If your car becomes disabled, turn on the hazard flashers as soon as you can do so safely, move completely off the roadway if possible, and choose a position approaching drivers can see. If the car has no hazard system, California Driver Handbook guidance says to use the turn signals. Call roadside assistance and, under that California guidance, remain in the vehicle until help arrives. The exact legal requirements for warning devices and waiting outside the vehicle vary by state, road and vehicle type.

What to do in the first few minutes

A breakdown is a traffic hazard before it is a repair problem. Your first objective is to make the stopped vehicle predictable and visible while reducing exposure to moving traffic. Work through these steps in order, changing the order only when remaining in the current position presents a more immediate danger.

  1. Control the vehicle. Keep steering under control, brake smoothly and avoid sudden maneuvers. If the engine still runs, use its remaining power to reach a safer position rather than stopping at the first marginal spot.
  2. Signal the stop. Switch on the emergency flashers as soon as it is safe. They provide a continuous warning that the vehicle is stationary or moving abnormally slowly. If the vehicle is not equipped with emergency flashers, the California DMV says to use the turn signals instead.
  3. Get away from live traffic. Move fully onto a shoulder, pull-off or other area away from traffic when the road and vehicle condition make that possible. Do not trade a safer position for an attempted maneuver that could cause a collision.
  4. Choose visibility if you cannot clear the road. If the car must remain partly or wholly in a traffic lane, stop where approaching drivers can see it from behind. Avoid stopping immediately beyond a hill crest or just around a curve, where drivers have less time to react.
  5. Request help and wait safely. Call your roadside-assistance provider, give a precise location and follow its instructions. California handbook guidance says, “Call for emergency roadside assistance and stay in your vehicle until help arrives.” Treat that as California guidance, not a nationwide rule; follow directions from local emergency services if conditions change.

Which lights should you use?

The signaling choice is primarily determined by the equipment fitted to the vehicle. Do not wait for a perfect location before warning traffic if the car is already stopped in a dangerous place; activate the available signal as soon as operating the controls will not increase the risk.

Vehicle situation Signal to use What it communicates
Emergency flashers are installed and working Turn on the hazard/emergency flashers The vehicle is stopped or presents an unusual hazard in the roadway or shoulder.
No emergency flasher system Use the turn signals, following the cited California DMV guidance Provides the available visual warning when dedicated hazard flashers are absent.
Electrical failure prevents the lights from working Use only warning equipment that can be deployed without entering danger; obtain professional help A dark vehicle is harder to detect, so location and visibility become especially important.

Hazard flashers do not make it safe to remain in a travel lane, and they do not give a disabled car the right of way. They are an alert, not a substitute for moving out of traffic when that can be done safely. Keep them operating while you are waiting if the vehicle’s electrical system permits it.

Where should a disabled car stop?

Position matters as much as the light signal. A shoulder that leaves the vehicle hidden behind a barrier, a hill or a curve may be less protective than a slightly different location that gives approaching drivers a clear view. Use the best available position without attempting a risky relocation.

Road situation Preferred position Visibility concern
Wide paved shoulder or designated pull-off Move fully away from moving lanes and keep as much clearance as the surface safely allows. Do not stop so far behind a barrier, sign or vegetation that approaching drivers cannot see the car.
Narrow shoulder Use the shoulder only if the vehicle can be controlled there; keep the hazard flashers on. Large vehicles may encroach on the shoulder, so a visible, straight section is preferable to a hidden one.
No shoulder or insufficient room Stop in the most visible available position and warn traffic immediately. Avoid the blind side of a hill crest or the exit of a curve.
Bridge, tunnel or construction area Do not make a sudden lane change solely to reach a preferred spot. Follow the space the road safely offers. Walls, equipment and narrow lanes can shorten sight distance; keep signaling and request help.

The California DMV’s instruction to stop where people can see the vehicle from behind is a useful visibility test: imagine a driver approaching at normal speed and ask whether the car is apparent early enough to react. If the answer is no, move only when doing so is clearly safer.

How to call for roadside assistance

Once the car is in the safest position you can reach, contact roadside assistance. A useful call gives the operator enough information to send the right service without requiring you to stand outside and identify the road afterward.

