When short-term market rates rise, Circle generally earns more reserve income on the assets backing USDC; when rates fall, it generally earns less. That change affects Circle’s corporate revenue, not an automatic interest payment to ordinary USDC holders. The other major variable is how much USDC is in circulation: growing supply can offset a lower yield, while redemptions can erase part of the benefit from higher rates.
What “USDC reserve interest” means
USDC reserve interest is the income Circle earns by investing the assets that back USDC in circulation. Circle’s SEC filings describe reserve income as depending on two main inputs: the amount of USDC in circulation over a period and the reserve return rate earned on the backing assets.

The simplified relationship is:
Reserve income ≈ average reserve assets × reserve return rate

Holding USDC in a normal wallet does not, by itself, create a claim on that income or pay you an interest rate. A separate exchange, lending service or decentralized-finance application may offer a user-facing yield, but that rate is a different product with its own terms and risks. It should not be confused with Circle’s reserve return.

How market rates reach the USDC reserves
Circle says its reserve income has historically been earned at interest rates close to the prevailing Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) during the applicable periods. Most reserves are held in the Circle Reserve Fund (USDXX), an SEC-registered Rule 2a-7 government money-market fund. The relevant exposure is therefore mainly to short-duration cash and U.S. government instruments rather than to a single long-term bond coupon.
That structure makes the return responsive to changes in short-term rates:
- When policy rates rise: cash and maturing securities can be reinvested at higher rates. As the portfolio turns over, the average reserve return generally increases.
- When policy rates fall: new investments and reinvestments earn less. The average return generally declines as older, higher-yielding holdings mature or are replaced.
- When rates move quickly: the reserve return may not change by exactly the same amount in the same quarter. Portfolio holdings have different maturities, and reinvestment occurs over time.
Because the reserves are largely short duration, rate changes tend to pass through more directly than they would in a portfolio locked into long-term fixed-rate securities. The pass-through is still an average: timing and portfolio composition can leave the reported reserve return above or below the quarterly average SOFR.

| Quarter | Circle reserve-return rate | Quarterly average SOFR |
|---|---|---|
| 1Q24 | 5.13% | 5.31% |
| 2Q24 | 5.17% | 5.32% |
| 3Q24 | 5.11% | 5.28% |
| 4Q24 | 4.49% | 4.68% |
| 1Q25 | 4.16% | 4.33% |
| 2Q25 | 4.14% | 4.32% |
| 3Q25 | 4.15% | 4.33% |
The pattern is consistent with a portfolio whose earnings track short-term market rates: the reserve return was around 5.1% in the first three quarters of 2024, then fell to 4.49% in the fourth quarter and about 4.14% to 4.16% in the first three quarters of 2025. The small gap between each reserve-return figure and average SOFR reflects the fact that Circle earns on its actual reserve portfolio, with its own allocation and reinvestment schedule, rather than receiving SOFR mechanically on every dollar for every day.
The latest figures in this table run through 3Q25. Reserve composition, circulation, regulation and Circle’s revenue mix can change each quarter, so a later quarter requires the corresponding newer filing rather than an assumption that the 3Q25 rate still applies.
Why USDC circulation matters as much as the rate
A rate applies to a balance. If the balance changes, total income can move in the opposite direction from the yield.
- Higher rates with stable circulation: reserve income generally rises because the same average reserve base earns more.
- Lower rates with stable circulation: reserve income generally falls because the same base earns less.
- Higher rates with shrinking circulation: the supply decline can offset some or all of the yield benefit.
- Lower rates with growing circulation: new reserve balances can offset part of the lower return, and in some circumstances total reserve income can still increase.
Circle’s 2025 annual report says interest rates are only one contributor to reserve income and that USDC in circulation is the other primary contributor. It also says circulation is difficult to predict because it depends on end-user and customer behavior. Circle can estimate how a rate move affects the reserve return rate, but it cannot accurately predict the resulting reserve income without knowing how supply and market conditions will change.

