Most PAX demos are temporary show-floor builds, not permanent downloads. When the convention closes, the exhibitor tears down its booth, removes or ships the demo stations, and decides separately what happens to the software. A developer may retire the build, revise it for another event, publish a downloadable demo, or keep it private while using the play session data for development and marketing.
PAX does not impose one rule requiring every game demo to stay online. If you want to play a particular demo after PAX, look for an announcement or download link from that game’s developer or publisher; the event listing alone is not a promise of continued access.

The two things that happen when PAX ends
There are really two separate outcomes: the physical exhibit leaves the convention center, while the game build remains under the control of its owner. PAX’s public materials describe exhibitor logistics and identify demos shown at a particular event, but they do not prescribe a universal after-show life for the software.

The booth is dismantled
After the final expo day, exhibitors enter the scheduled move-out period. The PAX West exhibitor manual identifies GES as the official general contractor and says its Exhibitor Service Center operates during setup, show days, and dismantling. Services include labor, freight, and shipping. A PAX West 2024 exhibitor document likewise schedules dismantling after the last expo day and requires booths and exhibitor materials to be packed and removed by the stated deadlines.

The game build follows a separate decision
The executable running on a booth PC or console belongs to the developer or publisher. PAX can set rules for the hall and the move-out process, but it does not publish a rule saying that every playable build must be uploaded, preserved, or deleted. That is why two games shown at the same convention can have completely different post-PAX outcomes.
What happens to the demo PCs, consoles, and displays?
The equipment normally leaves the show floor with the exhibitor, its contractor, or a freight carrier. It is not left behind as a public gaming station once the expo closes.
Move-out is scheduled, not informal
PAX East’s 2026 rules require an exhibit to be completely dismantled and packed before the exhibitor returns its Material Handling Agreement to the Freeman Service Desk. The rules allow freight to be hand-carried or shipped, with pieces labeled for their destination. PAX Unplugged’s 2024 manual also specifies move-out hours and requires all equipment and exhibit materials to be removed from the floor by the deadline.
Where the hardware can go
- Hand carry: Small or valuable items can leave with staff, subject to the venue’s move-out procedures.
- Outbound freight: Larger booths, monitors, cabinets, networking gear, and furniture can be packed, labeled, and collected by a carrier.
- Return to an office or studio: The equipment may go back to the developer, publisher, rental company, or production contractor.
- Reuse at another event: A complete station can be shipped onward if the team has another show scheduled.
Those logistics explain why a visitor cannot usually return on the final evening and keep playing after the hall closes: the station is being inventoried, packed, and moved according to the exhibitor’s deadline.
Does the PAX demo disappear online?
Sometimes, but not always. There is no authoritative percentage showing how many PAX demos remain available after a show, and PAX does not guarantee online access. The owner chooses an outcome that fits the build’s purpose, technical state, release plan, and marketing schedule.

| Possible outcome | What it means for players | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|
| Retired after PAX | The show-floor build is turned off and no public download appears. | The demo was a controlled preview, used unfinished assets, or was tied to event hardware. |
| Revised for another event | A later convention may show a different version, sometimes with new content or a shorter route. | The team wants to incorporate feedback or tailor the build to another audience. |
| Released publicly | A downloadable demo appears on a store page or through the developer’s own channel. | The build is stable enough for wider testing or promotion. |
| Kept as a private test build | Players may see footage or hear impressions, but cannot download the executable. | The developer wants controlled feedback, avoids spoilers, or is protecting unreleased content. |
A PAX expo-hall page describes demos as games exhibitors share for that particular show and warns that its list is not complete. That wording is consistent with a time-limited presentation, not a promise that each listing becomes a permanent online demo.
Why a show-floor build may not be ready for public release
A convention demo is often engineered for a narrow, supervised situation. Staff can reset it, explain controls, work around a known bug, and ensure that players use a specific PC or console configuration. Publishing the same files to thousands of unsupervised machines creates different support and security demands.
- Hardware dependence: The build may be tuned to a booth’s graphics card, controller, display, or local network.
- Incomplete content: Placeholder art, temporary dialogue, debug menus, or missing accessibility options can be acceptable in a supervised preview but not in a public download.
- Save and reset design: A show demo may reset automatically after each session and lack the save handling expected of a consumer release.
- Spoiler control: A short route can reveal a set piece or mechanic that the developer does not want distributed before launch.
- Licensing and platform work: Music, middleware, account services, age ratings, and storefront compliance may not yet be cleared for public distribution.
- Patch cadence: The team may prefer to fold feedback into a newer build rather than support an old event snapshot.
Consequently, the absence of a download is not evidence that the demo was lost. It may be a deliberate decision to keep an unstable or highly specific build private.
How to find out whether you can play it after PAX
Use the game’s own channels rather than assuming that a convention listing is a download directory. The following sequence gives you the best chance of finding an authorized version.
- Identify the exact game and exhibitor. Record the title, developer or publisher, platform shown, and PAX edition. Similar names and multiple builds can otherwise lead to the wrong page.
- Check the official store page. Look for a clearly labeled demo, playtest, or download button. A store page may appear before the convention and receive a link only after the team confirms that the public build is ready.
- Read the developer’s post-show announcement. Developers often publish availability, changes, or a decision to keep the build private through their official website or social account.
- Join the stated mailing list or sign-up form. If staff collected email addresses or playtester registrations, that channel may deliver a later test invitation instead of an immediate download.
- Look for an updated version, not necessarily the identical build. A public demo may incorporate fixes or content changes, so its version number, length, and graphics can differ from what you played at PAX.
- Respect access limits. Do not download an unofficial mirror of a build that the owner has not released. Event files can contain unfinished assets, personal data, or software that was licensed only for the show.
If none of these channels offers access, the most accurate conclusion is that no public post-PAX version has been announced. It does not establish that the project was canceled or that the files were destroyed.

