How to Compare Cement Stocks Using Valuation, Debt, and Dividend Metrics

A practical framework for comparing cement shares: align periods and business mix, then weigh valuation multiples against debt, cash generation, dividends, and operating risks.

Compare cement stocks by lining up the same reporting period and business scope, then assess valuation, debt, cash generation, and dividend capacity together. A low P/E or a high yield is not enough to establish that a share is cheap or its dividend sustainable: cement companies can differ in business mix, geography, financing, and exposure to fuel, freight, and project costs.

Start with comparable companies and periods

Define the peer set and quote date

Choose listed companies with reasonably comparable operations and record the share-price date, currency, and financial period used for each ratio. A cement-company label does not guarantee the same business mix. Siam City Cement, for example, reports cement and clinker alongside ready-mix concrete, building materials, energy, and waste-management activities. The Stock Exchange of Thailand factsheet provides an example of the range of market and operating measures available for one issuer, not a sector benchmark.

Align fiscal periods and reporting scope

Use the same period length and compare consolidated figures with consolidated figures, or standalone with standalone. ACC and Ambuja disclose that FY 2022-23 covered 15 months following a fiscal-year change; comparing that directly with a standard 12-month year can distort revenue, earnings, and ratios. Check annual reports and results for period changes before drawing conclusions. ACC annual reports; Ambuja annual reports.

Use valuation ratios as a set, not a verdict

Measure What it compares How to use it
P/E Share price relative to earnings per share Useful for relating market price to reported profit, but affected by financing costs and taxes. Confirm that earnings cover comparable periods and are not unusually elevated or depressed.
EV/EBITDA Enterprise value relative to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization Can help compare operating businesses with different financing structures, but must be considered alongside debt, capital needs, and cash flow.
P/BV Market value relative to book equity Additional context on how the market values reported equity; not a standalone measure of operating quality or fair value.

For a dated illustration, the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s Siam City Cement factsheet showed market capitalization of THB 45,296.00 million, enterprise value of THB 68,831.10 million, EBITDA of THB 6,878.11 million, EV/EBITDA of 5.64, P/E of 10.94, and P/BV of 1.35 as of 6 October 2026. Those figures describe one issuer on one date; they are not current quotes for other companies or a cement-sector valuation range. SET Siam City Cement factsheet.

Put debt and liquidity beside the valuation

Check gross debt, cash and cash equivalents, net debt or net cash, upcoming maturities, and interest burden. Debt relative to operating earnings can help show whether a company has room to service borrowings, but assess it with cash generation and investment requirements rather than as an isolated cutoff. A debt-free balance sheet can lower financing risk; it does not by itself make a share inexpensive or predict future returns.

Company disclosures illustrate why figures need their reporting year attached. ACC reported zero debt and cash and cash equivalents of ₹918 crore in FY 2025-26. Its FY 2024-25 report instead reported cash and cash equivalents of ₹3,593 crore and net worth of ₹18,271 crore. Ambuja reported debt-free status in FY 2025-26. These are issuer-reported snapshots from different companies and periods, not a synchronized balance-sheet comparison. ACC annual reports; Ambuja annual reports.

Test whether earnings and cash support the dividend

Record dividend per share, payout ratio, cash-flow coverage, and the share price used to calculate yield. Yield is dividend per share divided by share price; it can rise simply because the share price falls. A payout ratio shows the share of earnings distributed, but should be read alongside cash generation, debt obligations, and planned investment. A declared or recommended dividend is not a guarantee of future payments.

ACC reported a proposed ₹7.5 dividend per share and a 6% payout ratio for FY 2024-25. For FY 2025-26, ACC reported a 7% payout ratio. Ambuja recommended a ₹2 final dividend per share for FY 2025-26. These company-reported figures cover different periods and are not a direct same-year comparison. The cited figures do not provide a synchronized share-price basis for calculating comparable yields. Connect ratios to operating risks

Cement earnings can move with power and fuel costs, freight, raw-material availability, energy security, capacity investment, and local market conditions. These factors can affect margins, cash available for debt service, and the room to maintain a dividend. ACC identifies fuel and raw-material security, natural-resource availability, energy security, and project execution among its risks. Ambuja discusses commodity, foreign-exchange, and interest-rate volatility. Read the risk disclosures in context with the company’s operating results rather than treating a valuation multiple as a complete explanation of future performance. Build a repeatable comparison

  1. Set the basis: record each company’s exchange, quote date, currency, financial period, and consolidated or standalone scope.
  2. Check the business: note geographic exposure, integrated operations, and ancillary businesses that could make peers less comparable.
  3. Compare valuation: use P/E and EV/EBITDA together, with P/BV as context. Verify the underlying earnings period and market data date.
  4. Assess balance-sheet capacity: place debt, cash, maturities, and interest burden beside operating earnings and cash generation.
  5. Evaluate the dividend: examine payout, cash coverage, and the price used for yield; distinguish a recommendation from a completed payment.
  6. Read the risks: consider energy, raw materials, freight, financing, and execution risks that may change margins or capital demands.
  7. Verify primary disclosures: use issuer reports and results for financial statements, debt, dividends, and risks; use exchange or market-data factsheets for price-derived ratios. Dangote Cement’s investor-relations page links its reports, results, share information, and debt information. Dangote Cement investor relations.

The available company examples do not form a synchronized valuation screen, so they cannot support a reliable league table or identify a single best-value cement stock. Refresh market-price-based ratios for the same date and use each issuer’s latest comparable financial disclosures before making a decision.