Circle’s historical figures illustrate the interaction. Reserve income was $735.9 million in 2022, $1.4 billion in 2023 and $1.7 billion in 2024. Circle reported that approximately $139.9 million of the 2024 increase was attributable to a 9% increase in average daily USDC circulation. The rest of the increase came from yield and other factors, so the annual totals should not be read as a pure measure of rate changes.
How to read different rate-and-supply scenarios
| Short-term rate direction | Average USDC circulation | Likely effect on Circle’s reserve income | What a USDC holder should infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up | Unchanged | Generally higher | No automatic token interest payment |
| Down | Unchanged | Generally lower | The issuer’s reserve return is likely to fall |
| Up | Growing | Higher, with two positive drivers | Supply growth can amplify the rate benefit |
| Down | Growing | Mixed; growth may offset part of the yield decline | Lower rates do not guarantee lower total reserve income |
| Up | Contracting | Mixed; redemptions may offset the yield increase | Higher rates do not guarantee higher total reserve income |
| Down | Contracting | Generally the most negative combination | Both the rate and the reserve base are shrinking |
These are directional scenarios, not forecasts. The result also depends on reserve-asset allocation and the timing of reinvestments.
What a Federal Reserve rate cut does to Circle
A policy-rate cut normally lowers the return available on new short-term investments. As existing holdings mature and proceeds are reinvested, the average reserve return tends to move lower. The effect can appear with a lag because not every asset resets or matures on the day of the policy decision.
A cut therefore puts downward pressure on Circle’s reserve income in two distinct ways only if circulation also falls: first through the lower rate earned on the reserves, and second through a smaller reserve base. If USDC supply expands at the same time, the supply increase can cushion the reduction in yield.

The reverse applies to a rate hike. Higher short-term yields improve the return on reinvested reserves, but a contraction in USDC circulation can limit the increase in total income.
A quantified sensitivity example
Visa’s Economic Empowerment Institute reported Circle’s hypothetical estimate that, holding end-2024 USDC circulation and reserve allocation constant, reducing the average yield from 4.33% by 100 basis points would reduce 2025 reserve income by about $441 million.
A 100-basis-point reduction means moving from 4.33% to 3.33%. The estimate is a scenario, not a forecast. Its fixed-circulation assumption is crucial: if USDC supply grew, the actual decline in total reserve income could be smaller; if supply contracted, it could be larger. The example demonstrates sensitivity to the rate, not a promised outcome for a future year.

Who receives the reserve interest?
Circle records the income earned on the assets backing USDC. Ordinary USDC holders do not receive that reserve return merely for holding the token, and USDC does not become an interest-bearing deposit when market rates rise.

If a platform advertises a yield on USDC, evaluate it separately. The platform may be lending, staking, routing or otherwise using the token under a distinct agreement. Its quoted rate can differ from Circle’s reserve-return rate, and the product may introduce separate eligibility requirements, fees, liquidity limits, counterparty exposure or smart-contract risk. None of those terms can be inferred from Circle’s reserve income.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“USDC is paying me the reserve rate.”
Not by default. The reported 4.15% or 5.13% figures are issuer-average reserve returns for particular quarters. They are not balances credited to every wallet and are not guaranteed APYs for token holders.
“A rate cut immediately removes the old yield.”
Not necessarily. The reserve portfolio turns over over time, so the effect of a policy move can be gradual. The reported quarterly average also reflects the path of rates during the quarter, not just the final central-bank decision.
“A larger USDC supply always means higher reserve income.”
Only if the additional supply more than offsets any decline in the reserve return and other changes. Income is a product of both the reserve base and its average return.
“SOFR and Circle’s reserve return must be identical.”
No. Circle has historically reported returns close to SOFR, but its actual reserve assets, allocation and reinvestment timing determine the realized average.
“Circle’s reserve income equals profit.”
Reserve income is a revenue component. It is not the same thing as net income after operating costs, distribution arrangements, taxes and other expenses.
Quick Recap
How to analyze a new quarter
- Find the quarter’s reported reserve-return rate. Use the issuer’s filing or reserve disclosure for that period, rather than carrying forward an older percentage.
- Compare it with the period’s average SOFR. This shows whether the realized return moved broadly with short-term rates and helps identify timing differences.
- Check average USDC circulation. A larger or smaller supply changes the amount to which the return applies.
- Review reserve composition and maturity information. Changes in the mix of cash and government instruments can affect how quickly market-rate moves appear in reported returns.
- Separate issuer income from user yield. If your question concerns an exchange or DeFi product, read that product’s terms independently; Circle’s reserve-return table does not answer it.
- State the date and scope of every number. A quarterly average, annual total and hypothetical sensitivity are different measurements and should not be blended.
What USDC holders should take away
- Rising short-term rates generally increase the return Circle earns on USDC reserves after portfolio turnover and timing effects.
- Falling short-term rates generally reduce that return as reserves are reinvested at lower yields.
- USDC circulation is equally important to total reserve income and can offset or amplify a rate move.
- Circle’s reserve-return percentages are historical issuer averages, not guaranteed interest for a wallet holder.
- Any yield offered by a separate platform must be evaluated as a separate product.
