A standard in-place Windows 11 feature update is designed to keep your installed apps, personal files, and settings. It is not a wipe-and-reinstall. Some incompatible apps may be removed, and certain optional components may not carry over if Setup cannot obtain the required package. Back up important files before you start.
What a normal Windows 11 feature update keeps
A feature update moves a PC from one Windows 11 release to a newer one. In Microsoft’s description of the in-place upgrade path, existing apps, data, settings, and drivers are preserved. The intended result is to continue using the same Windows installation on the newer release, not to rebuild the PC from scratch. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade guidance and its feature update deployment overview.

That is the normal outcome, not a guarantee that every app or every detail of the interface will be unchanged. A new release can affect app compatibility, driver behavior, defaults, and optional Windows content. The documentation establishes the intended retention path and specific exceptions; it does not promise identical behavior for every configuration.
When apps or optional components can be missing
Apps that block the update or have compatibility problems
Windows Setup can remove an app identified as a blocker or as incompatible with the upgrade. Microsoft’s guidance says a blocked app may be reinstallable afterward; if the concern is that it will not work correctly on the new release, check with the publisher for a compatible version. There is no official removal-rate figure in the cited guidance, so a percentage estimate would be misleading. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance and compatibility guidance for older apps.

If a program is essential for work, confirm support with its publisher and, where practical, test it against the target Windows release before updating. Microsoft recommends regular compatibility testing for business-critical apps in its deployment guidance.
Language resources and Features on Demand
Some language resources and Features on Demand have to be acquired during an in-place update. If Setup cannot find or download the needed package, that optional content may be absent afterward. This dependency matters especially in managed environments, where update sources and package availability can be controlled by an organization. See Microsoft’s Features on Demand deployment guidance.

Feature update versus installation-media setup or clean install
The phrase “Windows update” can describe different operations. A feature update delivered through Windows Update and an in-place upgrade are intended to preserve the existing installation. Booting from installation media or choosing a reset or clean-install path is different: the setup method and the “what to keep” choice determine what remains. Microsoft’s installation-media instructions describe the available retention choices.

Do not assume that media-based setup will preserve everything: check the option shown in Setup before confirming. A clean installation or “Keep nothing” can remove installed apps and personal content.

How to prepare before updating
- Back up important files to a separate location. Microsoft recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version; OneDrive or an external backup device are examples in its backup guidance. An external drive is optional, not a requirement for a routine feature update.
- Identify the operation you are about to run. Confirm whether it is a Windows Update feature update, an installation-media upgrade, a reset, or a clean install. If Setup presents “what to keep” options, verify the selected one before proceeding.
- Check critical apps with their publishers. For business-critical software, verify compatibility with the target Windows release and test it when practical.
- Know what Windows Backup does. Find it at Settings > Accounts > Windows Backup. It can save apps and settings to the cloud for restoration, but it is a separate recovery aid—not a substitute for checking the installation path or keeping a file backup. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup instructions.
If an app or setting is wrong after the update
Check Windows Update and the app publisher for relevant updates if a program or device component behaves unexpectedly. If Setup removed an app, check whether it can be reinstalled and whether the publisher offers a version for the new release. If you are considering rolling back, understand that going back removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then.
Going back to the previous Windows version
Microsoft says the Go back option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, subject to the required recovery files and other conditions remaining available. Personal files are kept, but apps and drivers installed after the update and settings changes made since it are removed or reversed. The 10-day period is Microsoft’s current support guidance, not a guarantee that rollback will be available on every device. See Microsoft’s instructions for going back to a previous Windows version.
