If the online bank is an FDIC-insured bank, your deposits are normally transferred to another bank or paid directly by the FDIC. The standard protection is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. Any amount above the applicable limit becomes an uninsured claim against the failed bank’s receivership.
The crucial distinction is the legal bank holding the money. A fintech app or digital wallet may not be a bank at all, and its advertising does not create FDIC coverage. Your outcome depends on where the funds were actually deposited, whether pass-through requirements were met, and how your account ownership is recorded.

What normally happens when an online bank fails
An online bank with its own FDIC-insured charter is handled under the same deposit-insurance rules as a branch-based bank. The FDIC becomes both insurer and receiver when the bank is closed. Its preferred solution is a purchase-and-assumption transaction: a healthy bank assumes the failed bank’s insured deposits and usually continues providing access through its own systems.

The FDIC says its goal is to make insured-deposit payments within two business days. That is a target, not a guarantee for every account. Trust, fiduciary, brokered, business, or otherwise complicated accounts may require additional documentation before coverage can be determined.

Failure of the app you use does not by itself answer the question. You must establish whether the app is the bank, which chartered bank holds the funds, and whether your balance is a deposit rather than an investment product.
Start with the legal bank, not the app name
An online bank with its own charter
Some digital-only institutions are full banks with their own FDIC membership. Their savings, checking, and certificate accounts are deposits at that insured bank. If the institution closes, the $250,000-per-category rules apply directly to your accounts there, regardless of whether you opened them through a website or a mobile app.
Look for the bank’s legal name in your account agreement, statements, electronic disclosures, and FDIC notice. The consumer-facing brand can be different from the charter name. Verify that legal institution with the FDIC’s BankFind Suite rather than relying on an “FDIC insured” badge on a marketing page.

A fintech app using a partner bank
A nonbank fintech can arrange for customer money to be deposited at one or more FDIC-insured partner banks. In that structure, FDIC pass-through coverage may protect the beneficial owner, but only if the money has actually reached the insured bank and the required records identify each owner and the amount attributable to that owner.

The fintech’s own insolvency is a separate risk. FDIC insurance protects deposits at the insured bank; it does not protect against the insolvency or bankruptcy of a nonbank company. If an app fails while funds are still in the app’s operating account, or if its records do not support pass-through treatment, access and coverage can be delayed while ownership is sorted out.
How the FDIC handles a failed bank
Purchase-and-assumption transfer
In the usual resolution, an acquiring bank takes over insured deposits. You may receive new account numbers, login instructions, debit cards, or other operational notices, depending on the transaction. The acquiring bank becomes responsible for servicing the transferred deposits and setting the rate that applies after the transfer.
Direct deposits such as payroll and Social Security payments are automatically redirected to the acquiring bank’s accounts when deposits are assumed. You should still monitor your first incoming payment and update your employer, benefits agency, or bill-pay instructions if the new bank tells you that routing details have changed.
Direct payment when no buyer is found
If there is no acquiring institution, the FDIC pays insured depositors directly, generally by check or an equivalent method. The payment covers principal and accrued interest through the failure date, subject to the insurance limit. Accounts with incomplete ownership information or special legal arrangements can take longer because the FDIC must obtain and review supporting records.

What “two business days” means
The FDIC’s stated goal is payment within two business days. Weekends and bank holidays do not count as business days, and the goal does not eliminate delays caused by missing tax-identification numbers, trust documents, fiduciary records, brokered-deposit information, or disputes over ownership. Keep recent statements and account agreements available so you can document your balance quickly.
Understanding the $250,000 insurance limit
The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. It is not $250,000 for every app, login, account number, or product name. Deposits held in the same ownership category at the same insured bank are added together before coverage is calculated. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s current FAQ guidance, last updated April 1, 2024, states this limit in those terms.
| Situation | How balances are treated | Coverage implication |
|---|---|---|
| One person’s checking and savings at the same insured bank | Combined as single-owner deposits | One $250,000 limit applies to the total |
| One person’s account at Bank A and another at Bank B | Separated by insured institution | Each bank has its own applicable limit |
| Joint account owned by two people | Counted in the joint-ownership category | Coverage is calculated under the rules for that category, not as two unrelated single accounts |
| Revocable or irrevocable trust deposit | Depends on the trust’s ownership and beneficiary records | Documentation and beneficiary rules determine the amount |
| App account whose partner bank is Bank A | Combined with your other same-category deposits at Bank A | The app does not create a separate $250,000 limit |
Ownership categories include arrangements such as single accounts, joint accounts, certain trust accounts, retirement accounts, and accounts held by corporations or other entities. The exact calculation can change when beneficiaries, co-owners, trustees, or entity records are involved. Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) for a personalized estimate instead of assuming that two different product labels provide separate coverage.
How pass-through coverage works for fintech accounts
Pass-through coverage treats the underlying customer as the depositor even though a nonbank intermediary opened or services the account. To qualify, the funds must be deposited at an FDIC-insured bank, the arrangement must be eligible for pass-through treatment, and records maintained by the bank or intermediary must identify the beneficial owner and the amount owned by that person.

