To try adding a third-party bulb, use the Philips Hue app’s Add devices flow with a Hue Bridge, then select a room and follow the discovery prompts. The flow is documented for Hue products, so it does not guarantee that a third-party bulb will be found. Check the bulb’s exact model and Hue Bridge compatibility: a Zigbee label alone is not enough.
What you need to check first
Before pairing, check the bulb maker’s compatibility statement for the exact model and generation. Look for explicit support for a Philips Hue Bridge, not just a statement that the bulb uses Zigbee. Hue says its own lights communicate over Zigbee or Bluetooth depending on whether a Bridge is used; that describes Hue’s system, not universal support for third-party Zigbee bulbs. - Confirm the exact model and generation, and whether the maker explicitly says it works with a Hue Bridge.
- Check which functions are supported after pairing: on/off, dimming, white temperature, color, and scenes may not all be available.
- Find the maker’s current pairing, reset, and firmware-update instructions. These can differ by bulb.
Add the bulb in the Hue app
- Open Add devices. In the app, go to Home, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Add devices. The alternate route shown in Hue’s UK setup guide is Settings > Devices > +.
- Select a room when prompted, then start the app’s discovery process.
- Follow the app’s pairing prompts. Hue’s instructions describe scanning the QR code on a Hue product. If there is no QR code, choose No QR code to search or enter a serial number. The guide is for setting up Hue bulbs and lamps, so those options do not ensure the app will discover a third-party model. See Philips Hue’s bulb and lamp setup guide.
If the bulb does not appear
First check that the bulb is explicitly compatible with a Hue Bridge and that you are following the bulb maker’s pairing instructions for the precise model. If it has previously been paired to another system, use the maker’s instructions to reset it before trying again. Hue does not provide one universal reset or pairing procedure for third-party bulbs.

A Zigbee logo by itself does not show that the bulb can join the Hue Bridge or be controlled in the Hue app. Check the bulb maker’s current compatibility and firmware information rather than assuming that a reset or repeated search will resolve it.

What to expect from third-party compatibility
Successful pairing does not establish that every feature will work. Controls for dimming, color or white temperature, scenes, firmware updates, and integrations can vary by model. Confirm the specific functions you need with the bulb maker, and do not assume Hue-product feature parity.
One current example to investigate is IKEA KAJPLATS: TechRadar reported on 19 September 2026 that IKEA KAJPLATS smart lights use Zigbee Light Link and can connect to a Hue Bridge for basic Hue app control. That is a secondary report, not official Hue certification or a guarantee for every KAJPLATS SKU or version. Check the exact bulb before buying.

Older Hue Developer Program discussion of Zigbee 3.0 and IKEA TRÅDFRI software compatibility dates from around 2017–2018. It is historical context, not reliable evidence of current compatibility for a particular bulb.
