What Happens to Pending Orders, Stop-Losses and SIPs When the Indian Stock Market Is Closed?

When an Indian equity exchange is closed, no regular stock order can match. A pending order may wait for the next tradable session or expire, depending on its validity and broker rules. A stop-loss cannot execute during the closure; if the market reopens beyond its trigger, the fill can be far from the trigger price. A mutual-fund SIP follows business-day, payment-availability, mandate and NAV cut-off rules, not ordinary stock-market hours.

This explanation applies primarily to NSE equity trading and Indian mutual-fund processing. Your broker, fund platform and asset-management company can impose operational rules that determine the final status of a particular instruction.

What “market closed” means on NSE

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) states that equities trading takes place on all days except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays declared by the exchange in advance. For 2026, the regular NSE equity session is published as 09:15 to 15:30, with a pre-open session before regular trading.

During a closure there is no regular equity session in which orders can be matched. An app may still let you enter an instruction, display an order as pending, or accept an after-hours request. Those interface actions do not mean that a trade has occurred. The order must reach a tradable session and satisfy the exchange, broker, price and quantity conditions before execution.

Closures can be scheduled holidays, weekends, or an interval outside the regular session. A pre-open session is also different from continuous trading: an instruction accepted for pre-open may be handled under that session’s rules rather than matched immediately at 09:15.

Pending equity orders: held, rejected or expired

What happens during the closure

A normal equity order cannot be matched while the exchange is closed. A broker can either reject an outside-hours submission, accept it for a later session, or place it in a queue subject to its stated rules. The order-status screen—not the fact that the app accepted your tap—is the authoritative indication of whether the instruction is active.

Even when an order is queued, its price is not frozen in the economic sense. At the next session, the order competes with other orders and the market may open at a different level. A limit order can remain unfilled if the market never reaches its limit; a market order is exposed to the prices available when it is released. The exact treatment of an outside-hours market order is broker-specific, so read the provider’s order-type description.

Validity determines whether it survives

Validity or instruction What closure usually means What to verify
Day order It is valid only for the permitted trading day. If that day ends without execution, the exchange or broker can cancel it; it does not automatically become a fresh order on the next day. Whether the broker treats an after-hours entry as a next-session day order and when the validity clock starts.
Immediate-or-cancel (IOC) It must be executed, in whole or in part, as soon as it is eligible; any unfilled quantity is cancelled. An IOC entered while the exchange is closed cannot obtain an immediate match. Whether the platform rejects it outright outside the session or records it as cancelled rather than queued.
Longer-validity or carry-forward instruction It can remain active across sessions if the broker and exchange product support that validity. A holiday normally consumes no trading session, but the provider’s expiry convention controls. The expiry date, number of permitted sessions, required revalidation and any price-band or corporate-action adjustments.

“Carry-forward” is not a universal feature. Some brokers require you to recreate an order after a session ends; others support a longer-validity product with its own conditions. Never assume that a pending label means the order will still be present after a holiday.

How to check a pending order before a holiday

  1. Open the broker’s order book and record the order ID, side, quantity, price, product type and current status.
  2. Read the displayed validity field: day, IOC or the named longer-validity option. Note the expiry date if one is shown.
  3. Check whether the broker accepts after-hours orders for that security and whether they are queued for the next session, sent to a pre-open session, or rejected.
  4. Before the next open, confirm that the order is still active, that the quantity has not been partly filled, and that any price or validity adjustment is visible.
  5. If the order is absent or cancelled, submit a new instruction only after confirming that the original cannot still execute. This avoids accidental duplicate orders.

Stop-loss orders overnight and on holidays

A stop-loss needs a live threshold event

NSE defines a stop-loss price or order as one that lets a trading member place an order that “gets activated only when the market price of the relevant security reaches or crosses a threshold price.” While the exchange is closed, there is no live session in which that threshold can activate an execution. News, indicative prices or an overseas market move may change expectations, but they do not themselves execute an NSE stop-loss.

When trading resumes, the first tradable prices are evaluated under the stop-loss order’s rules. The trigger price is an activation condition, not a promise that the trade will occur at that number. Once activated, the resulting order is handled according to its order type, available liquidity and applicable price limits.

Why a gap can produce a very different fill

Suppose a sell stop-loss has a trigger at ₹100 and the exchange is closed. If the first executable prices after a holiday are ₹92, the threshold has been crossed, but there may be no opportunity to sell at ₹100. The order can execute at an available price around the reopened market, subject to the instruction’s type and market conditions. A gap in the opposite direction can also leave the order untriggered until the relevant threshold is reached.

Situation at the next tradable session Likely consequence Risk to understand
Opening prices remain on the safe side of the trigger The stop-loss remains inactive. A later move can still trigger it; the original trigger does not guarantee protection for the entire closure.
Opening price crosses the trigger The stop-loss can activate when the session processes that price. The execution price can be materially different from the trigger because of the gap and available liquidity.
Price touches the trigger briefly with little liquidity The order may activate but fill partially or at several prices, depending on the resulting order and market depth. Activation and completion are separate events.
Broker does not carry the stop-loss forward The instruction can be cancelled at the end of its permitted session. No protection exists unless you confirm the status and recreate it where allowed.

Carry-forward and recreation are broker-specific

Some platforms keep a stop-loss instruction active across a non-trading day; others cancel it with the session. The exchange definition establishes how activation works, but it does not make every broker’s overnight policy identical. Check whether the stop-loss is valid for one day, whether it is carried to the next session, and whether the broker requires a fresh trigger after an expiry or corporate action.

