It depends on the workflow system and its configured failure policy. A failed task may be retried, routed to a fallback, or cause the overall workflow execution to fail. In some systems, an internal orchestration task can fail while the workflow execution itself stays open. The key is to identify which layer failed and what recovery rules apply.
Does a task failure mean the whole workflow failed?
Not necessarily. “Task” can mean a unit of business work, an internal job used by the orchestration service to advance the workflow, or—in some products—the workflow execution itself. Those failures can have different statuses and recovery behavior.

- Task-attempt failure: A unit of work returns an error or times out. The workflow may retry it or handle the error according to its definition.
- Orchestration-task failure: The service has trouble processing or replaying workflow logic. In Temporal, this leaves the Workflow Execution open and the service automatically retries the Workflow Task.
- Workflow-execution failure: The overall run reaches a terminal failure status. In Temporal, an uncaught workflow or activity failure can close the execution as Failed.
So check the product’s displayed status and the type of failed task before concluding that the business process has stopped.
Does the workflow retry the failed task?
Only if the platform and workflow configuration call for it. Retry rules can specify which errors qualify, the number of attempts, and the delay or backoff between attempts. A timeout can count as a failure: for example, AWS Step Functions reports task timeouts when a task exceeds its configured timeout or an activity misses its heartbeat interval.

AWS Step Functions
By default, when a state reports an unhandled runtime error, Step Functions fails the state machine execution. Task, Parallel, and Map states can define Retry rules to make specified errors eligible for another attempt. Their retry behavior and backoff are configured in the state’s retriers, not assumed for every failure. See AWS Step Functions error handling.
A Task state can also set a timeout and, for activities, a heartbeat interval. If the task or activity worker does not respond within the configured limit, Step Functions marks the workflow execution as failed unless configured handling changes the path. The task’s input and output behavior is part of its state definition. See AWS Task state.

Temporal
Temporal distinguishes a Workflow Task failure from a Workflow Execution failure. When a Workflow Task fails, the execution remains open and the service automatically retries that task. If workflow logic fails, an uncaught activity failure propagates, or the execution is terminated or canceled, the Workflow Execution can close with a Failed status. See Temporal task documentation.

In Step Functions, a state can define a Catch rule that transitions to a named fallback state when an error occurs, including after configured retries are exhausted. The next state receives data according to the workflow’s input/output and catcher configuration; inspect that definition to know what information is passed along.

A fallback is a route for handling an error, not evidence that the original task succeeded. Neither a retry nor a transition to another state guarantees that external side effects from the failed attempt were undone. If a task charged a payment method or sent a message before reporting an error, recovery may need to account for that separately.
Can you resume or restart a failed workflow?
Recovery is product- and workflow-specific. A recovery operation may rerun a failed step within an existing execution or start a new run with a distinct history; those are not interchangeable.

Step Functions redrive
AWS documents redrive for unsuccessful Standard Workflow executions, restarting from the step that failed, was aborted, or timed out. For Task, Parallel, and Inline Map states with configured retries, retry attempt counts reset to zero when the state is rerun on redrive. Check the current eligibility and limits for the specific execution before relying on redrive. See AWS redrive documentation.

Temporal workflow retry policy
If a Temporal Workflow Execution fails and a Workflow Retry Policy is configured, the service can start another run under the same Workflow ID until it succeeds or retries are exhausted. Each run has its own event history, so a new run is not the same event history continuing from the failed execution.

What happens to workflow state and prior work?
There is no general rule that workflow state is rolled back or preserved identically across platforms. In Step Functions, state input is passed through the workflow, and task results can be placed in output; input/output filters and catcher settings affect what the next state receives. Consult the state definition and execution history to see what data was available at each step.
For any orchestrator, distinguish the stored workflow data and event history from changes made outside the orchestrator. A workflow can record an error while a database update, notification, or other external action has already occurred. Design retries and recovery around the possibility that a task may have partially completed.
Quick Recap
What to check after a task fails
- Identify the failure layer. Is it a task attempt, an orchestration task, or the overall workflow execution? Read the status and error details shown by the platform.
- Inspect retry settings. Check which errors qualify, attempt limits, backoff, and whether attempts reset during a recovery operation.
- Check timeouts and heartbeats. Confirm the configured timeout and, for worker-based tasks, whether heartbeat requirements were met.
- Look for a fallback or retry policy. Verify whether an error is caught and where execution is routed, or whether an execution-level retry starts a new run.
- Verify the recovery unit. Determine whether the product can redrive from a step, starts a new run, or requires a new execution—and check applicable workflow-type limits.
- Review state and side effects. Inspect the input, output, error details, and event history, then verify whether external work happened before retrying.
