Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt depends on what you mean by “restore.” If you used Windows 7 System Restore, Microsoft says personal documents are not lost in its documented sign-in recovery scenario, but you may need to reinstall programs and reset some personal settings. Windows Easy Transfer, a roaming profile, and a profile-folder copy work differently: each brings back a different mix of files and settings.
First identify which kind of restore you used
“Restore a profile” is not one Windows 7 operation. It may mean rolling system state back to a restore point, transferring selected data and settings with Windows Easy Transfer, signing in with a server-backed roaming profile, or restoring files from a backup. The outcomes below cover the first three; they do not establish what every backup product or manual profile-repair method will restore.

| Operation | What it brings back | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| System Restore | System state from a restore point | In Microsoft’s Windows 7 SP1 sign-in recovery scenario, personal documents remain, but programs may need reinstalling and some personal settings may need resetting. Microsoft Support |
| Windows Easy Transfer | Selected user files and program settings | It does not transfer installed program files, fonts, or drivers; install programs and applicable fonts or drivers separately. Microsoft Support |
| Roaming profile | A profile held on a server and copied to a replacement computer at first logon | Applies only when the account and network are configured for roaming profiles. Microsoft Learn |
If you used System Restore
Microsoft’s Windows 7 Service Pack 1 instructions describe using System Restore when a user cannot sign in and needs to return to a restore point at which sign-in worked. Microsoft says personal documents are not lost in this scenario, while programs may need to be reinstalled and some personal settings reset. Read Microsoft’s recovery guidance.

If you used Windows Easy Transfer
Easy Transfer lets you select one or more user profiles and transfer selected files and program settings to another computer. Microsoft documents network transfer, removable media, and a dedicated Easy Transfer cable as methods. For removable media, an external hard drive or USB flash drive can hold the transfer file. A regular USB cable is not the specified cable method. Microsoft’s Easy Transfer instructions.
- Installed programs: Easy Transfer does not move program files. Install the applications on the destination computer.
- Fonts and drivers: These system files are not transferred. Install custom fonts and updated drivers separately as needed.
- Transfer contents: Review Easy Transfer’s report to see what was selected and transferred; it is not a copy of the complete installed Windows environment.
Why files and settings can come back separately
A Windows user profile has two main parts: the NTuser.dat registry hive and a set of profile folders. At logon, Windows maps the hive to HKEY_CURRENT_USER; it stores registry-based preferences and configuration. The folders hold per-user data and configuration files, including locations such as Documents, Desktop, and Start menu. Microsoft Learn: About User Profiles.

Windows creates and maintains a local profile when a user first signs in. Microsoft Learn. Copying visible folders such as Documents or Desktop can therefore recover personal files without restoring every registry-based preference or application setting. Likewise, restored settings do not mean the applications themselves have been reinstalled.

When a roaming profile is involved
A roaming profile is stored on a server share. When configured, the server copy is downloaded to a network computer at sign-in and synchronized when the user signs out. On a replacement computer, Microsoft describes the server profile being copied there at the user’s first logon. Microsoft Learn.

What to check next
- Identify what you actually ran: System Restore, Windows Easy Transfer, a backup restore, or a sign-in to a roaming-profile account.
- If it was System Restore, check whether the affected applications still open and whether personal settings need to be reset.
- If it was Easy Transfer, review its transfer report, install any missing applications, and add fonts or drivers separately when required.
- If files or settings are missing after another kind of backup or manual profile repair, consult that product’s recovery documentation; the outcomes described here do not establish what that method restores.
