Discovery on October 6, 2026, and the combined company is called Skydance. According to the Associated Press, the stated plan is to unify the streaming products “into a single service over time.” For subscribers, nothing has been announced about what that service will be called, what it will cost, or when your account would move.
What has actually changed, and what hasn’t
- Done: the acquisition closed on October 6, 2026. Paramount+ and HBO Max are under common ownership.
- Planned: combining the streaming products into one service over time. Reporting on the closing does not say any migration has started.
- Not announced: the new service’s name, price, launch date, account and billing transition, and country-by-country rollout. The AP reports that the effects on price and consumer choice are unknown.
So the accurate shorthand is “common ownership with a plan to unify,” not “the apps have merged.” Keep using your current subscriptions as normal until the company publishes account instructions.

Will HBO still be HBO?
David Ellison, the CEO, said in an earlier statement reported by the AP: “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” He went on: “They built a phenomenal brand, they are a leader in this space and we just want them to continue doing more of it. But by bringing the platforms together, all of our content will be able to reach even a broader audience than we can do standalone.”
That is encouraging for the HBO brand, but it is a stated viewpoint, not a product commitment. It doesn’t tell you whether HBO Max will survive as a separate app, become a tier or hub inside a larger service, or keep its name in the long run. Those details haven’t been published.

Other services in the portfolio
The deal reaches beyond these two apps. The AP reports that Discovery+ was acquired along with Warner Bros. Discovery, and it lists Pluto TV and BET+ among Paramount’s services alongside Paramount+. The coverage doesn’t say what happens to any of them, so don’t assume they will be folded in, kept, or shut down.
Will I have to pay for both?
Today, yes: they remain separate subscriptions with separate billing. Whether a combined service will cost less than the two together, more, or sit alongside cheaper tiers is unknown, and nobody has credibly reported it. Any prediction of savings or price hikes would be speculation.

How big is the combined streaming business?
The AP, citing the analytics firm JustWatch, reported in 2026 that Paramount+ and HBO Max together hold roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, compared with 17% for Amazon Prime and 19% for Netflix. Treat this as a rough scale comparison from a third-party tracker as reported by the AP. It is not an audited subscriber count, and it says nothing about whether the merger will change prices or quality. It does suggest why the owners want a combined service: together the two still trail the two largest rivals.

Until details arrive, you can make the decision on what you watch rather than on merger news. Check these four things:

- Price and plan limits. Compare the confirmed monthly cost once any new plan is announced.
- Your must-watch shows and films. Confirm they are on the service you’re paying for now, and re-check when a combined catalog is announced.
- Ads versus ad-free. Look at what each tier includes, plus simultaneous-stream and download limits.
- Account and billing instructions. Wait for the companies’ official notices on how existing subscribers move over, including whether viewing history and profiles carry across.
Month-to-month plans make waiting low-risk. If you are on an annual plan, look at its renewal terms before the integration begins.

- The name of the unified service, and whether HBO Max persists as a separate brand or product during or after integration.
- Launch date and rollout order by country.
- Final pricing and any bundle terms.
- How subscribers, billing and account history will be migrated.
Official announcements from Paramount Skydance and the services’ own help pages are where those answers will appear first. The company’s February 27, 2026 merger announcement framed combining the streaming assets as a strategic goal, but it didn’t settle these consumer details.
