1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo reduce dependence on Google Ads while keeping access to people actively searching, test Microsoft Search first for general search demand. If you sell products through a marketplace, test Amazon Ads separately against product-discovery goals. Move a bounded portion of spend, verify tracking, and scale only if the additional channel delivers qualified business results at acceptable economics. Neither option should be assumed to replace all of Google’s reach.
What counts as a real alternative to Google search ads?
A useful diversification channel should reach people with intent comparable to the Google campaigns you want to rebalance. That is different from adding another advertising platform simply to spread budget across more logos.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2025 proposed decision found Microsoft to be the strongest alternative among traditional general-search providers, while emphasizing that its constraint on Google was limited, particularly because of its smaller scale. The CMA also found specialized search providers to be limited alternatives overall, although Amazon may be more relevant for shopping ads. The decision concerns the UK market and is not an account-level forecast for other countries or advertisers.
The CMA did not consider display and social effective alternatives to Google search advertising; respondents generally viewed search and display as complementary. Those channels can still be valuable for awareness, retargeting, or other objectives, but should not be counted as like-for-like search replacements unless your own results demonstrate comparable intent and outcomes.

Which channel should you test?
| Channel | Audience and intent | Reach and fit | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Search | People searching for products, services, or information related to your business; closest broad-search comparison in this plan. | Microsoft says ads can appear on Bing and partner sites. Its scale is smaller than Google’s according to the CMA’s UK 2025 proposed decision; account-level eligible reach is not stated (CMA, 2025). Actual distribution can depend on market and campaign settings. | Qualified conversions, value, CPA, ROAS, search-term quality, placements, and incremental reach. |
| Amazon Ads | Shoppers searching for products in a marketplace context. | Potentially relevant to retailers selling products where Amazon product discovery matters. It is not a general web-search substitute across categories; account-level reach is not stated (CMA, 2025). | Product-related conversions, revenue or contribution value, acquisition cost, and whether marketplace activity adds customers or sales. |
| Display and social | Often discovery, awareness, or audience-based exposure rather than an equivalent active-search moment. | The CMA’s UK 2025 proposed decision did not find these effective alternatives to Google search advertising. Use them for their own objectives unless your measured results establish a comparable role. | Metrics aligned to the campaign objective; do not treat impressions or engagement as replacement search conversions. |
Start with Microsoft for broad search demand
Microsoft Advertising is the first channel to evaluate when the goal is to reach people using general search. Microsoft describes Search ads as reaching people as they search for relevant products, services, or information. Ads may run on Bing and partner properties, so inspect available distribution controls and placement reporting in your account rather than assuming every impression comes from Bing.
Microsoft’s product page presents US desktop figures based on Comscore qSearch, Explicit Core Search, March 2023: 6.4 billion monthly PC searches, 109 million unique PC users, and 38.1% PC market share. These are vendor-presented, US/PC-specific figures, not current total-search-market reach or a forecast for your target geography. Use your own account’s eligible reach and delivery to judge scale.
Use Amazon only when marketplace product intent fits
For an ecommerce retailer, Amazon can be a relevant separate test if customers discover or buy the products through that marketplace. Judge it against product-related objectives and economics, not as a substitute for general web searches, local-service queries, or every Google Shopping campaign.

How to run a controlled diversification test
-
Map where your dependence sits
Break Google spend, conversions, conversion value, and acquisition by campaign and objective. Identify campaigns that rely heavily on one query type, placement, geography, or customer acquisition route. This shows which slice is feasible to compare elsewhere without treating all Google spend as interchangeable.
-
Select one comparable audience and objective
For broad search intent, begin with Microsoft Search. If you are a product retailer, define a separate Amazon test for marketplace product discovery. Keep social and display budgets in their own objective categories unless your business evidence shows that they deliver the same need and outcomes.
-
Set the pilot boundaries before launch
Write down the budget cap, target geography, campaign scope, conversion definition, and decision date. Microsoft documents daily budgets, but its API guidance describes a budget as a target: actual spend can be higher or lower. Confirm the current account controls and monitor spend during the test instead of treating a daily budget as a guaranteed hard limit.
-
Import as a starting point, then audit
Microsoft supports importing Google campaigns. Review the imported settings before enabling them: bids, budgets, match types, targeting, exclusions, ad copy, landing pages, tracking, conversion goals, and distribution settings. An import can save setup time; it does not prove that the campaign is appropriate for a different network or optimized for its audience.

Validate conversion measurement
Use consistent conversion definitions where possible, and reconcile platform reporting with the business’s source of truth. Check that tags and goals fire correctly, that conversion value is assigned as intended, and that offline outcomes are included if they matter to the business. Do not scale on a reporting setup you have not tested.
Microsoft’s bid-strategy guidance requires conversion tracking through a UET tag and conversion goal for Maximize Conversions; offline conversions are also supported. Microsoft says optimization stops if a campaign falls below 30 conversions over any 30-day period. That is platform guidance for this strategy, not a universal statistical threshold. If your campaign does not meet its stated prerequisites, avoid relying on automated bidding as though they were satisfied.
-
Compare incremental business value
Assess qualified conversions, revenue or conversion value, CPA, ROAS, search-term quality, placement quality, and operational effort. Where attribution differs between platforms, compare against a consistent business definition and account for overlap, learning time, and the work needed to manage another channel. Platform-reported ROAS alone may not show whether the channel added customers or merely claimed credit for conversions that would have happened anyway.
-
Expand only when the test earns more budget
Increase investment only when the channel adds qualified conversions or value at acceptable economics and the result is durable enough for your decision. If the test brings reach but not valuable outcomes, revise targeting or keep the channel limited rather than moving more Google budget by default.

How does Google’s 2026–27 campaign transition affect diversification?
Budget diversification and Google campaign migration are related planning tasks, but one does not replace the other. Google’s June 11, 2026 update says auto-upgrades for campaigns using automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match continue starting in September 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that start date has passed; check account-specific notices to see whether an upgrade has occurred or is pending. Google says Dynamic Search Ads will sunset and auto-upgrades will begin in February 2027, so review affected campaigns ahead of that transition.
Google also reports that, for non-retail advertisers, AI Max’s full feature suite averaged 7% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS than search-term matching alone, based on Google internal data from 2026. This is a Google-reported result, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for an individual account. Consider it in the context of your own campaign goals and test outcomes; it does not establish that concentrating spend in Google is preferable.
What should the final channel decision be based on?
Choose the channel that adds qualified demand at acceptable economics, not the one that merely has the most familiar interface or the most impressions. Microsoft is the most direct broad-search test in this plan; Amazon is a narrower option for marketplace product intent. Their role and attainable scale depend on geography, audience, inventory, settings, measurement, and your own results. Keep the pilot bounded until those results show what additional budget can deliver.
