There is no reliable one-size-fits-all figure for Tesla ownership: your model and trim, location, annual mileage, insurance profile, charging habits, financing, and how long you keep the car all affect the total. Build an estimate from your own quotes and rates, and decide whether you want to measure cash outlay or net cost after resale.
Choose what “total cost” means
For net ownership cost over a set period, add the costs of acquiring and operating the car, then subtract what you expect to receive when you sell it:

Net ownership cost = purchase and transaction costs + financing interest + insurance + charging + maintenance and tires + out-of-warranty repairs + taxes and registration + home charging equipment and installation − estimated resale proceeds.

Divide the result by the number of years or months in your ownership period for an average. This is an estimate, not a prediction of resale value or future repair bills. For a cash-flow budget, list the down payment and scheduled loan payments instead. Do not add loan principal on top of the full purchase price in a net-cost calculation; that counts the same vehicle cost twice.

Estimate charging from your actual driving
Use annual miles, the energy-use estimate for the exact Tesla model and trim, the share of charging done at home, and the applicable electricity rate. If efficiency is stated in kWh per 100 miles, divide by 100 to convert it to kWh per mile.
Estimated annual home charging cost = annual miles × kWh per mile × share of energy charged at home × effective home electricity rate.
Use the marginal rate that applies to added charging, rather than dividing your whole household bill by household kWh. With a time-of-use plan, estimate charging at the hours you expect to use and include any fixed plan fee that is additional to your existing household costs.

Price public charging separately
Do not apply your home rate to Supercharging. Tesla says prices are displayed at the relevant Supercharger pin in the vehicle touchscreen or app; they can vary by site and time, and billing may be per kWh or per minute. Check the current prices at the sites on routes you expect to use rather than relying on a nationwide average. Tesla Supercharger pricing details.
Use charging records to refine the estimate
Tesla Charge Stats can show energy and estimated costs for home, Supercharger, work, and other charging. Home estimates use the utility rate configured in the app; Supercharger costs come from Tesla account billing, while work and other estimates may use regional values that owners can customize. Check those configured rates before treating the totals as actual costs. Tesla Charge Stats information.
Some utilities offer time-based EV tariffs. Tesla describes an Electric Drive Plan for eligible markets in Texas, with a fixed monthly fee for charging during specified hours and other bill components for usage outside those hours. It is an example of a tariff structure, not a generally available Tesla plan; verify current eligibility and terms with the utility. Tesla utility-rate information.

Include the installed cost of home charging
A charger’s purchase price is only part of the cost. Installation may involve permits, inspection, long wiring runs, a panel upgrade, or trenching. Get a quote for your particular parking space and electrical service, and check local utility or government incentives before subtracting any expected rebate. Eligibility and program terms vary. Get insurance quotes for your exact situation
Insurance is personal and location-specific. Before committing to a car, request quotes for the exact model and trim, garaging address, drivers, expected annual mileage, and intended use. Keep coverage limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, and options such as rental reimbursement or roadside assistance consistent across insurers. Compare annual premiums and coverage, not just a monthly teaser amount. Compare vehicles on matching assumptions
A comparison is only useful if it treats each vehicle the same way. Keep these inputs consistent, changing only values that genuinely differ by vehicle or location:
- Ownership period and annual miles.
- Actual purchase price, discounts, taxes, and fees.
- Cash purchase, loan, or lease treatment, including interest and upfront amounts.
- Insurance limits, deductibles, drivers, and included options.
- Home and public charging shares and local electricity prices; for a gasoline vehicle, local fuel prices and realistic fuel economy.
- Maintenance, tires, warranty coverage, and out-of-warranty repairs.
- Resale assumption and whether the result is gross cash outlay or net cost.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center calculator can compare up to eight vehicles using driving habits and vehicle inputs. Treat the result as a structured estimate, not an insurance quote or guaranteed cost. Replace generic assumptions with your transaction price, local electricity rate, mileage, financing, and insurance quotes wherever the calculator allows. DOE AFDC vehicle cost calculator.
Quick Recap
Build your estimate in a worksheet
- Set the scope: choose an ownership period and annual mileage, then decide whether the result is cash flow or net cost after resale.
- Enter acquisition costs: use the actual price for the model and trim, transaction fees, taxes, and expected financing interest. Keep principal from being counted twice.
- Price insurance: collect comparable annual quotes using the same driver, address, coverage, deductibles, mileage, and options.
- Calculate energy: estimate home charging with the formula above, then add public charging using current rates at the sites you expect to use.
- Add upkeep and setup: estimate tires, scheduled maintenance, uncovered repairs, and the installed cost of home charging equipment.
- Add registration and subtract resale: include applicable recurring taxes and fees, then subtract a clearly labeled resale estimate if calculating net cost.
- Annualize or compare: divide by the ownership period and apply the same assumptions to any alternative vehicle.