Before a long weekend or holiday, verify both the trigger and the order’s validity. If you replace a cancelled instruction, confirm that the old order is actually cancelled first. Creating a replacement while the original remains active can leave two protective orders in the book.

SIPs and mutual-fund orders follow different clocks

A SIP is not an equity-session order

A systematic investment plan (SIP) is a periodic mutual-fund investment instruction. Its debit date, fund-order date and NAV date can be different. Processing depends on the payment mandate, when money is available for utilisation, the fund’s business-day calendar, the platform or asset-management company’s rules, and the applicable cut-off time.

A stock-market holiday therefore does not automatically mean that a SIP is cancelled. Depending on the scheme and mandate, the debit or order can move to the next applicable business day, remain scheduled for another permitted date, or be skipped under a platform-specific holiday rule. The instruction’s status and the mandate terms determine which outcome applies.

Business day and NAV cut-off are separate concepts

SEBI’s mutual-fund framework explains that a business day excludes a day on which the relevant money markets are closed or otherwise inaccessible. A calendar date can therefore be a weekday but not a business day for the transaction.

SEBI describes cut-off timing as the outer limit relevant to determining the NAV applied to an investor’s transaction. For most mutual-fund purchases, SEBI’s 2025 explanation says the closing NAV of the day on which funds are available for utilisation applies, subject to the cut-off provisions. The decisive event is not simply when you press “Invest”; it is when the fund can use the money and whether the order meets that scheme’s rules.

Published NSE MFSS cut-offs

NSE MFSS purchase category Published cut-off How to interpret it
Liquid schemes 13:00 An NSE MFSS platform cut-off for purchases in this category; it is not the NSE equity closing time.
Non-liquid schemes 14:30 An NSE MFSS platform cut-off for purchases in this category; the fund’s business-day and money-availability rules still apply.

These times come from the current NSE MFSS help information and should not be assumed to apply to every distributor, AMC, scheme or payment rail. They are also not the same as the 09:15–15:30 NSE equity session.

What a holiday can change

  • Debit date: Your bank mandate may attempt the debit on the scheduled date, the next working day, or another date defined in the mandate.
  • Funds-available date: A payment that is initiated before a holiday may not be usable by the fund until a later business day.
  • NAV date: The applicable closing NAV can move to the business day on which the money is available and the order is valid.
  • Child-order status: A platform may show individual SIP instalments as child-orders and may offer separate status or bulk-cancellation controls.
  • Skip or retry rule: Some mandates retry a failed debit; others treat a holiday or failed collection as a skipped instalment. The provider’s terms govern.

Two timelines that are easy to confuse

Equity order around a holiday

  1. You enter a stock order after the NSE session has ended or during a holiday.
  2. The broker either rejects it or records it for a future session, according to its after-hours policy.
  3. On the next eligible session, the order is released only if its validity still permits execution.
  4. The market price, liquidity and opening conditions determine whether it fills, partly fills or remains pending.
  5. If its validity ends without a fill, it expires or is cancelled rather than silently becoming a new order.

Mutual-fund SIP around a holiday

  1. The SIP schedule creates an instalment and the payment mandate attempts collection under its own calendar.
  2. The fund or platform checks whether the date is a business day and whether money is available for utilisation.
  3. The order is tested against the relevant cut-off and scheme rules.
  4. The applicable closing NAV is determined for the valid business day, subject to the cut-off provisions.
  5. The platform reports the child-order result, such as processed, pending, failed, skipped or cancelled.

Because these are separate systems, a day with no NSE stock trading can still be an important processing day for a mutual-fund transaction, and a weekday stock session does not guarantee that a particular SIP receives that day’s NAV.

What to check before relying on an instruction over a closure

  • Order validity: Confirm day, IOC or longer-validity status and the exact expiry convention.
  • After-hours handling: Find out whether the broker queues, rejects or routes the instruction to a pre-open process.
  • Stop-loss carry-forward: Verify whether the trigger remains active after the session and whether recreation is required.
  • Price type: Know whether the instruction is a limit, market or another order type, and what happens after stop activation.
  • Holiday calendar: Check the exchange holiday and the fund’s business-day calendar separately.
  • Payment settlement: Confirm when the mandate will debit and when the fund can use the money.
  • NAV cut-off: Use the specific platform and scheme cut-off, not the NSE equity closing time.
  • Status evidence: Save the order ID, confirmation message and timestamp so you can reconcile the next session.

If the status is not what you expected

Order shows “pending” after the market reopens

Check whether the order is still within its validity, whether the price is reachable, and whether the security is subject to a trading restriction or price band. Do not submit a duplicate until the broker confirms the first order’s state.

Stop-loss is missing

Look for an expiry or cancellation event in the order history and read the broker’s carry-forward rule. If it was cancelled, decide whether a new protective order is appropriate and confirm that no earlier order remains active.

SIP shows delayed, skipped or failed

Compare the scheduled debit date with the bank mandate result, the fund’s business-day calendar and the platform’s cut-off. A holiday, unavailable funds or a failed collection can each create a different status. Ask the platform which business day supplied the NAV and whether the instalment will be retried or must be re-created.

The practical distinction to remember

An exchange closure pauses stock matching; it does not freeze the market at the last traded price or guarantee that every instruction will survive. A stop-loss is a threshold-triggered instruction whose eventual fill can be changed by a gap. A SIP is a mutual-fund transaction governed by business days, money availability, cut-offs and NAV rules. Check the individual provider’s recorded status and terms before assuming that a pending label, trigger price or debit date will carry over unchanged.
