Your downloaded Game Pass files usually stay on your Xbox or Windows PC, but the games stop launching when the subscription expires. Game Pass access is an entitlement, not ownership: the Xbox or Microsoft Store license check confirms that your account currently has access. When the paid period ends, that check fails unless you renew, buy the game, or use another valid license.
Turning off recurring billing does not end access immediately. You can continue playing through the date already covered by your payment. Access changes when that billing period ends, or earlier if the title leaves the Game Pass catalog.

What actually changes when Game Pass expires
The installation normally remains on your drive
Game Pass downloads are ordinary game installations stored on your console or PC. Expiration does not normally mean the files are erased automatically. They may remain visible in your library and continue using storage until you uninstall them. Keeping the files, however, does not give you a right to launch them.

When you start a downloaded title, the Xbox or Microsoft Store checks the digital entitlement associated with the signed-in account. A Game Pass download is authorized because the account has an active subscription and the title is included for that plan, region and platform. After expiration, the entitlement is no longer valid, so the game can be displayed as unavailable, ask you to renew or purchase it, or fail the license check when you try to launch it.

This is why installation is not ownership. The data is still present, but the permission to use it has ended. Deleting and reinstalling the game will not restore access; only a valid subscription, a purchase license or another supported ownership route can do that.
Canceling recurring billing is different from expiring now
If you switch off recurring billing, Microsoft keeps the subscription active until the end date shown for the current paid period. You retain the Game Pass catalog access covered by that period, then lose the entitlement when the date arrives. A cancellation confirmation therefore is not the same as an immediate lockout.
A catalog removal can end access first
A title can leave the Game Pass catalog before your own subscription ends. The Xbox FAQ treats a game leaving the library as a separate event from your subscription expiring. If the title is removed, its Game Pass entitlement can end on the removal date even though your plan remains active. Catalog dates and availability can differ by plan, region and platform.

What happens to your save data
Play Anywhere games can follow your gamertag
For participating Xbox Play Anywhere games, progress is associated with your Xbox gamertag rather than being tied only to one machine. Microsoft’s official usage rules state: “When you play an XBOX Play Anywhere game, your game progress is saved on with your gamertag so you can pick up where you left on when you log into another device.” That allows a supported title’s progress to move between compatible Xbox and Windows devices signed in to the same account.

Cloud saves can make a later return possible
Xbox’s automatic cloud-save system can preserve progress while you are playing a supported game. If you renew Game Pass or purchase the title later, signing in with the same account can make that synchronized save available again. The game itself may be inaccessible during the gap, but an entitlement pause is not the same thing as deleting a synchronized save.
Support is title-dependent
Play Anywhere and the relevant Xbox save system apply only to participating games. A title that does not support those features may use a different save arrangement, and its progress may not synchronize between devices. Before assuming that a save will follow you, check the game’s store listing for Play Anywhere or Xbox cloud-save support and use the same Microsoft account and gamertag when you return.
Nothing in the expiration process guarantees that every form of local or game-specific data is preserved. If a game has its own account, server or save system, its rules can differ from the standard Xbox behavior.

Renew Game Pass
Renewing restores the subscription entitlement for titles that are still included in your plan and available in your region and platform. Once the account shows an active subscription, the installed copy can normally pass the license check without a second download. Renewal also restores the subscription features attached to the plan for the active period.

Buy the game digitally
You can purchase a permanent digital license through the Microsoft Store. If you bought the game while using Game Pass—for example, by opening its store page and completing the purchase—you do not need to buy it again when the subscription ends. A purchase changes the entitlement from subscription access to a license for that title.
If you only selected “install” or downloaded the game from the Game Pass catalog, you were renting access through the subscription. That download alone is not a purchase. A Microsoft-hosted community answer explains the distinction this way: “If you bought the game on GamePass (aka went to the game’s store page and bought it there) then you do not need to buy it again. If you are simply downloading the game from GP then you’re renting it and once the subscription ends the game no longer works.” This is community-authored guidance, not a universal promise about every game’s separate account or licensing system.
Use a physical disc on a supported console
A compatible physical disc is another ownership route on consoles that accept that disc. The disc supplies the console with a license to use the corresponding game, subject to the title’s platform and edition requirements. A PC, a disc-less console or a version that does not match the installed edition cannot use this option.

Renewing versus buying: which route fits your situation?
The better choice depends on how long you expect to play, whether you want the wider catalog, and which subscription features you use. The table separates the entitlements so that a download is not mistaken for ownership.

Compare the price of continued subscription months with the one-time purchase price over the period you actually expect to play. Include the value of the rest of the catalog and any cloud or perk benefits you use; do not count the download itself as an owned asset.

Not every plan includes every title
Game Pass catalog membership, included features and availability vary by subscription plan. A game available under one plan may not be included under another, and a plan change can alter your access even when the account remains active.
Regional and platform differences matter
Microsoft can offer different catalogs, release dates and features by country or region. Xbox console and Windows PC versions are also not interchangeable by default. Confirm the platform shown on the game’s store page and the region associated with your account before buying or assuming that an entitlement covers another device.

When an Ultimate subscription is inactive, subscription-linked cloud gaming, perks and included partner services are removed along with Game Pass access. Purchasing one game does not recreate those broader benefits.

What to check on the day access ends
- Check the subscription end date. In your Microsoft account or Xbox subscription settings, verify whether the paid period has actually ended. A recurring-billing cancellation should still show an active end date until that date arrives.
- Check the title’s catalog status. If the game left the catalog, renewing may not restore it. Look at the current Game Pass listing for your plan, region and platform.
- Confirm which account owns the entitlement. Launch the game while signed in to the Microsoft account and gamertag that held the subscription or made the purchase. A different account can make an owned copy appear unavailable.
- Identify whether you downloaded or bought it. An installation from the catalog is subscription access. A completed Microsoft Store purchase is a separate license and should not require buying the same game again.
- Check save support before switching devices. For Play Anywhere titles, use the same gamertag on the compatible Xbox or Windows device. For other games, verify that the title supports the Xbox save system you rely on.
- Choose a valid entitlement. Renew if you want the catalog and subscription features, purchase the game if you want ongoing access to that title, or use a compatible physical disc on a supported console.
Common situations and the correct interpretation
“The icon is still installed, so why will it not start?”
The files and the license are separate. The installation can remain on the drive while the Game Pass entitlement has expired. The launch failure is therefore expected until the account has an active subscription or another license.
“I canceled yesterday and lost access already.”
Check whether the subscription’s paid-through date was yesterday or whether the title was removed from the catalog. Turning off renewal alone should preserve access through the displayed end date; catalog removal can end access independently.
“I bought it later and my progress is missing.”
Verify that the purchase and the original play session use the same Microsoft account and gamertag, and confirm that the title supports the Xbox save method you expected. Play Anywhere progress is designed to follow the gamertag only for participating games; other save systems may not synchronize.
“I renewed, but the game still says I do not own it.”
First distinguish an expired subscription from a removed catalog title. Then verify the plan, region, platform and signed-in account. If the game was purchased, confirm that the purchase was completed rather than only downloaded through Game Pass; those are different entitlements.
The practical takeaway
Expect the downloaded files to remain, but expect the game to become unplayable when the Game Pass entitlement expires. Your saves are not automatically the same thing as your license: supported Play Anywhere and Xbox cloud saves can preserve progress under the same gamertag, while unsupported games may behave differently. Renewing restores subscription access when the title is still included; buying digitally or using a compatible disc supplies a separate ownership route. Always account for catalog removals and the plan, region and platform limits before deciding which option to use.
