1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: Termux can run Linux userland software through PRoot-Distro, but that is not the same as running Docker Engine, and it does not provide Docker’s normal kernel-backed isolation. If you need actual Docker containers, use a properly configured Linux virtual machine on the phone or connect Termux’s Docker client to a separate Linux host. Neither route guarantees that Android will keep a local process alive indefinitely.
First, decide what you mean by “Docker containers”
There are two different goals that often get conflated: running Linux software on Android, and running Docker Engine with its container runtime. Termux runs on Android’s host operating-system kernel. Installing Ubuntu or Debian inside Termux gives you a Linux userland, not a replacement Linux kernel or real root privileges.
The maintained PRoot-Distro project can install Linux userlands derived from Docker/OCI images and run their userspace software without a Docker daemon. That can suit command-line tools or compatible individual processes. It does not supply Docker Engine’s normal isolation features: PRoot does not provide real root, cgroups, or namespaces, and it generally cannot run a full init or service-supervisor setup.
For the actual Docker Engine, the viable architectural choices are different: run it inside a Linux VM with its own guest kernel, or run it on another Linux machine and control it remotely. Both require more setup than installing a distro under PRoot.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Run Linux software in Termux with PRoot-Distro
Use this route when your real need is a Linux shell, tool, or compatible standalone process—not Docker’s container runtime. The documented quick start installs the PRoot-Distro package, installs an Ubuntu 24.04 userland, and opens its shell:

Commands and software compatibility depend on the selected image and the Android device. PRoot-Distro notes limitations around kernel-dependent functions, real root, filesystem-heavy workloads, and service supervision. Do not treat a successful distro installation as proof that a Docker daemon, nested containers, or a conventional server stack will work.

Keeping an individual process available
PRoot-Distro supports individual long-running processes, but that is not a promise of continuous uptime. Keep the process running in an available Termux session and use the project’s documented process or session controls to manage it. Android’s handling of background work can vary with the device and its settings; the documentation does not establish that a particular process will survive indefinitely or prescribe a universal battery-setting fix. If the process stops, check whether Termux is still running and restart the process or session as appropriate.
If you need Docker Engine, use a VM or another host
Local Linux VM
QEMU is available as an optional emulation route in Termux. In this design, Docker Engine runs inside a Linux guest, against the guest’s Linux kernel—not directly in a PRoot distro. This is an advanced, device-dependent setup. The Termux documentation cited here confirms QEMU availability, but does not validate a turnkey Docker VM procedure, phone performance, or networking behavior across devices. Follow a current VM-specific guide suited to your device before attempting installation.

Remote Docker daemon
If a Linux server or another suitable Linux machine is available, keep Docker Engine there and use a Docker client from the system where the CLI is installed. Docker documents daemon remote-access configuration and contexts for targeting another host. Configure authentication and transport according to Docker’s current security guidance; do not expose an unauthenticated daemon on a TCP port. Docker warns that unauthorized remote access can allow an attacker to compromise the host.

The project packages a Termux environment as an image for an existing Docker or Podman system. Its README requires a configured runtime, so it is useful when you already have a container host and want Termux inside it—not as a way to bootstrap Docker Engine on the phone. The README also describes architecture-specific behavior and possible privilege or seccomp workarounds for some ARM workloads; those are runtime caveats, not evidence that the image supplies a Docker host.

What “keep running” can and cannot mean
There are two separate persistence questions: whether the software can run in the chosen environment, and whether Android keeps that process alive in the background. PRoot-Distro’s documentation allows for individual long-running processes but says full init or service-supervisor arrangements are generally not possible. The official documentation cited here does not establish indefinite background survival for any device, Android version, or Termux configuration.
For a PRoot process, maintain an active Termux session and monitor whether the process remains available. For Docker Engine in a VM, persistence depends on the guest and its lifecycle as well as Android’s handling of the VM process. For a remote daemon, the containers run on the separate host, so Termux’s background lifetime affects the client session rather than the host’s container runtime. In all cases, avoid treating a phone as an always-on server unless you have verified its behavior under your own device, network, and power settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Termux run Docker without root?
Not by installing Docker Engine directly into a PRoot-Distro userland: PRoot does not provide the kernel features and real root privileges that Docker’s normal runtime needs. For Docker Engine, use a Linux VM or a separately configured Linux host.
Is PRoot-Distro the same as Docker?
No. PRoot-Distro runs a Linux userland under PRoot and can use software from OCI-derived images, but it does not run a Docker daemon or provide Docker’s normal kernel-backed isolation.