  • State the road name or route and the direction of travel.
  • Describe the nearest exit, intersection, mile marker, rest area or other fixed landmark.
  • Explain whether the car is fully off the road, partly in a lane or blocking traffic.
  • Report the visible problem, such as a flat tire, loss of power or a warning light, without attempting a diagnosis you cannot verify.
  • Tell the operator the vehicle’s color and body type so the responding driver can identify it.
  • Say whether anyone is injured, vulnerable or unable to remain safely inside, and follow the operator’s instructions.

Keep your phone available for a return call. If the vehicle has location sharing or a navigation display, read the displayed position to the operator, but do not handle the phone while the car is moving.

Should you get out of the car?

The cited California guidance is explicit: call for emergency roadside assistance and stay in the vehicle until help arrives. Remaining inside reduces the time you spend exposed to passing traffic. Keep doors closed and seat belts fastened when practical, and watch for instructions from the assistance provider or emergency personnel.

This is not a universal command for every road or hazard. Smoke, fire, flooding, a dangerous cargo leak or another immediate threat may make the vehicle itself unsafe. If you must leave because staying inside is more dangerous, move toward a location away from traffic and follow local emergency instructions; do not stand beside the vehicle in a live lane. The safest action depends on the specific hazard, road design and directions from responders.

Warning triangles: useful equipment, not a universal recipe

Reflective roadside warning triangles are a relevant preparedness item because their purpose is to alert approaching traffic to a stopped vehicle. They are not a prerequisite for calling for help, and the sources cited here do not establish one consumer triangle model, certification, price or placement pattern for every passenger car.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Safety Planner describes warning-device timing and placement for covered commercial vehicles. Its example includes a warning within 10 minutes and devices at four paces (approximately 10 feet) and 40 paces (approximately 100 feet) in specified conditions. Those figures are commercial-vehicle instructions. Do not copy them into passenger-car advice unless an applicable state or local rule expressly covers your situation.

A historical NHTSA interpretation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 125 describes certain carried warning devices that do not have a self-contained energy source and are intended to warn approaching traffic of a stopped vehicle. The interpretation does not constitute current product certification, and NHTSA expressly does not approve, certify or endorse commercial products. If you carry triangles, learn the rules for the jurisdiction and vehicle you will actually drive in, and deploy them only when you can do so without entering a dangerous traffic stream.

What approaching drivers should do

A disabled car is also a warning to everyone approaching it. NHTSA’s current webpage says all 50 states have Move Over laws for emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The same page summarizes that 19 states and Washington, DC include other vehicles displaying flashing or hazard lights. The exact covered vehicles, penalties and required speed reduction differ by jurisdiction.

  1. Look well ahead. Scan for hazard flashers, turn signals, reflective devices and a vehicle on the shoulder.
  2. Move to a nonadjacent lane when safe. Check mirrors and blind spots, signal, and change lanes only when there is enough space and time.
  3. Slow down when a lane change is not safe. Reduce speed to a reasonable level for the visibility, traffic and road conditions while passing the stopped vehicle.
  4. Expect people and equipment. A tow operator or occupant may be near the car even when you cannot see them immediately. Leave additional room and avoid sudden steering.

Move Over requirements are legal rules as well as prudent driving. Check your state’s current law before relying on a particular distance, speed or vehicle definition.

Night, rain and poor visibility

Darkness and weather do not change the basic sequence: signal, get clear of traffic if possible, select a visible position and request help. They do make the visibility test stricter. A location that is apparent in daylight may be difficult to see through spray, glare or fog.

  • Keep the available warning lights operating, provided the electrical system can support them.
  • Prefer a straight, open section over a location hidden by a crest, curve, parked vehicle or roadside object.
  • Do not walk into a lane to place a device or inspect a problem when visibility is poor.
  • Tell the assistance operator that conditions are dark, wet, icy or foggy so the responding driver can approach cautiously.

These measures improve recognition; they do not turn a shoulder into a protected work area. Treat every passing vehicle as a potential hazard until it has gone by.

A small preparedness kit

Preparation cannot prevent every breakdown, but it can reduce the time needed to make the car visible and summon help. Keep equipment secured so it does not become a projectile in a crash.

