What happens when the subscription ends?
When the paid period for your PlayStation Plus subscription ends, you lose access to benefits that depend on the membership, including downloaded monthly games and games accessed through a catalog. Having a game installed on your console does not turn that subscription access into a purchase. Sony’s U.S. games page says monthly games can be played while you have an active membership and that catalog games are available to members of the corresponding plan. The key date is the end of the period you already paid for—not necessarily the day you turn off renewal. Sony’s U.K. cancellation guide says benefits continue until the end of the current paid period and that access to PlayStation Plus benefits is lost once the subscription ends. Your account’s subscription settings are the place to check your own paid-through date; the general guidance does not establish an individual account’s exact expiry date. Cancellation and expiry are different
After you cancel renewal
Cancellation stops the subscription from renewing. It does not, by itself, mean you lose access immediately: benefits remain available for the rest of the period already paid for. If you cancel well before the paid-through date, you can continue using eligible benefits until that date.

After the paid period ends
Once the membership ends, games whose access depends on it are unavailable. Sony’s U.K. support page describes the loss of benefits as applying once the subscription ends, rather than at the moment cancellation is requested. Check your account for the date that applies to you instead of assuming that access ends on the cancellation date.
A simple timeline
- Subscription is active: You can use monthly games and catalog titles covered by your plan while each title remains available.
- Renewal is canceled: Nothing is removed solely because you switched off automatic renewal. Your remaining paid time still applies.
- A catalog removal date arrives: A title can become unavailable even though your membership has days or months left.
- Paid period ends: Membership-dependent games and other benefits stop being available.
- Later resubscription or purchase: Access can return only through a valid entitlement. Resubscribing helps when the title is still in the relevant catalog; buying the game provides a separate purchase entitlement.
Which games are affected?
“PlayStation Plus game” can mean different things. The entitlement behind the game—not whether it is downloaded—is what determines whether it remains available after membership ends.

Plan names and benefits are region-specific, and the catalog can differ by region. Sony’s U.S. support page describes Extra as including Game Catalog access and Premium as including both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Check the plan details and local catalog for your account rather than assuming the same title or benefit is available everywhere. Monthly games versus rotating catalog games
These two benefits are often confused. A monthly game is added to your library as a no-cost membership benefit and remains tied to having an active membership. A Game Catalog or Classics Catalog download is also subscription access, but the title itself may have a specific service end date. In both cases, installing the game does not change the entitlement. The difference is the catalog’s rotating availability: a monthly claim is governed by membership status, while a catalog title is governed by both membership status and whether Sony still offers that title in your region.
A catalog game can leave before your subscription does
Membership expiry is not the only reason a Game Catalog title can become unavailable. Catalogs rotate, and Sony says some games have a published end date when they will be removed from the service. That date can arrive while your membership is still active. In that case, having remaining subscription time does not preserve access to the removed title through the catalog.

Sony says removal dates are publicized ahead of time. To check a particular game, look at the current catalog for your region and any announced end date. The official page does not guarantee that a specific title will remain available for the full length of your subscription. The current PlayStation Plus games page provides catalog information.
What if you resubscribe or buy the game later?
Losing access when membership ends does not mean the game has been deleted from your library or that you must start over. The important distinction is whether you have a current entitlement to play it. If you resubscribe to the relevant plan, subscription access can return for a game that is still included in the applicable catalog. If the title has left the catalog, resubscribing alone does not restore catalog access; you would need another valid entitlement, such as buying the game.
Buying the game separately is different from having downloaded it through a subscription or having bought an add-on for it. Sony says discounted purchases remain yours. A purchase does not depend on continued membership in the same way as a no-cost monthly or catalog download.
What happens to DLC and add-ons?
DLC and add-ons bought for a downloaded catalog game follow the availability of the base game. Sony says they cannot be used if your membership expires or if the game leaves the service. If you resubscribe or buy the game, you can use the DLC again, subject to having access to the base title. The add-on purchase therefore does not, on its own, preserve access to a catalog game. Sony’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ explains the relationship between add-ons and catalog access.
This means an add-on receipt is not a substitute for the base-game license. If a game is removed while your plan remains active, the DLC can be unusable during that gap. If the title later returns to the applicable catalog, or you purchase the base game, Sony says access to the add-on can return.

How to check what applies to your account
- Check the paid-through date. Open your account’s subscription settings and find the current subscription period. Use that date—not the day you canceled renewal—to determine when membership benefits end. The exact date is account-specific.
- Identify how you obtained the game. Work out whether it was claimed as a monthly game, downloaded through a catalog, or purchased separately. The entitlement type, not the installed file, determines whether membership is required.
- Check the applicable plan and regional catalog. Confirm that your plan includes the relevant catalog and that the game is currently offered in your region. Plan benefits and title availability can vary by region.
- Look for an announced removal date. A catalog game may leave before your paid subscription period ends. Check the current catalog listing for the title’s status and any published end date.
- Check the base game before troubleshooting DLC. If an add-on will not work, first confirm that you can access the base game through an active membership, a current catalog listing, or a separate purchase.
Common cases, explained
You canceled, but the paid period is still active
Cancellation alone does not end access immediately. Benefits continue through the already-paid period, unless an individual catalog title is removed from the service during that time.
The game is downloaded, but your membership has expired
A download is not proof of a continuing license. If the game was obtained as a monthly benefit or from a catalog, membership access is required. If you bought it separately, that purchase remains yours.
Your membership is active, but the catalog game is unavailable
Check whether the title has left the regional catalog. A live membership does not guarantee access to a game after its announced removal date.
You can access the game, but its DLC does not work
Check that the base game is still available to you. Sony’s guidance ties use of DLC bought for a catalog download to access to the game through a current membership or separate purchase.
You changed tiers
Check the entitlement required by the title before assuming a tier change has the same effect as cancellation. Extra includes the Game Catalog, while Premium includes the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog in Sony’s U.S. descriptions. A title available under one corresponding plan may not be covered if your current plan does not include that catalog. Regional benefits and catalogs can differ, so verify your account’s local plan details.

What Sony’s guidance does—and does not—establish
Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus pages describe monthly-game access as requiring an active membership and catalog access as depending on the corresponding plan; they also warn that some catalog titles have removal dates. Its U.K. cancellation guide explains that benefits continue until the paid period ends and then become unavailable. These sources establish the general rules, but they do not tell you the expiry date for a particular account or guarantee the future availability of a particular game. For those details, check your account settings and the current catalog in your region.
