1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor SimpliSafe’s current Gen 3 system, losing Wi-Fi and losing household power trigger different backups. If Wi-Fi drops, the Base Station switches to its built-in cellular backup; communication with SimpliSafe’s monitoring center over cellular requires a professional monitoring plan. If electricity fails, the Base Station switches to its rechargeable backup battery, which SimpliSafe says lasts up to 24 hours. The Keypad still works for arming and disarming, but app-based arming and disarming are disabled during the power outage.
What happens when Wi-Fi or internet service goes out?
When the Base Station loses Wi-Fi, it automatically switches to its built-in network backup. SimpliSafe says the Base Station communicates over cellular instead of Wi-Fi when a customer has a professional monitoring plan. This backup concerns the Base Station’s communication path; it does not mean every app feature, camera, or connected device will keep working without internet.

SimpliSafe’s support article, updated September 3, 2026, describes the Wi-Fi and power behavior in its outage guidance. Customers who have had their system since 2019 or earlier may need to update network backup, according to that article.

The Base Station switches to its internal rechargeable battery. SimpliSafe’s current support guidance says the battery can keep it powered for up to 24 hours; that is a maximum stated duration, not a guarantee for every outage or battery condition.
#1 Best Overall
You can still arm or disarm the system at the Keypad while the Base Station is on battery. To conserve that battery, SimpliSafe disables remote arming and disarming through the mobile app during the outage. The company explains this behavior in its Power Outage error guidance, updated September 4, 2026.
What happens to cameras during an outage?
The Base Station’s battery does not power cameras, your router, or other household equipment. Camera behavior therefore depends on whether each camera still has power and Wi-Fi:

- Simple to set up. Seriously secure - Get ready to protect right out of the box. Just plug in the Base Station, follow the steps in the SimpliSafe App, place your sensors and start protecting your home. No wiring or drilling required. Or contact SimpliSafe directly if you need help installing your system.
- Smart home compatible - Arm your system at home with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
- SimpliCam and Video Doorbell Pro live streams require power and Wi-Fi to remain available.
- During the power outage described by SimpliSafe, live streams are unavailable for associated Outdoor Cameras and Smart Alarm Indoor Cameras.
- Recordings made before the outage remain viewable. The support guidance does not establish that new recordings or remote access will continue for every camera model during an outage.
Can you replace the Base Station backup batteries?
SimpliSafe’s current power-outage troubleshooting instructions specify four 1.2V, 1300 mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries. Do not substitute ordinary alkaline batteries. SimpliSafe recommends contacting its support team if the batteries need changing; if an outage lasts beyond 24 hours, its Wi-Fi and power article says rechargeable replacements may be used.

Check your system generation and confirm battery compatibility with SimpliSafe before buying or replacing batteries. The Gen 3 Base Station guide can help identify the current system, but do not assume its specifications apply to older units.

Will SimpliSafe notify you when power fails?
The Base Station can add a power-outage event to the system timeline. If push notifications are enabled, users can receive alerts when power goes out and when it is restored. SimpliSafe explains how to enable them in its push-notification setup instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this apply to older SimpliSafe systems?
No single battery-runtime figure should be applied to every generation. Current SimpliSafe guidance for Gen 3 says up to 24 hours, while an older SimpliSafe owner manual states an eight-hour backup duration. The older figure is historical guidance, not the current Gen 3 specification. If you do not know which system you own, identify the Base Station generation and check its documentation before relying on a runtime or network-backup claim.

For context, SimpliSafe’s older owner manual contains the historical eight-hour figure, while its Gen 3 guide covers the current Base Station generation.