How developers use a PAX demo after the event
The playable build can continue to generate value even when it never becomes a public download. The convention may be one step in a longer feedback and audience-building process.
Feedback and iteration
Face-to-face sessions reveal where players get confused, which controls feel natural, and where the pacing loses attention. A team can shorten, expand, or rework the route before the next event or release. Changes made afterward may mean that the original PAX build is intentionally retired.
Footage and creator coverage
Visitors, press, and video creators can produce screenshots, previews, and gameplay footage. The developer can use that material in announcements while keeping the executable under controlled access.
Wishlists, sign-ups, and longer-term leads
A Game Developer interview with a PAX Australia exhibitor describes releasing a trailer or demo before the show so visitors had a way to act after playing, and emphasizes nurturing relationships and leads after the event. In a separate first-person developer account, the team shortened its PAX demo, directed interested players to a longer Steam demo, and used the event to collect footage, playtester sign-ups, and wishlists. Those accounts illustrate developer practice; they are not requirements imposed by PAX.
Press and business follow-up
Exhibitors may use appointments and conversations to arrange interviews, gather publisher or platform interest, and schedule later demonstrations. A private build can therefore remain useful long after the booth has been packed.

A PAX build is not automatically the same as a public demo
| Feature | Show-floor PAX build | Public downloadable demo |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Visitors in a supervised booth session | Anyone who meets the platform’s access requirements |
| Session design | Often short, resettable, and guided by staff | Designed for unsupervised play, installation, and replay |
| Hardware | Known booth PCs, consoles, controllers, and displays | Unknown player hardware and operating environments |
| Version | Can be a special event snapshot | May be patched, rebalanced, or materially different |
| Availability | Ends with the event’s physical schedule | Continues only while the owner and platform host it |
When a developer says a demo is available after PAX, verify whether it is the same build, a longer build, or a later revision. The word demo covers all three in ordinary announcements.
What to expect if you missed the convention
Missing the show does not guarantee that you missed the only playable version, but it also does not create a right to access it later. Developers decide whether the benefit of a public release outweighs support, spoiler, and production concerns.
- Search by the game’s exact title and the PAX edition, because event pages may list only a subset of exhibitors.
- Watch for a public playtest or festival demo that replaces the convention build.
- Follow the official store page for a wishlist or notification option even if no demo is listed.
- Read update notes carefully; a later demo may remove the scene or feature you saw at PAX.
- If you contact the developer, ask whether an authorized post-show build exists rather than requesting an unreleased file.
Common misconceptions
“PAX archives every demo.”
Public PAX materials document exhibitors and event operations, not a permanent software archive. A listing confirms that an exhibitor shared a game at that show; it does not confirm that the executable is preserved for download.
“The booth PC is donated or abandoned.”
Move-out rules require equipment and exhibit materials to be dismantled, packed, and removed. Hardware normally returns with the exhibitor, contractor, rental company, or freight carrier.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“A trailer means the demo is downloadable.”
A trailer can promote a project without distributing its build. Check for an explicit download, playtest invitation, or store listing.
Best Value
“No download means the game was canceled.”
Non-release proves only that no public access has been announced through the channels you checked. The team may still be iterating privately or preparing a later version.
What exhibitors should decide before leaving the floor
For a developer, the post-show plan is easier if it is chosen before teardown. A practical checklist is:
- Choose whether the event build will be retired, retained internally, revised, or converted into a public demo.
- Back up analytics, player comments, recordings, bug reports, and sign-up data before equipment is shipped.
- Tell visitors where to follow the project: a store wishlist, mailing list, playtest form, or announcement page.
- Label and inventory PCs, consoles, displays, controllers, and storage media for hand carry or freight.
- Remove credentials, local accounts, debug tools, and personal data from machines leaving the booth.
- Publish a clear post-show message if public access is available, and state when a promised download is only a future possibility.
This separation of software planning from physical move-out prevents a common misunderstanding: packing the booth is mandatory under the venue schedule, while releasing the game is an optional product decision.
Bottom line
When PAX ends, the booth is dismantled and its equipment is carried out or shipped under the event’s move-out rules. The game demo itself has no single PAX-mandated fate. Its developer or publisher may retire it, revise it, publish a public download, or keep it private while using player feedback, footage, wishlists, and sign-ups. Treat every PAX demo as temporary unless the owner separately confirms continued access.
