiplayer matchmaking, cloud features, and downloadable content. A DRM-free installer can preserve the software files while the original online world, servers, or account inventory no longer exists.
The practical bottom line for a purchase decision
Treat a digital game as a combination of software and services. Buy with confidence when the campaign launches offline, authentication is limited or absent, saves are local, and the physical or downloaded build is complete. Accept greater shutdown risk when progression, content, or launch depends on servers, and understand that a disc does not change that dependency. Keep legal backups and purchase records, and read the title-specific end-of-service notice before assuming that a delisting, shutdown, or refund policy applies to your copy.