Pass-through coverage is not extra insurance. Suppose a fintech places your $80,000 balance at Bank A and you also have $190,000 in a single-owner savings account at Bank A. Both balances generally belong in the same single-owner category, producing $270,000 at that bank. The applicable limit would cover $250,000, leaving $20,000 exposed as an uninsured claim. The result does not change merely because one balance appears in an app and the other appears on the bank’s website.
Ask the provider which partner bank holds your money, whether deposits can be distributed among several partner banks, how your ownership information is transmitted, and what happens if a partner bank fails. Read the account agreement for language about custodial, omnibus, or pooled accounts; those terms indicate that recordkeeping is central to determining coverage.
Interest, access, and account changes after closure
FDIC coverage includes principal and interest accrued through the date of the bank failure, up to the applicable limit. Interest stops accruing when the bank closes. If another bank assumes the account, that bank sets the post-failure interest rate and may offer a different rate or product terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen the acquiring bank changes the rate, you may withdraw insured funds without an early-withdrawal penalty caused solely by that change. Review the new disclosures before leaving money in a certificate or other time deposit. A transfer can preserve the principal while changing the yield, maturity date, or access method.
Best Value
Online access can be interrupted while systems, cards, and authentication are moved. Save statements, tax forms, transaction histories, and beneficiary confirmations before a problem occurs. During a resolution, use only contact details published by the FDIC or the acquiring bank; scammers often imitate failure notices and request passwords or one-time codes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to money above the insurance limit
Any balance above the applicable limit is not guaranteed by FDIC deposit insurance. The excess becomes an uninsured claim in the failed bank’s receivership. The receiver may distribute recoveries as assets are sold, but the amount and timing are uncertain and can be less than the full excess.
Interest that accrued before failure is included when the insured amount is calculated. Interest that would have accrued after closure is not protected because accrual stops on the failure date. Keep evidence of balances on that date, especially if deposits arrived or transfers were pending when the bank was closed.
Deposits are different from investments
FDIC insurance applies to qualifying deposit accounts, not every product sold through a banking app. A cash-looking balance can represent a money-market mutual fund, brokerage sweep, annuity, or another investment rather than a bank deposit.
| Product or holding | FDIC deposit insurance? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Checking, savings, or certificate at an FDIC-insured bank | Generally yes, within the applicable limit | Bank charter, ownership category, and combined balances |
| Fintech balance placed at an insured partner bank | Potentially, through pass-through coverage | Actual placement of funds and owner-level records |
| Money-market mutual fund | No | Fund prospectus and brokerage disclosures |
| Stocks or bonds | No | Brokerage custody and applicable investor-protection rules |
| Annuity or life-insurance contract | No | Insurance-company guarantees and state insurance rules |
Calling a product a “cash account” does not settle its legal status. The account agreement should state whether you own a deposit at a bank or shares, securities, or an insurance contract.
How to check an online account before relying on it
- Find the chartered institution. Search the legal bank name in the account agreement, statements, and disclosures. Confirm it with the FDIC BankFind Suite.
- Confirm the product type. Determine whether the balance is a deposit account. Do not assume that a wallet balance, sweep, fund, annuity, or brokerage feature is FDIC-insured.
- Ask about pass-through treatment. If a fintech is involved, request a clear explanation of the partner-bank arrangement and how your name, tax identification number, ownership category, and balance are recorded.
- Map every balance at that bank. Add checking, savings, certificates, brokered deposits, and app-based deposits in the same ownership category. Separate calculations by insured bank, not by brand or app.
- Run the numbers through EDIE. The FDIC Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator can reveal when combined balances exceed the standard limit or when ownership details need attention.
- Save evidence and contingency access. Keep current statements, account agreements, beneficiary records, and a second way to pay essential bills if online access is temporarily unavailable.
What to do if your online bank is closed
- Check official notices. Confirm the closure through the FDIC and the acquiring bank, not through an unsolicited text, email, or social-media message.
- Record your balance and pending transactions. Download statements and note deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and interest posted through the closure date.
- Follow transfer instructions. If a bank assumes the deposits, activate the new online access and inspect the account for the correct balance, beneficiaries, and recurring payments.
- Verify incoming payments. Payroll and government direct deposits are normally redirected automatically in a purchase-and-assumption, but confirm the first payment and correct any employer or agency records if instructed.
- Submit documents promptly. Trust, fiduciary, entity, or brokered accounts may require proof of ownership before the FDIC can determine coverage.
- Separate insured and uninsured amounts. Treat any excess over the limit as a receivership claim and retain every claim number or notice you receive.
- Protect your credentials. Use official websites and phone numbers. No legitimate resolution process requires you to disclose a password or one-time authentication code to an unexpected caller.
Common situations and their likely outcomes
| Your situation | Likely treatment | Main issue to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| All deposits are at an FDIC-insured online bank and total $200,000 in one category | Normally fully insured and transferred or paid | Follow the new bank’s access instructions |
| You have $300,000 in single-owner deposits at one insured bank | Up to $250,000 is insured; the remainder is an uninsured receivership claim | Determine the exact balance and claim process |
| You use a fintech app whose partner bank is clearly identified and records are complete | Pass-through coverage may apply at the partner bank | Combine the app balance with other same-category deposits there |
| The app fails but funds were never deposited at an insured bank | FDIC deposit insurance may not apply | Pursue the app’s insolvency or customer-asset process |
| Your balance is a mutual fund, annuity, stock, or bond | Not an FDIC-insured deposit | Use the product’s own custody, investor-protection, or insurance rules |
The safest evaluation is therefore legal and account-specific: identify the insured institution, classify the holding, calculate aggregation by ownership category, and understand how records and access would work if a partner bank or service provider failed.