  • Know the location and operation of the hazard-flasher switch before an emergency.
  • Store a charged phone and a charging method in the vehicle.
  • Keep roadside-assistance contact details available offline as well as in an app.
  • Consider portable reflective roadside warning triangles after checking the rules that apply where you drive. They are optional preparedness equipment, not a substitute for a safe stopping position.
  • Carry a flashlight for identifying controls or reading location markers, but do not use it as a reason to stand in traffic.
  • Keep vehicle registration, insurance information and medical details accessible to responders without requiring a search outside the car.

Common mistakes and safer corrections

Mistake Why it creates risk Better correction
Stopping just after a hill or around a curve Approaching drivers may see the car too late to react. Use a visible position when relocation can be made safely; otherwise activate available signals immediately.
Leaving the car in a travel lane with no warning The vehicle blends into normal traffic until a driver is close. Turn on hazards, or use turn signals if hazards are unavailable, and call for assistance.
Assuming hazard lights make a lane safe Flashing lights warn but do not stop or redirect traffic. Move fully off the road if possible and remain in the safest available position.
Copying commercial-truck triangle distances FMCSA’s cited measurements apply to covered commercial vehicles and specified conditions. Use passenger-car instructions from the applicable jurisdiction instead of assuming the same distances.
Standing beside the vehicle to wave traffic around You become exposed to moving vehicles and may be difficult to see. Follow the California guidance to stay inside while waiting, unless an immediate danger requires evacuation.
Attempting a repair in a live lane Tools, doors and people occupy space approaching drivers may need. Request professional assistance and avoid roadside work unless the location is clearly protected.
Giving an imprecise location A tow provider can lose time searching a long route or divided highway. Provide direction, route, landmark or mile marker and the vehicle description.

Situation-specific playbooks

The engine stops on a highway

Steer toward the shoulder while the vehicle still responds, activate the hazards and stop in the most visible safe position. If the car cannot clear the lane, keep warning lights on, call assistance immediately and provide the direction of travel and nearest marker. Do not attempt to push the car yourself in moving traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A flat tire on a wide shoulder

Move completely off the roadway if you can do so without losing control. Activate the hazards, call for a tire service or tow and remain inside under the cited California guidance. A wide shoulder does not eliminate the danger from passing vehicles, so avoid standing beside the tire to begin a repair.

The hazard flashers do not work

If the turn signals operate, California DMV guidance says to use them. If no exterior signal works, concentrate on reaching the safest visible position and contact assistance; do not enter traffic merely to place a warning device. Tell the operator that the car has no functioning lights.

The car stops just beyond a curve

If the vehicle can be moved safely, relocate to a position visible from farther away. If it cannot, leave the available signals on, call for help and give the operator the curve or hill as a critical landmark. Do not walk back around the bend to warn traffic.

A passenger wants to wait outside

Explain that California’s cited instruction is to stay in the vehicle until help arrives. Keep everyone inside unless the vehicle itself becomes the greater danger or emergency personnel direct an evacuation. If leaving is unavoidable, move away from traffic rather than standing at the car’s edge.

How to apply the guidance outside California

The most specific breakdown instructions cited here come from the California Driver Handbook. They are useful safety guidance, but they are not nationwide law. Rules can differ for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, divided highways, tunnels, bridges and roads with special stopping restrictions.

Before a long trip, check your state transportation or motor-vehicle agency for requirements covering hazard lamps, roadside warning devices, roadside stopping and Move Over duties. When two rules appear to conflict, follow the more immediate safety direction from police, fire or roadside personnel at the scene. Do not assume that a commercial-vehicle rule, a California instruction or a product label applies to every passenger car everywhere.

A compact decision sequence

  1. Can you safely keep moving? Reach a pull-off or shoulder without an abrupt maneuver.
  2. Can you get fully off the road? Do so, while avoiding a hidden hill or curve when another safe position is available.
  3. Can approaching drivers see the car? If not, improve the position only when relocation is safe.
  4. Which signal works? Use hazards; if unavailable, use turn signals under the cited California guidance.
  5. Who can help? Call roadside assistance, report the exact location and remain in the vehicle unless a greater danger or responder instruction requires otherwise.

The essential signal is a combination of visible positioning, working lights and a prompt request for professional help. Each part compensates for a different failure: position gives drivers sight distance, lights identify the stopped vehicle and the call brings trained assistance without requiring you to work beside traffic.
